I used scribus to format my coloring book for KDP and it worked like a charm. I do find the navigation/interface a bit odd. (hate the zoom). But I was amazed at how quickly I could put it all together. It has all the major features you need in a layout software. If you are using images with your text and need pre-press layout tool this is great open source software! Using Inkscape, krita, and scribus I got all my art work (already done) formatted into a KDP compatible PDF in a few hours.

That is awesome! Agreed, the interface has been a little difficult for me to learn. I am glad that you were able to use it for your books. Its good to know that it can be used for images as well as text. I'll have to challenge myself to spend some more time in the system to figure that out.

Thank you for the upload. I have an idea for an ebook and wanted to do it using Scribus. Glad to hear that it is a viable choice and that I won't have to buy and software.

Glad it was helpful! I've used Scribus for formatting print books, I haven't tried it for eBooks yet. Best of luck with your book!

I suspect the reason for not wanting word generated Pdf is that they can be terrible for mass print. Font handling isn't that good. Depending on the way the printer does its rip, those documents can crash the printer. Also the art effects that word generates (even if you are not actively using them ) are always a problem and only show up how bad once printed.
