As an MSW student, the NASW code of ethics is heavily drilled into us. By pushing oils, the therapist breached not only a conflict of interest, but also breached the standard of not using your position as a therapist to take advantage of your client.

I'm a therapist and the young living story had me fuming! She was waaaaay out of line. We do not have the training or expertise to mess with medication and she is 100% violating both ethical and legal standards. This doesn’t have anything to do with an MLM, but years ago my then husband got one of his therapist friends to try to convince me I was possessed by a demon! was flipping through my mom's YL "guidebook" and randomly landed on a page for "treatments of abuse". they literally NEVER suggested going to a therapist or finding somewhere safe to go to to escape. no, instead, try all of these expensive oils! deadass some of them were named things like "forgiveness" and the suggestion for physical abuse was to apply that oil to the spots where you were fucking assaulted. absolutely disgusting. ive been trying to get my mom to stop taking stock in that piece of garbage book and that was one that opened her eyes a bit. still working on things with her, luckily she isnt actively buying from them anymore but she is using up the rest of her points from over the years.

As a resident in counseling, I am horrified by the therapist. I'm glad she was reported, but I might also recommend mentioning what happened to the psychiatrist as well, to make sure he/she does not refer clients to Stacy inadvertantly. Therapists and psychiatrists often work together and collaborate when caring for mutual clients, so this might be important to mention, especially if the counselor was trying to suggest client going off their meds... So glad she found a better therapist!

I'm a recovering drug addict and in 2018 I was fresh out of rehab, in sober living and with no job. I went to a marykay party with a friend just to get out of the house and the woman who held the party blew me up for WEEKS!! She even called me from different numbers when I stopped answering. Told her I had been put of rehab for just a month with no job AND that my mother was paying my rent. This woman said "can you ask your mother for 150$ for the starter kit? You'll get it back in the first couple of weeks". I was mortified 😭

As someone who had cancer in 2020 (I’m okay now!), the cancer story made me so mad I literally had to sit down and take a deep breath. „Don’t you want to do something about your cancer“ - oh my God, the rage I would have unloaded on this horrible excuse of a human being. This is so manipulative. People who have cancer are vulnerable, they don’t know if the treatment will actually work and are suffering from the side effects. To tell them that whatever shitty, expensive MLM product you sell can help you is so exploitive and horrible, I am at a loss of words. I would have called her out online and told her to f*** off, and I would have reported her to the company immediately. This is unacceptable behaviour. If somebody tells you they have cancer, your response should be „Oh no, I’m so sorry, I’ll be thinking of you and wish you a fast recovery, how can I help?“, and not „Oh great, a potential vulnerable victim for my pyramid scheme, let me pitch my crappy products to make money off of her!“ Anyway, great video Hannah! Wishing you all the best for your pregnancy! ❤

The therapist makes me so mad. I have patients ask me all the time about essential oils, and my response is that they are welcome to try lavender or peppermint oil (or whatever scent they're asking about) for the calming scent, but that they won't heal you of anything. They just make the environment a little nicer, which is sometimes enough to help with anxiety, but I don't suggest any particular company (that would be unethical), and I certainly don't suggest it as a cure (that's immoral)! I don't have the right to recommend patients come off medication unless I'm seeing problematic changes, and even then I reach out to their PSYCHIATRIST (which I am not) and have a discussion and make suggestions. That's part of being on a treatment TEAM. That patients care is not solely in my hands, but in the hands of multiple people.

I really identified with the girl in the therapist story. I have a lot of the same conditions, including a binge disorder. I gained weight during my recovery (very normal), and my therapist NEVER would have said the solution to my insecurities was to “lose weight.” Old Navy’s BodEquality project really helped me understand my body and embrace body neutrality. They made me feel just like everyone else-I could finally shop in the store with people my age, have the same options and amount of options as everyone else, and I got to stand in the mirror in clothes that fit comfortably and looked flattering. As a fat person, feeling “normal” shouldn’t be underestimated for my mental health, and I can’t imagine how this therapist affected this writer’s mental state.

Oh man this title gave me Vietnam War flashbacks. I used to severely suffer from PMS, my emotions were all over the place and that combined with anxiety disorder meant I was literally crying myself to sleep every night thinking I was gonna die or the world was gonna end. We tried every kind of therapy. Eventually, lastly, we attempted aromatherapy, which is notoriously performed using essential oils. You bet your ass right after I trusted this lady enough to share my deepest traumas with her, she brought out Young Living. She put it in everything, even the tea we drank... I'm not sure that's safe, and it was certainly disgusting. Anyway, I quit another 2 sessions after that. I couldn't stand the MLM mom vibes dripping off of that house.

What sucks about the oily therapist is that it was almost helpful advice with the peppermint. As part of my DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy) we explored scents and smells that were pleasant and distinct to use when we felt dissociated or out of control. Mine is peppermint tea, a friends was coffee beans. Others did use essential oils bought in the discount shops. It would have been useless to try and use it mid crisis. But it is one of many tools I use along with taking medication etc.

A family friend asked me recently how to handle a friend in an mlm. Taking your advice, I told her not to try to get the person out of it. I also told her not to buy anything from them. Support them as a person, but let them know that you do not support that particular business model. I told her to be clear to the person that they are not interested in buying anything, but to also not try to send them anti-MLM content. All that does is drive the person deeper into the MLM. Aside from my sister using proactive, which may have been made by an MLM, this is the closest I’ve ever come to dealing with MLMs. Edit: upon further research, while Roden and Fields did make ProActive, it was before they became an mlm.

So, as someone who's had plenty of mental health problems and gone to a few therapists, you gotta be your own advocate, and if they aren't giving you what you want, you have to do what's best for you. I've heard a number of horror stories from friends, but it's a first for me to hear that someone tried to sell their patient oils. That's insane. And any therapist who'd tell a patient not to take meds is absolutely nuts.

Lots of angry thoughts about the Young Living therapist. How dare she!!! 🤬. I went to school with someone who is now a LMFT (therapist) and she owns her own practice. I was very happy to find this out as I enjoyed the time we previously spent together as seat neighbors because as part of my job, I made referrals to mental health service providers for court involved youth almost everyday. Thankfully before my first referral, I drove by her practice and found that she advertised "therapeutic grade essential oils by Doterra." I never made a referral because I did NOT want to try to explain that to a judge. She lost quite a bit of business from me because of that (I made over 100 referrals each year.) Also, I'm a bit of a hippie. I have been using herbal supplements, organic essential oils, and eating chickweed from my yard long before it became main stream or cool. Young Living products are NOT pure essentials. Pure oils have no color, should NEVER be ingested, and should NEVER be applied more than 1 drop at a time because they can actually be harmful. My Mom and I were both gifted some Young Living oils and those bottles of garbage stained my diffuser beyond cleaning. They are terrible and should never be used. I love diffusing REAL lavender and peppermint organic essential oils when I go to bed, and I occasionally take a bit of valerian extract if I have trouble getting to sleep or relaxing....but ALL of the vitamins, supplements, and oils have been approved by my psychiatrist. If anxiety, depression, and PTSD could be "cured" by oils, supplements, diet, or exercise, I wouldn't pay the crap ton of money I pay to my absolutely wonderful and worth every penny psychiatrist....or my absolutely wonderful and worth every penny therapist. P.S. I did graduate from therapy earlier this year!

I'm getting my masters in mental health counseling to be a therapist, and holy fuck that YL "therapist" makes me want to scream. How is she licensed?!? That was a huge breach of ethics and beneficence/nonmalficence, and she should be barred from practicing

Poor girl, that therapist was sitting there, looking at her, pretending to listen to her but all she could see was how much money she would make off her. Shame on Stacy the Therapist

There is a special place in hell for people who go to restaurants and dont eat. It is so rude, awkward, and embarrassing, and when I was put in a situation to do so against my will, I still bought one of the cheaper things on the menu.I didnt really have money to buy anything extra but I couldnt just go and buy nothing either.

Wow story 2, think you definitely dodged a bullet. Not only by avoiding an MLM but by avoiding signing up under someone that is obviously only nice to get recruits. I hope you told the doctor that refereed you to ‘Stacey’ so he never sends anyone else to her. Aromatherapy can be beneficial in terms of helping you relieve stress, but it’s not going to cure diseases or conditions. Hopefully she looses her license to practice

As a Licensed Professional Counselor that made me have to regulate because that was very dysregulating. I’m glad they got reported and I am so sad that this person had to go through this…

Yesterday at Thanksgiving I could overhear my aunt pitching her Neumi Swish products to my mom for her dogs to use and all I could do was chuckle. Every family gathering is an opportunity. I can't wait to see if she tries it at my wedding in January 😂 thankfully no one in the family takes her seriously so we all just brush it off at this point

for story 2, i'm actually a licensed professional counselor and i cringed because it is sooo unethical to use the therapy session to push a shitty mlm product in session as it borders on crossing the boundary into dual relationships. also, it's one thing to sell oils or bibliotherapy resources through your practice, but you never want to make the therapy session about you selling whatever mlm you're peddling at the expense of the client's time. also it's unethical to make false claims about the effectiveness of a particular therapeutic method. glad she was reported!

I find it amusing how people look for things to get offended by. If I wanted to meet someone somewhere, even if it's only a few miles from their house, and they had to take public transportation of some kind, I would absolutely pick them up rather than make them spend extra time/money to meet me at the destination.

I've had four MLM encounters, two of which were Primerica. The first of those two caused lasting damage to a friendship. I have a (real) sales job and the way these sketchy companies want sales done makes me cringe.

Obligatory "not an mlm" but my sister started having midfullness meetings at work, and in a heartbeat she was pushing employees to order Bach flowers from her, and come to her "meditation retreats". To be fair, she did not charge for these (save for mandatory "tips and donations" in the meditation clases); so I say profit is not allways the motivation. Having a narcissistic saviour complex, or beign starved for admiration and praise as 🎉IS enough to send this people in a self rightgeous power trip towards trespassing behaviour

I love essential oils and use them pretty much daily, from pain management to stress relief. But if my therapist told me I could be cured that way, I'd be pissed. Obviously, that's no true, as I do use oils, and I still have mental health conditions. But more importantly, it's unethical! I am not spending hundreds of dollars on therapy so that someone can tell me to sniff oils! Wow....

Oh boy I have a lot of experiences to send you, so happy I found your channel. As someone chronically ill I can’t even begin on the disgusting opportunistic huns I’ve had to deal with INCLUDING one of my doctors an infectious disease doctor of all people (you’d think she’d idk believe more in science than essential oils but..) and Huns purposely infiltrating the online illness support groups I used to be in

I live in rural PA and I make things. One of the main ways I sell the things I make is local craft fairs and the like. The MLM Huns have started buying spaces and setting up booths at these events. Once I had a Paparazzi Hun Bot spend almost $100 on things from me just to try to pitch me on Paparazzi.

I found you through Charlotte’s videos too! I’ve posted a couple messages on the book of Faces warning friends and family that if they send me any MLM recruitment crap they will be immediately deleted from my friends list and my life! In the past I have helped my sister out with Tupperware (which I still love) and Partylites (which I also love but still have candles everywhere from both buying some and getting them as gifts from that sister))! But I NEVER help my own parties!
