Pretty much all of them are for the purposes of etiquette and sportsmanship. In theory I think they're decent rules to have, but in practice many of them are kinda dumb. This is coming from a 39 year old with some "old head" tendencies, by the way.

Pretty dumb. Some traditionalists say it’s to “preserve the integrity of the sport”, which is ironic since they get sensitive and are triggered the second a young player doesn’t play the game the way they did in the 1800s 🤣🤣 You have to remember that sports are suppose to be entertaining and fun, us fans get very emotional so why can’t the players do it as well? The “integrity of the sport” is complete BS and doesn’t mean shit if the sport’s characters are boring and bland.

Forget showing off, it is purposely throwing at the ribs or head to injure a player that should have at least a 10 game suspension. Such throws are career enders and you don't want to end a professional's career because "he stared at the homerun for too long". A broken rib, elbow, or head fracture can end your short career. A smug celebration will not.

Yeah so don't do it. If you don't want your career to be ended with a speech impediment souvenir don't be a jackass. Because there are consequences. After scoring a touchdown Walter Payton was notoriously known for simply handing the ball to the referee. He's also known for being one of the greatest of all-time, one of the hardest working players, a complete gentleman, a classy human being. What's keyshawn Johnson known for? Having exceptional athletic abilities, and also for flushing them down the drain because he was one of the biggest jackasses of all-time. Who do you want your kids to be wide eyed about when they are the most impressionable? Walter or keyshawn? There's lots of data to look at to see what are the results generationally. Those that grew up not witnessing the bat flip own their own homes, have 401ks, vacation homes, a fat retirement, give the maximum allowable tax free gift each year for Christmas to their kids and grandkids. everything they have is paid for and they carry zero debt. Now let's look at the generation the grew up watching jackasses and Terrel Owen's sharpie: no hope of the American dream, they witnessed the loss of the middle class, they burnt down our country during a locked down pandemic for a non-existant reason. They also believe that Joe Biden actually won that election.

If I was the commissioner of the league and I see a pitcher intentionally hit a batter for a stupid reason like this, you can bet that they’re gonna receive major punishment. Something like a 10 game ban at the very LEAST. Maybe like a month-long ban or even more. In baseball, during an at-bat the pitcher is in complete power. He can throw wherever and however he wants to throw whereas the batter is mercy to the pitcher’s decision. If the batter broke an unwritten rule or something in his last at-bat and, as he walks to home plate for his next at-bat, he sees the pitcher giving him a dirty look, there’s NOTHING he can do except take a 95-100 mph fastball to the spine. To me, that’s unacceptable. The batter can’t do anything to avoid the throw and can’t even defend himself in any way as the pitcher attempts to potentially give the batter a major injury. The pitcher is significantly abusing his power in this case and, at the same time, endangering another human being that doesn’t have the ability to avoid the attack or defend himself which means that the pitcher deserves a major punishment. Similarly, if I’m a pitcher, I would NEVER do this. Intentionally hitting a batter is an extremely dirty, petty, and an honestly pussy thing to do. Especially considering that the pitcher has multiple innings to think it over before he chooses to take the action of hitting a batter (as opposed to it being a “heat of the moment” type of thing). I know baseball’s culture encourages this type of thing but I cannot respect a pitcher that currently does something like this. Edit: Adding on to this, if a pitcher intentionally tries to hit the TEAMMATE of the player who broke the unwritten rule, that’s even worse. If they do this, they get an extra month on their suspension for this (if I was commissioner).

To paraphrase Whitey Herzog: when you stop trying to win the game, I’ll stop hitting HRs. Best way not to get taken deep on a 3-0 pitch? Don’t fall behind 3-0 in the count. I remember back in 2005 and was at the Cards-Red Sox game and the Cards were up 7-2. Grudz gets hit by a pitch. Then the Red Sox pitcher throws to first 4 times before throwing to the next batter, throws just that one pitch to the plate and throws a 5th time to first. On the very next pitch, Grudz steals 2nd. A Red Sox fan complained that you don’t do that when up by 5. I countered by saying that you don’t throw to first 5 times, daring a someone to steal and then complain about being stolen on. Also, I pointed out how the Reds has just overcame a 6 run deficit just an hour before to win the game, showing even a 5 run lead is not safe, and even more so with a team loaded line the Red Sox that had David Ortiz who could change the game with one swing.

@edwardshaw1743
@edwardshaw1743 3 жыл бұрын
@@rickkeeney4657 The team getting no-hit could have tried bunting to get momentum on their side earlier and no one would have cared but didn't and the game was still close then. As a team, they have seen enough of the pitcher to get a gauge of what kind of pitches he throws and try and get a hit or baserunner but couldn't. The only other time a team would consider bunting late in-game is to either advance a runner. But with no runners on late in a no-hitter you are only bunting so that your team doesn't get no hit. Some people don’t appreciate taunting and doing all the unnecessary bat flips and stare downs just bc you hit the ball. Any sport ppl who celebrate get a target on their back and you can’t just be like “beat me” then get mad when they come after you. There’s such a thing as a sore winner

Pitchers are worried about the reaction to the bomb they just gaveup than fixing their pitches and trying not to serve up another cookie. So let me get this straight, you have to give up a strike on 3-0 because it could be a walk and because youre team is up. but then you can swing on 3-1 or 3-2, which has the same situation as 3-0, am i missing something?

Here's how you solve this problem: If a pitcher intentionally throws at a batter, that batter is allowed to fight the pitcher and no one else is allowed to interfere with the fight. That'll make pitchers stop this shit in a heartbeat.

That's absolutely ridiculous, these people are paid an insane amount of money, and most of these unwritten rules aren't made for player safety, but ego protection? I know in hockey, unwritten rules about fighting actually exist to protect players from dirty plays, which are far more devastating than a few slugs to the face. Secondly, who the fuck cares about how bad the opposing team is doing. In hockey, if you're up a 7-0 shutout, you don't slow down, you go for an 8-0 shutout and then a 9-0. Players rarely get a chance like that to so drastically improve their statistics in a single game. If it fucking demoralizes them, good, it's on them and especially their coach to kick their asses into gear, not the opposition. Professional players should understand that crushing defeat is always a possibility, and should never expect mercy from the other side.

Nothing wrong with a little celebration when a hr is hit but it needs to be kept in check. Look at the NFL, every damn stop on 3rd down gets a cringe worthy group pic from everyone on defense. Every touchdown has a choreographed dance in the end zone. It's too much. The rule Tatis Jr. "broke" is a joke but some old school rules are still needed I believe.

I must ask the question, if you are Tatis, how do you basically tell the media and whoever probably asked him to do that "If it's how the game is meant to be played, sure, make it a rule, and write in the MLB rulebook and I'll stop. But, right now, the MLB has yet to make it official and as far as I'm concerned, unwritten rules are not written for a reason, so I'll swing at 3-0, even if my team is ahead in the future." And do it properly and politely?

When I played, (80's, early 90's) I was taught to not swing on 3-0 pitch especially if you know the pitcher is struggling with his control. It's one thing if the pitcher has been putting up goose eggs inning after inning however when you're in the box and it's the late innings and your team is up by more than 4 runs, and the pitcher is struggling to find his control and you can see him losing his confidence, there's nothing quite so disheartening as seeing a fellow player (whether he's on your team or not) struggle to find the strike zone. His battery mate is having a difficult time keeping his breaking balls from skipping past him and when he throws his fastball he's throwing wide and again his catcher is doing everything he can to keep the ball from getting past him. That's when you step out of the box, look at the pitcher, see him sweating on a hot August Texas evening, breathing heavy and you know he's spent. He's just trying to get through the inning...and as you look out at him you two make eye contact...and without saying a word, you nod at him and he adjusts his cap signaling you. You step back into the box and go through your routine. Looking out at the pitcher he shakes off a sign, shakes another off, finally nodding to the pitch he wants. He winds up and throws the meatiest 82 mph fastball with no movement right down the plate for a called strike. 3-1 count now. You take one step out of the box and look back at the pitcher and he again adjusts his cap in a silent acknowledgment of the strike you just gave him. Not because you feel sorry for him, not because you think you're better than he is, and not because you don't think he can throw a strike. You do it because the competitor in you doesn't want to take advantage of a man that's not at his best. I'd rather take a BB on a guy with control issues than jack one out of the park because he served up an 80 mph fastball because he was simply trying to regain his rhythm of hitting the zone with his pitches. But....that one strike is all he gets. If he throws another meatball...I'm going to tattoo that high school fastball right over the left-centerfield wall. That's the way I see it and the way I was taught to play the game.

@@stevenmcalister826 Yea, I see what you mean but honestly, it's not about feeling sorry for him. Not at all. It's about doing the honorable thing. Combat evolved into the sports we know today. From the gladiators of Rome, boxing contests date back to ancient Sumer in the 3rd millennium and ancient Egypt in 1350 BCE. The ancient Olympic Games included several combat-related sports from armored foot races, boxing, wrestling, and so on. For me and the way I was brought up playing the game, it's about respect, honor, and camaraderie.

I have never heard of this "don't swing on 3-0 thing" I understand not bunting or doing stuff to deliberately run up the score or extend a game that's gotten out of hand but telling players that they have to stop even pretending to play is stupid. if he had swung and missed or grounded out this wouldn't have been a conversation. they're upset because he hit it out of the park. it's stupid.

I agree with you points. however - if you are going to get rid of the unwritten rules...get rid of all of them. If the batters can stare at their HRs in the box for a few minutes, then you also need to throw out the stupid warnings given to both benches when a single pitch gets away from a pitcher and even remotely looks like it’s going to hit a batter. If you show the pitcher up, the he should be able to brush back whoever he wants, knowing that the other side will be able to retaliate if necessary. Get rid of all the unwritten rules - not just the ones that look cool on the Ps5 game.

Simple if a pitcher hits a batter due to the so called unwittin rules, though the Manager Catcher Pitcher Automatically out of game. If the pitcher does this 5 times in a season he is out for the season and all of next season. Baseballs thrown at 90+ can kill or seriously hurt people. That will fix alot of problems. Also, if the other team is up instead of getting ticked of the other team still playing, why not just forfeit the game, so there no bs rules to be broken there...
