I know it wasn't one of your favorites, but when Oriole Park in Baltimore was built in the '90s, it inspired the wave of "returning" sports stadiums to city centers as opposed to the suburbs - a classic design with modern features that fits in with its surroundings.

i've only been to 2 mlb stadiums, Fenway Park and Oriole Park. Let me just say that Oriole Park was extremely underwhelming, i did the tour and everything and in my opinion the only interesting or even high quality part of the park was the walkway in right field in front of the warehouse. i love that it brought back that style of stadium but it isn't a good stadium, this opinion might change once i visit more fields

@@cartergambone2730 Yeah, Oriole Park is kind of a plain stadium, especially compared to a lot of more recent stadiums that seem to have some flashy element, architectural design or gimmick. Oriole Park's "gimmick" was essentially the warehouse and how it was incorporated into the design. Nonetheless, it was actually honored by the American Institute of Architects when it was built.

Gimmicks fade and become tacky. Oriole Park will Become another Wrigley or Fenway. Honestly, both of those ballparks don’t have much going for them, but they’re great backdrops for a ballgame.

The main thing that this video missed but which is so important about baseball stadiums is the dimensions and shapes of the outfield wall. Unlike most other sports, there is no standard for outfield wall design. So some parks have deep walls, others much shorter. Some are deep in left, shallower in right or vice versa, which means some parks favor left-handed hitters, others favor righties, and others favor pitchers. Further, many have odd heights to the walls. The Green Monster in Fenway is very shallow but very tall. Others are short enough for an outfielder to reach up to the top without jumping. And then there are the angles and turns in outfield walls. Knowing how a ball will ricochet off a partial spot on the wall can be a huge advantage to the home team. Finally, there is no standard for the size of foul territory. Some have very little foul territory, so most foul balls hit in the air go into the stands. But others have huge foul territories where fielders have ample opportunities to catch foul balls, thus giving an advantage ti the defense. Oh, and as to Oakland’s stadium… I saw a game there in 1979 and it was a dump even then.
@loverbay4235

This is very true, which is why sometimes hitters stats can vary wildly depending on which ball park they are hitting in. With advanced stats now, they can literally judge whether or not any home run would have been a HR in any given stadium based on launch angle, exit velocity, and wind direction & speed, etc...

Just a few reasons why many consider the Oakland Coliseum the worst stadium in MLB: - As mentioned in the video, aesthetically Mt. Davis is a useless monstrosity of grandstands in the outfield. It was built as football stands and now are just seats covered in tarps. - Due to the fact that the stadium is below sea level, the drainage systems back up raw sewage into the dugouts and restrooms as well I believe. - Recently, they have found opossums living in the press box. - There's probably other animals such as rats and feral cats living throughout the rest of the stadium. - Since it was built in the 1960's, there have basically been no improvements/renovations made to the stadium other than Mt. Davis. Consequently, it is literally falling apart. While walking through some parts of the concourses, you feel like you're in a prison. - Also mentioned in the video, the amount of space between the stands and foul lines makes for a poor viewing experience for fans. That's just a few that I could list off of the top of my head.

The thing with Baseball stadiums is that, from around the 60's through the 80's, they largely went away from classic designs and were being built as drab multipurpose stadiums, not for baseball specifically, which led to a lot of samey, perfectly symmetrical fields. The Orioles stadium was the first in a long time to be built for baseball specifically and incorporated a lot of design elements which called back to the old days before multipurpose stadiums, which sparked a bunch of other teams to build new stadiums, which is why it's held in such high regard.

@Adrian B the reason OPACY looks like all the others is because all the others were built in its image. In order to appreciate Camden Yards, you have to understand what baseball stadiums used to look like. Image search for beauties like Veterans Field in Philadelphia, Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, the Kingdome in Seattle... it was dire. When Camden Yards came out, it was such a breath of fresh air, and before you knew it, every team was getting a new park, and OPACY was the template for each one. If you commissioned 30 artists to paint their own version of the Mona Lisa, chances are you'll get more than a few that you think look better than the original. Maybe the color palette is more to your taste. Maybe the portrait is from a more interesting angle. Maybe they just made the lady look prettier. And if you put the original Mona Lisa in a lineup with the others, and showed them all to people who had no idea what the Mona Lisa or why it was important, probably few of them would pick the boring old original as their favorite. But that doesn't mean that it isn't the original that's the masterpiece.

Not from the US but I know about Camden Yards and you are spot on in your summary . The municipal stadium was not just an American thing either Germany built soccer stadiums with Athletic tracks around them distancing the fans from the action . A lot of that was driven by stadiums being built by the local government rather than the clubs themselves who paid the lease Camden was hugely influential and all credit to the folks who made it happen

Just as an FYI, Rachel Carson (one of the bridges is named after her in Pittsburgh that you can see from PNC Park at 29:41) was essentially the pioneer of the environmental movement. Her book, Silent Spring delved into the destructive impact of pesticides and led to the US ban of DDT in 1971. That is why there is a bridge in Pittsburgh named after her.

After about a week or so in a new country, it’s pretty clear based on what kids are playing in the streets to get an idea what the top sport is in that country. Yes, there is meaning behind the “Red Stockings”…their stockings (socks) are red. Seriously though, the original Cincinnati Red Stockings (1866-70) was the first all professional baseball team. Way back then, teams often named themself after things as silly as their socks (eg, the White Sox, Red Sox, the Athletics being named so because they were members of an athletic club). After the original Cin Red Stockings disbanded, a few went to the new team in Boston and that team used the Red Stockings for the 1871-75 seasons. Starting in 1876, the Boston Red Stockings went through a few names before settling on the “Braves” in 1912. These Braves (formerly Red Stockings) moved to Milwaukee in 1953 and then Atlanta in 1966, where they’ve been the Atlanta Braves for nearly 60 years. The Braves (fka Red Stockings) is tied for the oldest MLB team with the Chicago Cubs, but unlike the Cubs, the Braves have played every season since 1871. The Cubs didn’t play in 1872-73 seasons while Chicago recovered from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The current Cincinnati Reds were formed in 1881 as the Red Stockings, naming themself after the original team (given that the Boston team stopped using the name a few years earlier). For the 1890 season, the Red Stockings dropped “Stocking” from their name because it sounded too “old”. And, other than a brief period in the 50s when they were the “Red Leggings”, they’ve been the Cincinnati Reds since 1890. In 1908, the Boston Americans (the relatively new American League team in Boston) changed their name to the Red Sox in honor of the original name of their cross-town National League rivals, the Boston Braves (formerly the Red Stockings)…and this is why there are two MLB teams named after Red socks, the Reds and the Red Sox. Despite having no ownership connections between the current Cin Red Stockings and the original Red Stockings, the current team has adopted the original as part of hits history and claims to be the oldest professional sports team (and baseball team), despite that not actually being true.

@@BritishGuy22 Yes, even though the present team isn't the same as the first professional team from 1869. Professional baseball started here in Cincinnati where the team paid players from other cities to play on the 1869 team and that team won all their games that season. Cincinnati also played the first night game at Crosley Field in May 24, 1935. Cincinnati in 1869 was the 6th largest city in the US and the main transportation was steamboats and tall stacks hence why the stadium has tributes of that in its design not just because we are next to the Ohio River. Opening Day here in Cincinnati is huge affair with a parade and the city basically shutting down. Downtown streets are closed, and it's packed with people. This year it is March 30, and we usually have the tradition of playing home for the start of our season due to the 1869 team.

Re. the Diamondbacks' stadium: You need to understand just how important that roof is. The average high temperature in Phoenix, Arizona across June, July, and August -- all of which is in the baseball season -- is 105 F (40.5 C). In July and August, the average *low* temperature is 81-82 F (27.5 C). And those are averages, not records. In 2003, on July 15, the *low* temperature was 96 F (36 C). So yeah, that roof saves lives. Note on Fenway: that wall in left field is 28 feet hall. Also, there's one seat that's famously painted red because Ted Williams hit a very long home run that landed in that seat. The seat is in the 27th row, and it's 502 feet from home plate where the ball hit a fan's straw hat -- and left a hole in the hat. The home run probably would have gone at least 530 feet if not obstructed, one physicist estimates 535 as there was a significant wind that day. Only a few players have hit a ball over 500 feet that we have video of, so that's pretty significant, especially since this was Williams' first season back from 3 and a half years spent as a Marine fighting World War 2. Cincinnati's team is nowadays known as the Reds, but Red Stockings was the original name. They were known as the Redlegs for a while during the height of the Communist scare, though. At 18:50 that's not a Holland flag in Kansas City's stadium, that's a Missouri flag -- Kansas City is in the U.S. State of Missouri. It looks like a Dutch flag but it has the state seal in the middle. My complaint with the Astros' stadium isn't anything mentioned in the video, but the fact there's a hill in center field, along with a flagpole that's in play. And I've seen outfielders fall down going up that hill. It's only a matter of time before someone's seriously hurt. You might want to check out images of the San Francisco Giants' original ballpark, Candlestick Park. It was infamous for looking rickety, worn down, and like it might fall apart at any moment... but when the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake hit, collapsing multiple bridges and freeways in the region, the ballpark stood so well that nobody at the park died. Which is remarkable, considering that the park was full for Game 3 of the World Series, which would have started in 5 more minutes had the quake not hit, but was subsequently postponed for ten days. Burritos are, in fact, Mexican, and San Diego is right on the border with Mexico. I like how I can see the exact moment at which the "limestone is like sandstone but tastes better" joke finally is processed by your mind. The Toronto Argonauts are a Canadian Football League team. The CFL has slightly different rules than the NFL, like only 3 downs instead of 4 and the field is 110 yards not 100. They tried branching into the US once -- fun fact, Baltimore is the only city to have won the CFL Grey Cup, an NFL Super Bowl, a pre-super-bowl NFL Championship, and a USFL Championship, though with four different teams. Fun fact about the Minnesota Twins' stadium: their first year in that stadium, they didn't have any games postponed due to weather. But they *did* have one postponed in their last stadium at the Metrodome, which as the name implies, had a roof. The roof was inflatable, however, and one day the snow was so much that the heating system couldn't melt it all and the weight of the snow *collapsed the roof*. Those catwalks at the Tampa Bay stadium can be hit by baseballs sometimes. The inner ring, if hit by a ball in fair territory, the ball is in play, which usually then falls for a hit because the bounce is hard to predict. The outer ring, if hit by a ball in fair territory, it's an automatic home run. Fun wrigley facts: The field used to bulge upwards in the middle, to where you couldn't see the third base dugout from first base. They finally fixed this about ten years ago. That ivy is not much padding, so you better slow down when you feel the warning track before you hit the bricks. A ball hit into the ivy sometimes disappears and that counts as a double. The basket at the top of the outfield fence is there to make it less of an issue when fans reach over the fence to try to catch a home run, because any ball they can actually reach would probably go in the basket for a home run anyway.

Quick Wrigley facts: Wrigley Field was built in 1914 for the Chicago Whales of the long-defunct Federal League. It was originally named Weeghman Field, in honor of the Whales' owner, Charles Weeghman. The Cubs moved in for the 1916 season. William Wrigley bought the Cubs in 1921. Wrigley was the founder of Wrigley chewing gum. Weeghman Park became Cubs Park in 1920 which became Wrigley Field in 1927. Bill Veeck (a baseball genius) planted the famous ivy in 1937. He also planted Chinese Elm trees that year, but due to Chicago's harsh winters, the trees did not survive and were removed. The hand-operated scoreboard is in such close proximity to the L (elevated train), that when the L goes by (Red Line's Addison Street station is one block from Wrigley), the scoreboard shakes. Above the scoreboard are three flagpoles, one for each National League division. The bigger center pole that holds everything together, is part of the mast of William Wrigley's yacht. Nobody has ever hit the scoreboard with a batted ball, although golfer Sam Snead did hit it with a golf ball in 1951. Baskets were added to the outfield walls for the 1970 season to cut down on debris being thrown onto the field.

Baseball stadium names are named based on the corporations that pay the most to sponsor the venue. And these names can change frequently. Progressive Field used to be called Jacobs Field, Chase Field used to be called Bank One Ballpark (BOB for short), T-Mobile Park used to be called Safeco Field, Guaranteed Rate Field used to be called US Cellular Field and before that Comiskey (or New Comiskey so as not to be confused with their old stadium) Park. As for the Coliseum, it is old and falling apart. The stadium has old sewage pipes that have caused backups into areas of the stadium including the locker rooms, training rooms and even some kitchens. It is a dilapidated building that needs to be torn down. However, the city of Oakland refuses to fund a new stadium, which is the reason the Raiders (NFL) left Oakland for Las Vegas.

one note about the "pool suite" at the Diamondbacks stadium - it's actually quite affordable. They require you to have 35 people and it costs $4,750, which comes out to about $135 per person and I'm pretty sure they include drinks and food. I've definitely had regular seats at other stadiums that cost more than $135 per ticket! I'd love to visit the pool suite some day

You can only tell so much about a park from pics - the game experience is also important. In that regard, Nationals Park, though not very inspiring physically, is a great place to watch a game. My other favorites are Fenway, Target Field and PNC. I actually really liked the Rangers' old ballpark - the one built just 30 years ago, so "old" is relative.

The Oakland Colosseum has not been well maintained and is kinda falling apart. They also have a major rodent infestation with over 100 cats and possums living on the premises. I am originally from San Diego and I live in Seattle so I’ve spent a lot of time in Petco and T mobile. The Park at the Park as a kid was nice in part because along the wall there is a Sand box that we would play in as kids where you have pitchers doing their warm ups. I haven’t been there in years so idk if it’s still there. Since it is sponsored by Petco you could adopt pets there when I was younger. We ended up getting a cat at one game

I think the fake rocks look less "spectacular" as they age. I don't know if they have decided to replace or revamp the stadium, but one way to massively improve it would be to get rid of the rockpile, paint the Big A white again, and put it in left field where it used to be before they started to mess with what used to be one of baseball's nicest stadiums.

I always had fun going to the Oakland Colosseum. It really isn't in good enough shape to host any games now, and the foul territory makes it so you have to sit that much further from the action, but there's something about the atmosphere there I've always loved. Reminds me of the atmosphere at the old RFK stadium, tbh.

Baseball is a long game. As you said, lots of starts and stops. Therefore, a pretty view and things to do within helps the park attenence. I found it funny (not just you but with other European reactors) you liked the "Modern" looking ballfields and disliked the retro fields. Strangely, we Americans like history and the connection to our past. Ballparks resembling the "Jewel Box" fields like Fenway and Wrigley are praised and loved more. Both Fenway and Wrigley are national landmarks and therefore will not have their names changed. THe Browns are named for their first head coach and are not racist.

My opinion on the few parks I’ve been to: Dodger Stadium: kind of old and concessions are way too expensive. Probably a bit overrated but I must admit, a 4th of July game at Dodger Stadium was probably the coolest and most quintessential American sporting experience of my life. Chase Field: decent field and ticket/concession prices are always very reasonable. The stadium food itself I’ve always found to be really good. This is my go-to stadium to get my baseball fix for a cheap price. Coors field: extremely beautiful stadium in an extremely beautiful area of the country. I was quite young so I don’t remember much else other than having loved my time there. Angel Stadium: personally my least favorite of the stadiums I’ve been too. I don’t remember anything bad about it but it was just a very forgettable experience for me. I’ll also give a shout-out to Southwest University Park, a AAA minor league baseball park in El Paso, where I’m from. It’s relatively new and as far as minor league baseball goes, it’s really quite nice. Also, as an A’s fan myself, yes the Oakland coliseum is perhaps the worst in baseball. Tropicana is the only other one in contention.

7:40 the reason the Phillies decided to do this was to pay homage to older stadiums they played in. For example, Shibe Park (also known as Connie Mack Stadium after a certain point) had this same “angular” shape about it behind home plate. In those days, stadiums were a neighborhood staple. They weren’t just built any old place surrounded by parking lots and transit ways. If you look at ballparks from the dawn of MLB throughout the late 60’s, you’ll notice majority were embedded into the surrounding neighborhoods. Shibe park was surrounded by row-homes (flats) on all four sides. Some of the original plans for citizens bank park included building it on one of the rivers that goes through Philly, with a scenic backdrop similar to St Louis or Pittsburgh. This was scrapped about 2 years before ground-breaking for the new park.

I'm a Rays fan. Tropicana Field has gotten better but it's still a dump imo. We should be getting a new stadium in the next few seasons. If not the team is probably moving somewhere else. I'm hoping for a new stadium on the Tampa side of Tampa Bay but it's looking more and more likely they'll just demolish the Trop and build a new stadium in its place. Before the K, the Royals played in a different stadium that was shared with the Chiefs for a time- Manciple Stadium. The Royals will build a new park in downtown KC before 2030- when the lease of the current location ends. One thing about the Kauffman Stadium- or The K are the fountains. Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains. They were added at the suggestion of Mr Kauffman’s wife- she was the baseball lover of the two. The screen is also ultra HD and is called Crown Vision and the crown because well Royals. They shape is also ment to mimic the Royals logo shield. . In 2015, after we won the World Series I went ton a tour of the stadium and really the only place I did not see are the broadcast booths. The k uses a bluegrass/ryegrass mix. The current outfield dimensions- it is one of the largest outfields in the MLB, especially to straight away center. Left- 330 Left to center-387 Straight away center-410 Center to right-387 Right- 330 About the Highway, you don’t actually hear it during the game. Just like when at a Chiefs game you can’t hear the highway. There have been other renovations to add other dinning and drinking areas. I may be bias, but I would highly recommend going there. Kansas City is a sports town that loves their Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC the MLS team and Current of the NWSL.

As a Torontonian, he didn't fully do the Rogers Centre (formerly the SkyDome, which is a MUCH better name), justice. During the 2022 offseason, the stadium has been undergoing a massive $300mil renovation which I believe will allow the stadium to rival the best in the league. Did I mention that there's an actual hotel integrated in the stadium too? It's out in centre field in between the video screen! While the view doesn't hold a candle to Pittsburgh's, the view of the CN Tower (the tall tower outside right beside the stadium which wasn't fully shown fully) is also a pretty sight during summer evenings. Outside of the stadium and right next to the CN Tower is the Toronto Railway Museum, Ripley's Aquarium, and Metro Convention Centre. The stadium is located in the centre of the city and is a short walk away from the Harbourfront, our basketball/hockey stadium, and Union Station (our version of New York's Grand Central Terminal) which allows easy access to the rest of the city's attractions through public transit and trains to other cities. Unlike a lot of other MLB ballparks, it's located in a major city as Toronto is the biggest in Canada. There's plenty to do and you can easily spend a day just hanging around the CN Tower alone
