Depends on what you consider "original", because there are people out there that tell others off because they have seen similar characters before. Even thought the creator had done everything on their own. And I don´t mean only appearances, but personalities as well. I consider an OC as a character that has its "Origin" at the person who created it. Because every idea has been there in one way or another.

Wow! That's a good point. It really considers if you think it is original. Since they used different colours I guess that would be kind of original. But yet again they used an already existing character and only changed the colours. I think it if you have a re-colour "OC" then it should be called "UOC" for un-original character. =^.^=

To me, recolouring OCs is kinda like stealing. Especially when they do it to other people's OCs and try to pass it off as their own. I'd rather someone have a shitty OC than a recoloured OC because with a shitty OC, at least they've tried and put some form of effort into it.

Exactly. People just take one thing and make simple changes to it, then poof. It's like colouring an orange rainbow and say you made your own fruit. It's just not yours to begin with, and what's honestly very upsetting is that it's accepted. Although I'm not the best artist I'm embarrassed to say that we have people like this that get more attention than very good artists. Like Mrs. Sans gets a lot more attention than Challa, yet she is a troll (I hope), and Challa puts effort into his work even on shitty free programs. I can't wrap my mind about the fact that people give others with work like recolours much more attention than "real" artists.

I've only done this once, but I took a picture of Twi and recolored it as a really quick way to see of the color scheme worked. It didn't, so I tried a few different colors until it looked okay. Then I took those colors and drew an OC with them that looked nothing like Twilight. I think recolors are alright _as drafts._

I think it is okay if you are altering the colors for experimentation purposes. Just be sure you have something more original when you are done. I also recommend studying color theory.

For me, a recolor OC should be called an AC, an "Artificial Character". Where as, the OC is a "Original Character" there is no other character quite like that one. Their uniqueness and abilities are new, different, and special! An "Artificial Character" is someone or something that has no difference except a few changes in color. These characters often turn out to be the same character as the show or media's. Now that really does puzzle me, why create a "Artificial Character" when you can make an "Original Character"? The OCs already out there are quite unique and special, despite some being Gary Stus or Mary Sues. Now, I know that a lot of people want their ocs to be magical and quite powerful, but they don't need to push it. Take the oc Tyanganda is using. It is a reindeer, but it is most definitely NOT a Gary Stu. This causes his character to be an OC or "Original Character". His OC has flaws and abilities that affect it negatively and positively. I really like that idea of oc, a character that has flaws that sometimes affect them positively, and abilities that sometimes affect them negatively. That's all I have to say for now! Bai!

I feel that Recolor OCs are a way for new artists to experiment with color pallets and designs. They shouldn't be the final product, but you can use them to help people get an idea of what your character looks like if you aren't a good artist, or as a base do you have a reference for later drawings.

I dont mind recolor OCs as long as the story behind the OC isnt a "recolor" as well. In otherwords if the character isnt "X character's long lost sibling", "X character's love interest" or "just like X character, only 20% cooler" but for me the OC is all about the story and not necessarily the visual representation of the OC. I can see however if the OC is JUST a recolor, like Twilight only pink. I'm a horrible artist, I struggle making stick figures. But can I weave a tale around that OC to bring that character to the mind's eye? You betcha. I think that though you can go completely to the other end of the spectrum when it comes to OCs. Making them "too" different. Where you create a cyborg in a medieval universe, where you create an elizabethan noble in space. Or what has been coined as the "dirty peasant" where you're so afraid of making a mary sue, that you make them SO unattractive that most characters in the universe would go "dear god what is that thing!" I think Silver Quill touched on this in his Donut Steele talk that an OC should feel like it fits the universe while having some unique features but at the same time not making a ripoff copy. And that goes for in illustrated art as well as the written.

However not only are they pretty much stealing a copyrighted character but eventually they'll end up stealing a character that belongs to an artist and re coloring it. The show did recolors and at least twice I think it was deliberate. Daring Do was a Rainbow Dash recolor and I think it was because RD was relating to her so much. Moon Dancer was supposed to be Twilight if she hadn’t moved to Ponyville. Photo Finish is harder to not see as just a recolor minus the horn and plus clothes.

i really dislike recolors, normally people who make recolors of oc's are mostly ten year olds with no art program or any art technique.so they screenshot a picture of (insert mlp character here___) and use the paint bucket tool, thinking that no one will know they recolored! they could atleast draw on paper and ask a friend to draw it digitally for them, and if that's not possible they could watch tutorials on how to draw ponies and practice their own art styles.

I agree with you completely, but some people, such as myself, use a recolour OC as a kind of starting point to get a rough idea of what their character will look like, and then go on developing from there, adding unique features, tweaking anything that shows obvious features of the starting character, things like that, so recolour OCs aren't all that bad depending on the way they're used

I agree with you, recolors are fine as a training-tool for testing out color-schemes and whatnot but they should never be used to replace a serious drawing. I make all of my characters ( and my crossover-art too for that matter) in my own style, it just feels more rewarding when you see the finished product. Though another big reason is that I just don't feel that the typical MLP: FiM-style fits my drawings, it is too simplistic for my tastes.

Does it really matter if some kid makes a pony oc that's re-colored from a canon character? A lot of kids aren't confident enough to try drawing on their own and may just need encouragement. Maybe let them know about free tutorials or programs they can practice on. As long as they're not hurting anyone, just let them have fun and figure out their style.

Credit the base. Bases are fine to use for a little bit, but you probably don't want to become too dependent on them. Try to draw everything on your own after a while. Bases are great for reference though if you're drawing in the MLP style. I've never actually used bases before so this is just based (see what i did there?) on experience with people who use bases.

It lets you be creative before you have the confidence to try drawing it yourself. For those making an OC, though, I just want to give you this one, crucial tip: Make your OC's personality first. Come up with likes, dislikes, dreams, and ambitions. If you are doing an OC of yourself (something very hard to do), you have to be able to look at yourself critically. What are you strong at? What are some of your flaws? What is your general personality? THEN come up with the design. Make it reflect the personality of your character. And if you really must use assets from the show, add something unique, something different, but not something visually superficial. That difference has to be related to the personality of that character. This kind of honest self-reflection required for a true "ponysona" is immensely difficult, and it is one of the reasons I have an OC for the main character in my story, but she isn't me. It is a lot easier to create a new character than to create yourself. And I have to urge you to just try and draw your OC yourself. And don't give up, either. I tried and failed multiple times to try and draw a pony. Vectoring, while a little hard to get used to the controls, is remarkably easy, as it is quite simple to "trace" over an image from the show, adding things or modifying it slightly to your liking. And drawing comes more easily with time. And those "how to draw a pony" videos are somewhat useful as well. They taught me the basic components for a pony, which really helped my proportions.

I see pony creator as a tool to create a visual reference of an OC, before approaching an artist to draw them for you, if you can't draw. You can see which colours go best together so that you don't create an eye bleeding abomination. There are plenty of artists who will make you a pic of your OC for free, you just have to look around, like on forums. Regarding bases, I make my own but it's understandable that not everyone can draw bases. I'd rather see an OC made with a base rather than a recolour any day.

I personally cannot stand recolour ocs, because I feel like it hinders an artists ability to improve properly ((Similarly to bases)). I understand that drawing is difficult, maybe more for some than others, but putting in effort is still 1000% better than a recolour in my opinion. +Dashie The Wolf Tyandaga's right! I actually use GIMP, which is a free paint program. I used to use MS Paint, but my laptop didn't come with it and I didn't have the money to buy it, so instead I looked into good free paint programs and I found GIMP, which works out really well! The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't make certain curved lines because it doesn't really have a line tool, but other than that it works if you can't get any of the other things like Photoshop and them.

Great video, I really enjoyed it. My personal opinion on recolor ocs is less then positive. I really dislike recolor ocs because most of the time people try to claim it as original work and this is board line art theft. People take a design that others spend hours creating and make a cheap ten minute knock off and claim it as their own. I am not against people making art based off of others work, but I do not like it people use other people's ideas and designs and make cheap knock off versions. Recolor ocs are cheap, lazy, and broad line art theft. The good reason for a recolor is have a parallel universe or something like that. Now of course this is just my opinion and in no way shape or form does this mean recolor ocs are bad, I just personally don't like them.

As a person in this fandom that doesn’t have an OC, or an AC (Artificial Character) I agree with you. In Spanish class, sometimes while I’m waiting for the teacher to arrive (she also teaches at the high school) I would just doodle fantasies of real MLP characters, making a not-true-at-all picture story and sometimes, if I loose interest in the lesson, which almost never happens, I do the actions above. I also LOVE to write fantasy, as a younge woman who reads that genre herself, and I put SO MUCH EFFORT into the characters I make up. I get so many original ideas, and wanting to bad to get them into my notebook, sometimes temporarily stop writing the current story, and write a bit about the new story. I strongly dislike AC’s, or “recolor OC’s,” as you described it. If I were to make an OC, it would be an alicorn (because of my experiences) that would most likely have a quill as a cutie mark, because of my love of writing. I would never want to make a Mary-Sue, and I don’t believe I ever will make an OC, as I don’t have the correct tools to do so. But I don’t like AC’s.

Now I'm starting to think if my OC is a recolour... Her name is Gretel, like my username on literally everything. I love music, and Vinyl, so the mane is hers, tail is same. She's a uni, but when she's angered or powered up, she's an ali. Oh, the most important part: The horn is -a baguette!!- long and skinny. The mane is black and white while her body is gray, along with a lot of black markings on her body. Sort of original eyes, just really different from the normal pony eyes. I've drawn her a few times, but she is just so complex that I don't really do it unless I feel really motivated. She's supposed to look edgy, and cool, not plain and simple. Her head is a really dark blue. Hooves are dark blue. Her personality is basically just me, minus the joking and meming attitude. Black and Dark Blue are my favorite colours, but I don't want to change her from what she is now. So basically the summary of all this is.... *_Does a complex OC count as a recolour OC?_*

I personally don't mind them, but they usually are "long lost sistres" which is the only thing I hate about them. Sometimes they can look really cool if they have a good color combination, such as that re-color Twilight (not with the gten horn, just no) was okay, the mane outline differed a lit from the base color which I liked, kinda like Vinyl Scratch vectors where her coat is a pale yellow with a pale pink outline, It looks okay to me. And I even made a re-colored Fluttershy oc for my friend named Stella Galaxy, and she loved it, along what my other friends! It's obvious it is lazy, bit they can have a great outcome! Some recolors are just basic concepts of what you want, and then you edit them further when you have more materials to make a more original character. Anyway, this is just my two cents, my own opinion. This comment is getting long, I should stop. Lol X3.

Damn I got used to seeing recolor ocs from the little MLP blind bag toys that you get from the dollar store... like, fucking trixie looks like rarity instead of rainbow dash or fluttershy. There used to be an official fluttershy that was a lazy copy of the rainbow dash model and it looked UGLY. They have a cute one now tho. I did catch someone on ponytown copying one of my characters, what they copied was the hairstyle and its colors and added one stripe of a different color, they copied the cutie mark, and the fact that they're a pegasus and just changed the rest. It looked good, but just e u g h . . . . I also had this friend on pt who wouldn't stop making all their ocs with the same hairstyle and same accessories AND same cutie mark... I had to physically talk to them at school and teach them how to make an oc without recoloring the same thing over and over. She kept sending me like 30 or so ocs before I did that.

Recolers make me so mad!!! I say this because as an artist myself if someone were to take my character and recolor it and claim it as their own, technically they can by copyright law because they changed at least 3 things. Not to mention that it's just down right lazy. I have spent a long time developing my Oc as a sona for my self and a character to write about. I am not the first half breed, but I did come up with the combo on my own, only finding out about the other half breed after the fact. The development gives you freedom to do what ever. What people who do recolors or rely on the generator too much don't seem to realize that if you can't draw, write. You could write about your character to help us understand. Start at bullet points, then start adding detail. Example -red coat -yellow mane -male Ect This broad boned stallion has a shaggy deep burgundy coat and his dusty yellow mane is cut short in military fashion. See?

There is nothing wrong with that so long as you are actively trying to get a picture, or you have some form of your character that is not just a recolor. Just don't rely on recolors and the oc generator to do all the work for you. Try looking for commissions, or try drawing with "how to draw" demonstrations.

Tyandaga I was really waiting for you to address the in-show recolours, but you ignored them entirely. :/ Mostly what you seem to hate are Mane Six recolours with a tacky colour scheme (the second point being my personal pet peeve of any Pony OC, however it's realized.) A background, or one-off pony recolour OC that has well-coordinated colours and an original Cutie Mark could blend easily into the MLPverse and I doubt anyone would bat an eyelash.

I completely agree with all of this. One of my favorite things about creating a MLP OC or any OC in general is coming up with backstory, how they look, what they're special talent is and I've created so many MLP OC's that I've fallen in love with because they are unique to me and my art style. Creating a recolor takes out a lot of the fun especially when you could go crazy with the design and colors.
