Yes, no parent ever taught them to STFU when one is caught doing a bad thing and that no amount of talking BS will get them out of it. @JusticeAA Exactly. Judges don't like the idea of their convictions being overturned on appeal -- appellate judges overturning convictions have a way of publicly pissing on the trial judge from a great height. It's one of the great traditions of the Bar. So they do their best to appeal-proof their convictions by being scrupulously fair even to the point of seeming indulgence.

@@Tindometari That actually makes sense, didn't think of that since I've noticed a lot of judges tend to let things go on for awhile before putting a stop to it. Unless it's physical violence, most judges actually seem to let a defendant talk themselves into more jail time before putting an end to their rambling probably due to time constraints and also no one wants to hear someone blabber about stuff they have no idea about.

Pretty hard to force someone to keep silent. A defense lawyer has no authority to tell a court officer to remove anyone from the courtroom.

Angela Hagerman Maybe she was. In any event... this isn't the type of person that anyone is going to be able to reason with and get calmed down. He was bound and determined to interrupt and be disrespectful and speak out of turn, just as he did, and no matter what any lawyer, judge, or court officer said to him, he was going to continue acting up. That's why he had to be removed.

What do you want her to do, personally ball-gag him? All she can do really is shush him, or warn him that this is a really bad idea -- but I think she's already figured out that warning's lost on him. So she does her best until the judge decides she's put up with enough.

I have a clean record. No alcohol/drugs/tobacco use my entire life. If a 41 year old disabled male (me) can keep a clean record despite his horrific childhood circumstances, then so can anyone else.
