retiring numbers is silly. on a long enough timeline, all 1&2 digit numbers will be retired. 3 digit numbers look strange on jerseys it's a fun competition for players to vie some legend's number, and whether they're worthy of it this season it keeps the player's memory alive more than some mural almost no one looks at during a game
