Shohei is like a film or TV script that gets laughed out of a producer's office for being "completely insane". I mean, just try pitching this story in 2010: "Check this out. You have a baseball pitcher who can hit, smash homers, _and_ steal bases. He undergoes Tommy John surgery, so he can't throw, but he's cleared by the docs to be the DH with an approved brace on his throwing arm. He joins the 40-40 club by hitting a walk-off grand slam, and goes on to start the 50-50 club by going 6 for 6 with a hat trick of home runs." Just listing off all the history he's made in this year alone gives you an idea of how bonkers Shohei's talent and skill are.

This is to say nothing of other advantages which are not nearly as important as the aforementioned including the sizable increase in the dimensions of the bases(+3 inches) and the insane restrictions now placed upon pitchers with regard to what they can do to deter, discourage and hamper runners in their base-stealing efforts. Must I issue the now tiresome disclaimer for imbeciles like you? : Anyone with a functioning brain recognizes Ohtani for the supreme talent that he is but this doesn't justify exaggerating and getting hysterical over feats that are entirely predictable considering the conditions afforded him in this day and age. "50/50" 's would have been common-place under such forgiving circumstances(playing only one way for all 154/162 games) in days of yore alas that was not acceptable even post-DH era unless you were pretty much washed up or of no use in the field.

Ohtani season is definitely historic. He achieved a milestone in Major League Baseball that no one else ever accomplished. Reaching 50-50 is truly an amazing feat in itself. Many tried to diminish his accomplishment by saying the rules changed and pitch clock and increase in bag size, if so why are there ONLY THREE PLAYERS WITH 50+ STOLEN BASES? Shouldn't there be 10 players? Back in 2014 there were three players with 50+ stolen bases and one had 49 stolen bases, in 2007 six players and 50+ stolen bases and Jose Reyes had 78 stolen bases that year. Strange isn't it? the rules changed were supposed to make it easier to steal bases but Jose Reyes destroyed everyone from the last two years even Ronald Acuna. Stats: AVG .310 HR54 SB59 R134 RBI130 XBH99 TB411 OPS1.036 bWAR 9.2 (Highest ever for DH) fWAR 9.1 (Highest ever for DH) Ohtani is ONE XBH and ONE stolen base away from 100 XBH and 60 stolen bases, missed opportunity if you asked me. It's unlikely we'll see another player achieving 50-50 again. Ohtani on paper is less productive than Aaron Judge's stats in some categories but his Judge stats from this season historic? No, we'll see someone with 58 home runs and 144 RBI again. Judge is lucky to have Juan Soto in front of him, two players with 40+ home runs and 129 walks on the same team is insanely crazy. Judge would have far fewer RBI if Soto played 3rd and Judge as leadoff like Ohtani. The leadoff will always have fewer RBI than RUN, not surprisingly Ohtani led the League in RUN at 134 and 2nd in RBI at 130. Ohtani probably won't be able to hit 60 home runs in his career but I can say the same for Judge, he probably won't be able to reach 400 Total Bases in a single season and even with a season when he hit 62 home runs he still came up short at 391 TB. Both are great players nevertheless.
@johnh20843 ай бұрын

In the discussion of Ohtani's unprecedented catalogue of elite baseball skills, his base stealing has been acknowledged in past seasons as a serious threat - but his accomplishments this season have blown away all expectations. Many people want to dismiss that as simply a consequence of bigger bases and limited throw-overs by the pitcher. If that were just the case then players who are faster than Ohtani should have similar or higher numbers of sb to him. Ohtani is ranked 158 in MLB sprint speed - of the 157 players rated faster only one - Elly De La Cruz - has more stolen bases, and the others aren't even close to his total. Most are less than half his number. Certainly OBP is a factor but again doesn't explain his dominance - Bobby Witt Jr is rated #1 in sprint speed in MLB and has an almost identical OBP to Ohatni but only 31 sb to Ohtani's 59. Ohtani's success at stealing bases is the result of determination and hard work. He has honed the art of reading pitchers and his slide technique is virtually perfect - he never goes in head first and always targets the outfield corner of the base with his right foot.

It's crazy to think that an injured pitcher who hasn't pitched a game in 2024 is a leading contender for MVP. The talent of this man is off the charts. I just hope he can stay healthy and pitch next year. The man has singlehandedly got me back into baseball again. If your a card collector, now is the time to get his dodger cards and you can still find his "Rookie" cards within reason....Shohei might end up being the greatest player to play the game, his cards are gonna be worth gold. Oh yeah...and Shohei got me back into collecting baseball cards after selling all my cards away years ago and saying "Never Again"....Dude is a Unicorn....
And we still not certain if this is his peak yet. Insane

@jefferson-fm8wh3 ай бұрын
Remember Ohtani is recovering from a UCL (basically playing with one good arm) set a record no player has ever accomplished going 50-50 in one of the greatest games, also broke a team record for most homeruns, most extra base hits, most consecetive games with an RBI with ten straight games as a leaderoff hitter and set the teams Runs record for a season.
@龍が如く-l9t3 ай бұрын
there should be some debates about the greatest season ever, but all we can say is Shohei Ohtani is the GOAT🐐 who can pitch 2.33ERA and 219K while hitting 54HR and 59 stolen bases in other season!? In addition, he is recovering from TJ. People will talk this is unbelievable until the human beings disappear.

54-59 was just a little short! It's rare to hear people say this, but I'm excited because it seems like the guy left an unsolved problem in mathematics. This season's performance was also fun. Thank you Ohtani. Now on to the postseason!🔥

Shohei Ohtani ends up leading the National League in: Home runs (54) RBI (130) On-base percentage (.390) Slugging percentage (.646) OPS (1.036) Runs (134) Extra-base hits (99) Total bases (411) He will also lead in advanced metrics such as bWAR, fWAR, OPS+, wRC+. He finishes second in batting average, stolen bases, hits, walks and intentional walks. He also barely fell short of the triple crown and a 40/40/40 season by two doubles. As far as offense you’re not gonna find many seasons better by a player in the live ball era who hasn’t done PEDs.

Shohei had his best offensive season this year, Yet he doesn't lead Judge in any Category, except stolen bases If judge played in the National league in 2024, he would have won the Triple Crown, He leads ohtani and all of the National league in Homers Rbi, and Average

His 59 SB including 36 SB in a row without getting caught is also AMAZING ( Probably the best in one season ) This record still alive and can be add to next season. He is in top 9 position right now. Top one is Vince Coleman with 50 SB in a row.
He is the first pitcher to win the MVP without pitching a single ball

I say as great as this season was, it's not his greatest - that would be 2022 when he also went 15-9 with a 2.32 ERA in 166 IP and threw 219 ks while driving in 95

I would say it was his greatest offensive season. I don’t think anyone can argue that. But I think is 2021-2023 seasons were all better. All this shows is how insanely good he truly is. I’m glad people are finally getting on board!

7 months ago, who would have thought that Shohei Ohtani would be 50-50 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery? No, probably close to half of the people expected that. This in itself represents the abnormality of the Shohei Ohtani phenomenon. Ichiro once said at his retirement press conference, ``He might win the home run title the year after he wins the Cy Young Award.'' And it will become a reality.
