Under the old rules, you didn't have to step off the rubber to throw to first. You did have to complete a pitch once you started it however. A lot of lefthanded pitchers got very good at disguising where they throwing the ball, to the point that the start of their pick off move and delivery looked identical. Right handers obviously can't do this on a throw to first. It's a moot point now however, because the rules now state that everyone has to step off before throwing to first.

From what I believe of the pitcher is going in a. Option towards home plate and steps of then it is not a balk if they try to pickoff

@@itsmiso2873 Yeah, that was a mistake on my part. I misread the release that they were trying it out in the minors, as a rule change they implemented. Still, the numbers speak for themselves. A 75% increase in stolen bases. That's absolutely BONKERS. There have always been more stolen bases in the minors, but if they put this into place with the mound distance change, MLB might actually make it worth the risk for guys to take off.

The one by Pineda at 1:51 is a blatant balk. If you watch it at 0.25 speed you will notice that the runners forward motion is correlated with the initial movement of Pineda's front foot. This is the correct motion to make obviously if he has the steal sign, but the umpire clearly wasn't watching his feet. Not to mention the shoulder turn that follows before the back foot even moves.

arent the plays at 1:51 and 1:58 balks? they both move their lead left foot first. been a long time since i played and not sure if the rules have been changed or not... I was taught that if you were set, you needed to move off the rubber before moving the left foot?
@ryanaltfillisch71557 жыл бұрын
Not sure who taught you that, but they were wrong as neither of those were balks. As long as the lead foot does not move towards home or make a move that looks like it's going towards home, a right handed pitcher can move his lead foot first on a pickoff towards first.

Doesn't matter if you are a lefty or a righty. The rule applies to both equally. There is no pitching rule that specifies what a righty or lefty can do.
@donaldcoryblackmon29317 жыл бұрын
Alan you're partially correct. MLB rules concentrate on the pivot foot, therefore there ARE different rules for lefties when throwing to first base. Obviously these rules apply to righties when throwing to third base. Just some FYI...
@alanhess93067 жыл бұрын
Cory, No, there are not different rules. The rule book makes no mention of right hand or left hand pitchers. Simply put, it is much more difficult for a right hand pitcher to step and throw to first so they use the spin move to throw to first. But the rules are the same for both.
@Terribleathletes Жыл бұрын
Maybe I'm not very brushed up on the rules but 1:44 looks like an obvious balk. As far as i know you can't step towards home and then throw to first, you have to step towards first if that's where you're going to throw. Am I wrong?
