Remember the good old days where people could argue a call and the umps would just let it roll off their back. No one got ejected unless they touched the ump or if they really went ballistic and wouldn't stop. Now MLB umpires are made of glass and the tiniest remark or movement shatters their egos. I actually used to be a baseball fan but it's really unwatchable now. I've heard the argument for years that umpires didn't really need to be in baseball and that every job they do could be replaced by electronics. I used to be totally against that argument because I believed the human factor was important and most calls were right anyway. But with the combination of the sheer number of horrible calls on top of the fact that you can't even make a face in frustration anymore without getting tossed out of the game just makes this sport completely unwatchable for me now. Its sad.
@markharbaugh44453 ай бұрын
Remember when the good umpires were known by name just simply because they were umpires for a long time? Now umpires are known because they suck so bad. I cringe when I see who an umpiring crew is going to be for a given series. I just feel bad for the players and fans in attendance.

Referees of all sports should behave more like mediators than a judge. Make a call, calmly explain your reasons and move on. If someone is disagreeing with you, let them air their peace in a non-violent fashion. And if it goes too long, ignore them and or signal the coach/assistant coach to take them back to their designated area. There's no need for screaming matches, arguments, and or ejections. Ejections should only happen when the need arises. Not because of hurt feelings. Act like a professional and conduct yourself as such. Don't make it personal and act as if you supposed to have the first and last word on all interactions. This ain't about you. It's about putting together an enjoyable game for the fans.

Seriously? Have ANY of you ever umpired a ball game before? Have any of you ever officiated ANY sport before? Hell, the majority of you dont even know the rules. None of you have to "testicular fortitude" to get out there and do what they do. NONE OF YOU. And before you ask. YES, I've been umpiring for over 30yrs. Over half of that at a high level. Ive heard all kinds of crap come from people. How would you feel if i came to your job and say some of the things that you and other people say to you about your job performance? Umpires are human. They are going to miss a call here and there. No one is perfect. Yet that is what you expect out of all sports officials. If you think you can do better or know better than the ones out there, go buy the equipment, take the tests, get to training, and your butts out there and do the job.

There was a time I got called out on a third strike off the plate. I stood there for second, and proceeded to slowly walk back to the dugout. The umpire instantly said “don’t start jawing…” I stopped and looked at him, still not talking. So I drew a line in the dirt where the ball crossed and walked away. Still not talking. The ump went to my coach and told him what I did. My coach pulled me from the game. He said it was for appearance sake (last inning and we were winning). I looked at my coach and said “if that’s the umps initial reaction, he knows he fucked up.”

@markharbaugh88783 ай бұрын
@@leifopstad2972 I knew what I had done had “crossed the line”. And also keep in mind, this was almost 30 years ago. And I was never an argumentative player. @markharbaugh44453 ай бұрын
@nickyeayea7257 Again, I'm not questioning the move by my coach. My point is the umpire instigated it. And to me, that was him admitting he missed the call. But he could have pulled me aside later and explained. Instead, he made a point to say in front of everyone "don't jaw it..." If he had been respectful and talked to me, I would have simply chalked it up to human error. And to make it more frustrating, it was an umpire I genuinely respected. I was just baffled as to why he felt I would openly argue. So, yes my reaction was disrespectful. My initial thought was to simply walk back to the dugout, put my bat back, grab my glove and get back in the field. Unfortunate chain of events.
