I’m an avid Garmin user but have tested various brands over the years. I finally decided to give the series 10 a shot primarily because I wanted to see if there was a benefit to cell coverage. (I don’t carry a cell phone while running and actually took a hard spill on a long run 8 miles from my house and my Garmin was worthless by telling me I had an incident but literally couldn’t do anything else lol). I’ve been using the series 10 for my usual tracking which includes marathon training plan, strength, occasional cycling, trail running, hiking. I find it works great, and it’s a peace of mind for my wife and I. For those who think “you can’t train seriously” with an Apple Watch need to stop, integrated with training peaks it’s been great and I get all the data I need. Not to mention through my carrier I pay $15 for the watch AND data plan every month, versus the $800 I forked out for my last Garmin. Yes it could be better, but honestly if Garmin doesn’t step up their game I could see more people jump ship. Please Apple; bring precision start to the series watches, that is like my major gripe.

"You have been in an accident". - Thanks Garmin! 🤦♂️ I've seen so many people knock Apple's fitness tracking but it's actually quite accurate on both the GPS and heart rate tracking front. It's really solid at this point in comparison to Garmin. But yeah, I have no idea why the precision start isn't on the Series device. Why not apple? 🤷🏻♂️

Hi Matt, I have never owned an Apple Watch but now looking into it for my wife & I. Mainly for health tracking and fitness. I'm disappointed the 02 sensor was removed after series 8. But, is it really that important? I'm thinking features like ECG and BP Monitoring is much more important. My real question is - is it worth buying the 10 or maybe saving some $ and buying an older version like the 8? If so, what version would you recommend.
@mlegrand6 күн бұрын
No, I don’t think the O2 monitoring was ever that interesting as a health metric for me personally. Blood Pressure would be amazing if Apple can ever figure it out and implement it. Maybe for the next AW Ultra 3? 🤷🏻♂️ You could definitely save money by going with an older model. I *think* some of the AI capabilities will go back to the Series 9 but that’s just me speculating on future feature advancements. GPS and Heart rate accuracy improved a good bit after the Series 6 or so. Hope that helps and enjoy your new watches!!!

Matt ... your videos are works for art! Amazing editing but also great analysis on the watches. I have been a Garmin Fenix 5 -> Epix user for 15 years or so. I just switched to an Apple Watch Series 10 and did not enjoy the running experience. I think I'm just so used to Garmin and the way I can get my data. With Apple Watch I have to join Apple Fitness with a monthly few to get all the data. Nice watch for everything else but fitness. So the question is now which Garmin do I go back to? I think I'm going to stick with the forerunner series so I'm looking at the 265 and the 965 I am not crazy about the curved glass on the 965 but I like the screen size. Hi. Are you currently using only Apple Watch or has Garmin been sidelined? I've been with Garmin since Fenix 6, I currently have 8 but I'm very much considering Ultra 2. What's your opinion on these devices, is it worth switching to Ultra 2? I work out a lot at the gym, generally a lot, I also swim and go hiking. I'm happy with Fenix but I miss the smart function. Are free apps on Apple Watch able to show training statistics the same or similar to Garmin?
@mlegrand19 күн бұрын
I’m typically using two watches at a time and switching between brands frequently. At the moment I have an AWU 2 on my right wrist and the Fenix 8 on the left. There are some paid apps that help bring Apple’s training tracking in par with Garmin but it’s hard to beat what Garmin provides for free after purchasing it. I think there’s a lot you’d love about the AWU (how well it’s integrated with the iPhone mainly) but still a lot you’d miss from the Garmin. 🤷🏻♂️
@koshi855319 күн бұрын
@ It's really not cool to buy additional apps to be able to fully monitor your workouts. I wanted to check what Ultra has to offer because it's a really good watch with good sensors and most importantly I wouldn't have to carry my phone with me because I would have it on my wrist, but I think I'll give up because I've gotten too used to what Garmin offers when it comes to workouts and I don't feel like paying for something that should be a basic option.

My own opinion Depending what watch you’re coming from, 100% buy it, I had the series 3, it worked perfectly fine.. but once I upgraded, everything felt perfect, I’d say series 5 and below you should upgrade, series 6 is your option to stay or not, and series 7 and above you shouldn’t upgrade
@mlegrand15 күн бұрын
I agree with you that Series 5 and below would see a pretty big upgrade in performance. I noticed a lot more accuracy in both GPS and heart rate coming from the Series 6. Hey Matt. I have been looking several of your videos again lately... I am been going back and forth between Apple and Garmin and love them both for different reasons (Apple for the ecosystem integration and Garmin for the detailed recovery metrics, sport tracking and connectivity). I am a mix athlete (road running 30-40km/week, swimming 3-4km/w, and starting to bike). Was looking at Ultra 2/S10 on one end and Fenix 8/965 on the other... Remain fairly undecided about the choice to be made but value good built and don't want to stand out too much while not being looking like everyone (yes, I know). Recently tried the Pace Pro but lacking integration, music playing (Apple ecosystem), recovery metric/morning report (Garmin ecosystem). I Last but not least, don't want to sport 02 devices as utterly costly and useless. Any thought?
@mlegrand12 күн бұрын
You sound like me except I'm always sporting two watches (one on each wrist like a weirdo). I have a video coming up about how Apple is slowly becoming more like Garmin and vice versa but I think it's going to come down to whether you want to gravitate toward the integration of the Apple ecosystem or the still better (in my opinion) recovery metrics from Garmin. Enjoying my Series 10 so far. I'm coming from Series 6, so very nice upgrade for me. Wondering what your experience is with the "pause rings" feature in Watch OS 11.2. In using it, it seems to preserve your "streaks", but still collects data re: Move & Exercise rings which negatively impacts "Trends". I train 8 weeks on and one week off. Before the update allowing rings to be paused, I used to adjust my ring Goals way down during my off week to allow for adequate rest & recovery (without much negative impact on Trends). I tried pausing my rings for my week off and really rested fully, but the data the Watch collected sent my Trends way down. I was expecting the Pause Rings feature to pause all data collected towards Ring goals (i.e. as if the paused time never existed). Curious how you understand the Pause feature to work and your experience with this feature. Thanks.

The Ultra 2 HR monitor far lags the 10 in accuracy by quite a margin. That's unfortunate.
@mlegrand17 күн бұрын
I wouldn’t say quite a margin but I’ve always found that bigger watches bounce a good bit more which is very hard on optical heart rate sensors. Otherwise they’re the same sensor and (probably) the same algorithm for sorting heart rate data. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

This year battery on 10 anniversary it’s soo disrespectful for costumers. I always have a smartwatch now galaxy 5 pro I use both android iPhone and want Apple Watch but what I can look only to ultra and ok it’s expensive but actually it’s 3 year old watch for the same price in 2025. How to use it everyday charging think about battery on the routine impossible for me definitely. I’m never without battery but I think with this watch it will be problem. I’m not someone with always same routine. Tell me if I’m tripping on the battery but how to use it
@mlegrand21 күн бұрын
No I agree. I've often been charging this while I sleep which isn't great because then it's not tracking all of your sleep metrics. 🤷♂️ Apple needs to prioritize battery life here at some point. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

Such a ridiculous battery in almost 2025.... that's crazy!
@mlegrand21 күн бұрын
Yeah, I have high hopes that Apple will update the display technology in 2025 with micro-LED and hopefully increase battery life. I might be a little too optimistic. 🤷🏻♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

Can you give a recommendation of a watch, with better battery life, that can do everything an Apple Watch can? I’ll wait…

It charges in 30 mins, not bad

Thin is good, comfortable
@Sinasi0821 күн бұрын
@rgmALC take it easy. I did not say it's a bad watch.... Apple has the same battery since the beginning, which is pretty low. No improvement... they can do better. All tech reviews that I follow and respect say the same thing, Matt, Desfilt, DC rainmaker, Chase the summit etc. But it's your money and your preferences.. you buy whatever makes you happy. But sorry the battery sucks. AWU2 is a bit better.

No matte black finish is a deal breaker.

Matte black would be fantastic. I wonder if it would hold up well. 🤔 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

So many smartwatch manufacturers offer battery life of 10-14 days or more on a single charge. Why not you Apple?
@mlegrand21 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's something I wish they'd focus on for a cycle. I've got to imagine they could at least aim for 3-5 days. 🤷♂️

Between working 2 jobs, I really appreciate the "nap tracking that the Samsung Galaxy watch does automatically..this is where Apple watch falls short something so simple yet they havent caught up..

I would switch from Garmin, but am not a fan of how the Apple Watch measures resting heart rate. Garmin is taking measurements every second.
@mlegrand19 күн бұрын
How often is Apple taking heart rate readings? I know it’s hard on the battery to do frequent checks. And apples already struggling in that department. 🤔

@ I mean, you said series 9. If you know about Apple Tech. You’ll know that the series 7-9 were basically the same.
@mlegrand21 күн бұрын
@@unvcht5046 - Yeah, I'm pretty familiar. The Series 9 and 10 have more neural cores that *might* be needed to run machine learning and AI heavy tasks. For example, double tap is reserved for those newer devices with the updated hardware.
@unvcht504621 күн бұрын
@ you know they’re not capable of AI task with 1GB of RAM in the watch. It will take years until they implement AI into the Apple Watch.
@mlegrand21 күн бұрын
@@unvcht5046 - Just a heads up. Machine Learning is a branch of AI. (Artificial Intelligence) These watches use AI to detect things like the double tapping of your fingers (via the hardware on the watch) to determine that the user wants to select the default item.

I upgraded from series 6 to series 10. I’ve had bumper protection on both but no screensavers and no scratches either after 4 years with Series 6. I paid extra for cellular on both. Titanium and Ultra 2 are not worth the additional cost for me. It was however worth it for my friend who has the Ultra because she travels often and benefits from the extended battery life.

If I wasn't a reviewer, I think I could be ok with the Apple Watch Ultra or even this AWS10. I don't need all that much from a watch but enjoy swimming, biking and running.

Yeah, I was able to get the AWS10 46mm and the AWU 2 in black a little bit early and then the 42mm on the 20th. Apple has an editorial loan program for reviewers but I bought an additional size at launch.
