Mariners fan: Ownership is the main problem. They only care about winning to the extent that it keeps fans in the ballpark for as long as possible. There are payroll restrictions in place, only for the sake of improving the bottom line. It’s self-imposed, not due to a lack of resources. There is no reason they can’t simply add free agents to the current roster, other than they don’t find it profitable to do so. Dipoto isn’t perfect either, he’s done very poorly with the few dollars he’s given each year. I guarantee they trade at least one of Gilbert/Kirby/Miller/Woo in the next two seasons because they will become “too expensive”. This ownership group is an absolute embarrassment to baseball.

As a Mariners fan I absolutely agree, it's abysmal that they are wasting all the talent they have on the team. I don't understand why they haven't tried to trade Castillo, dump both Mitchs contracts even if it means giving up Bliss, Locklear or Hancock. Get a good bat for Castillo, sign bregman or Alonso, and call up Ford even though he may not be ready give him an opportunity until June then go after a backup catcher at the deadline. Bring back Turner as well. So many moves they could make to improve, and yet they are sitting in the car while it's running at a green light

We can’t dump Mitch and Mitch’s contracts… even if we could, giving up talent to get off that money just puts us in a worse place because then we overpay a different bum to fill his shoes (give up Kelenic to save $ and we sign Mitch Garver or give up Robbie Ray so we can play him for not as long as Haniger is getting paid) Mariners doing inception levels of salary dumping if they dump Haniger

@@HarryTeasley _"Marlins have 2 WS wins"_ from over 20 years ago, none of which has to do with their current ownership. You might as well write to Hiroshi Yamauchi to increase Mariners' payroll today. _"Pirates, I don't think they've developed to a position like this"_ Then you weren't watching them in the 2010's, it was strikingly similar to the Mariners now (just with more wildcard appearances on an even tighter budget). Nutting rode similar lowball "promises" as Stanton to keep the fanbase duped until the window was just about shut. The difference is that, unlike the Mariners, the Pirates routinely work with a bottom-6 payroll. In 18 years of ownership, Nutting's Pirates have fielded just one $100M team ($100.6M in 2017). Under Stanton, the Mariners have had a bottom-6 payroll one time (2021) and otherwise were never even close to that cheap, with $100M+ teams being the norm. Stanton doesn't even try to compete with the big boys, but Nutting makes him look like a Steinbrenner by comparison. They have the same reported net worth, by the way.

As much as I want to believe it, I don't think I see as many teams willing to take on his contract. With the no-trade they are definitely going to have to sweeten the pot, and Boston reportedly already balked at giving anything without us taking back salary. There is no guarantee of money being re-deployed, and the Mariners have already shown that they don't always re-deploy resources, and the market all around is thinning. If you are talking flat salary dump and getting nothing but a lottery ticket back, maybe, but you can't sell the clubhouse or fanbase on that. Burnes signing with someone not on the board by most helps, but you can't trade him without getting a legitimate piece back because there are no guarantees someone signs with those resources.

Castillo is the only veteran in the SP group, you need experience to win in post season 3. Trading Castillo gets you money to overpay for another aging star 4. Woo or Miller can get you a top bat with control and less money 5. Trade Castillo next year will get you more return with only two years left if you like 6. You might be able to attach some salary by trading Woo or Miller 7. You need leader in the club house

Mariners should look into trading Haniger and Garver to the Yankees for LeMahieu and Stroman. Then Castillo can be traded to the Dodgers for Muncy and M. Rojas. 1B, 2B, 3B, and Castillo's spot in the rotation are then filled, and the M's even save a little money in '25, but they may still need to find a back-up catcher.
@T_K78 күн бұрын
Needing a backup catcher is far preferable to needing an entire infield. Unfortunately, Jerry & Johnny won't do this because there's money spent on LeMahieu (and likely Stroman) in '26 whereas the two Mitches will be off of the books. That thinking is the whole reason we have Haniger in the first place (so that we wouldn't have to pay Robbie Ray in '26).

If they could convince Alonso on a short term deal. Two years with an opt out. He could pump up his numbers in a hitter friendly park. Skip the Vladdy free agent year. And be the best 1st baseman on the market at 32-33. As a Diamondback fan I want to see if Luvollo is responsible for the infield defensive metrics or Perezchica. If Alonso goes to the Diamondbacks. Improve defensively and hits for power. Then it’s luvollos system. Alonso to the Diamondbacks makes sense. Offensively they would be on paper the same offense as 2024.
