This loss closed the book on the window for these Phillies teams from 07-11. That great 4-man rotation of Lee, Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt never materialized to be dominant force like we saw from the Braves in the 90s. They haven't made the playoffs since, as well.

@jdb3162 жыл бұрын
While you are correct that the Lee-Halladay-Hamels-Oswalt rotation didn't become quite the dominant force it was expected to be, the bigger problem for those Phillies teams was they were unable to manufacture runs. Better pitchers like Carpenter took away their ability to mash, and sluggers like Howard, Utley, etc. struggled to manufacture runs without slugging the ball. Also, Brad Lidge was never the same after his perfect 2008 season.

As a Mets fan, even though they fucked us in 2006, gotta thank the Cards for beating our NL east rivals in 2 postseasons in a row. They beat the Phils in 2011 (and helped knock the Braves out that year), and in 2012 beat the Braves and Nationals. Cool stuff. Heck, maybe the Cardinals would have beaten the Mets in the 2015 NLCS? So a little presumptive thank you for losing to the Cubs, as well, I guess.

Yes he was. As a Cards fan. I was very comfortable we had him to start if it was a Game 5 or Game 7 winner take all game. A big part of why the Cards beat the Rangers in the World Series was because Game 6 got postponed because of rain. That allowed Carpenter to pitch Game 7 on 3 days rest instead of only having 2 days rest and only, maybe, be a reliever.

No analytics. No pitch count concerns. No concerns about going through the order a third or fourth time. Just the eye test, and a manager trusting his starter in a winner-take-all Game 5, and riding him to the win. Yes, games can be won 1-0 if your pitcher can make that lone run stand up. This was the opportunity that was robbed from Blake Snell.

Where I recall the Phillies probably lost the game was in one inning where it was 2 outs and Howard was at the plate and had a 3-0 count and he swung and hit one to center field for the 3rd out. I can't remember if there was anyone on base or not, but I remember thinking that's when the Phillies lost the game. At that point, you need to manufacture runs anyway possible.
