In 1968, the Houston Astros had the third overall pick and took a catcher from Buffalo NY named Martin Cott. Cott never reached the majors. The New York Yankees had the fourth pick and they, too, took a catcher. This one was from Canton, OH and his name was Thurman Munson. The Astros had the first overall pick in 1992 and one of their top scouts *pleaded* with the top brass to select a kid named Derek Jeter. Houston took 3B/OF Phil Nevin instead, thinking the college prospect would be easier to sign and couldn't use college as leverage. The scout that wanted Jeter resigned. If an infield of Altuve, Bregman, Correa and Kris Bryant seems formidable, how about an infield of Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Ken Caminiti and Derek Jeter?

Arizona State standout Reggie Jackson was considered the best amateur ballplayer in the country heading into the 1966 Major League Baseball draft. The team picking first that year was the lowly, awful New York Mets. According to Jackson’s new tell-all, “Becoming Mr. October” (Doubleday), in which he details feuds and resentments toward his old Yankee teammates, the New York media and especially his old manager Billy Martin, the only reason he did not become a Met was because his girlfriend, Juanita Campos, was Hispanic. Jackson recalls how his coach at Arizona State, Bobby Winkles, broke the bad news. “A day or two before the draft, Bobby Winkles sat me down and told me, ‘You’re probably not gonna be the No. 1 pick. You’re dating a Mexican girl, and the Mets think you will be a problem,’ ” Jackson writes. “ ‘They think you’ll be a social problem because you are dating out of your race.’ ” Jackson was especially baffled because he’s part Hispanic - his grandmother is from Puerto Rico and his middle name is Martinez. But that didn’t matter, even to the perennial cellar-dwelling Mets. “No, you’re colored, and they don’t want that,” Winkles said.

The Angels were going to draft Mike Trout with the 24th overall pick, which was their own, but since the pick they got from Teixeira was consecutive to theirs, they drafted their second choice, Randall Grichuk, before Trout in order to knock Trout’s slot value down and make him an easier sign. I’d make the case that the Tigers not getting Cutch was good bc he would’ve just filled Maybin’s role in the Miggy deal and then it wouldn’t be such a good deal for Detroit since Cutch would’ve planned out
@aarondersnah8632 жыл бұрын
I would offer the 1971 draft as a bigger disappointment for Tigers fans. With the 11th pick that year, Detroit took light hitting shortstop Tom Veryzer. Four picks later, Boston got Jim Rice.

I knew the Phillies' one had to be Frank Thomas. By the way, they didn't have a shot at local boy Trout because they gave up their first round pick to Seattle for signing Raul Ibanez, and that pick would have been two spots after Trout went anyway.

The worse for the Tigers was drafting Matt Anderson #1 overall..

Over 20 teams whiffed on Trout. That takes about half the teams of the board right away

Still think the yankees would picked the signing of Teixeira and win the world series than drafting anyone with the 25th pick in the 09 draft

Oh man not even sure if the 2006 draft was the Pirates worst. You can certainly make a case for the 2002 draft when they were to pick first overall and decided to take Bryan Bullington whom I remember even at the time people said was at best a number 3 pitcher. He had an overall win-loss record of 1-9 with a 5.62 ERA for his career. They passed on Zack Greinke among others to take Bryan.

I'm a Texas Rangers fan and that draft mistake of there's is INSANE.
@reedermh4 жыл бұрын
That's most Rangers drafts. They're one of the worst franchises in all of pro sports. 1996-99, 2010-11, and 2016-17 are aberrations from their normal trends (outside of those years the only other times they were really in contention were 1974, 1993, and 2004).

If Kershaw had played for the Pirates he wouldn't have been Kershaw, the Pirates were notoriously awful at developing pitchers back then and still aren't great.

@@TheShinyFeraligatr Pirates were good at fixing old guys like Burnett and Liriano, but were ass at young pitchers with electric stuff.

The Yankees resigned Mark Teixeira but had to give away their draft pick which the Angels used to get Mike Trout. (Just saying, could’ve put Trout in the yanks jersey like all the others in the thumbnail)
@Posirep4 жыл бұрын
Remember the Angels had the 24th and 25th picks. They took Grichuck 24th cuz he would be cheaper to sign than Trout even tho the angels saw Trout as the better player. Who originally had that 24th pick? The Mets. They lost that to the Angels by signing K-Rod

I don’t really think they’re ever draft mistakes in baseball because if trout got picked up to a different team has different experiences and coaches you arnt going to be the same player

baseball is a lot harder to pick than the other sports. the jump to mlb is the hardest, way too many variables to consider, especially pitchers, it's a huge adjustment. doc ellis once said, "it's easy (not really) to get the majors, it's hell to stay there."
