I’m a pretty hardcore MLS fan and I listen to ETR religiously, but every time roster rules and salary cap gymnastics are discussed, I get pretty lost and always find myself wishing that someone who knows their way around would just explain this to me. I can’t tell you how helpful this intro to roster mechanisms is!!

Love this sicko stuff. I loved this kind of thing when allocation disorder was still around. Maybe you and Paul should bring it back!!

Awesome content! I’ve heard this done before in hour+ podcasts but having it in a “short” 18 mins was great.

Fantastic video! I've been a pretty casual viewer of MLS for years now, and the roster rules have always such an enigma for me. I finally feel like I kind of understand what's going on now lol

I'm a dedicated supporter of the NBA since the 1990's and MLS since 2018... and I understand the NBA's roster rules about as well as I do MLS's roster rules, which is to say not well at all. But I enjoy my teams just the same.

Got half way thru the video but I needed an mental break so I went and did my calculus homework.

No way MLS roster rules can be explained in under 18 minutes. Would be a 300 level college course nobody would voluntarily sign up for.

This and the A-League in Australia also has pretty complicated salary rules. That’s the reality of being resourceful with your money while having to keep up in a sport where dollars would actually be thrown into a pit if that meant you get to play inadequately at a higher competition next season.

Great video! If a team sells a homegrown and gets allocation money from it does that expire? For example with selling Cade cowell do the quakes have to use that money this season?

What I want to know is 1- Why isn't the cap higher? 2 - How much could MLS clubs responsibly spend if they had no limit?

I think we need to create a cult of the 'stache for MLS. But to answer your question it was really fun when you were not making me second guess my decision to watch your video by telling me its not fun.

Great video! I’d love to see a video that explains how your job works. Like obviously not giving away sources or important info, but showing kinda a day in your life? Like how does your job actually work? (Mean no disrespect in the question)

we lost paul and sam's deep dives. there is a space to fill. hoping you do more and more time league mechanisms and roster rules
@chepito2k109 ай бұрын
Maybe some YT shorts explaining each mechanism like what is GAM, how does it come to exist if there's already a salary budget, why did TAM start up, what's the point of international slots, why does Houston only have 7 permanent ones and RBNY get 9, etc

Tom, how does the international rules affect the Canadian teams?
@philipsmith93899 ай бұрын
From MLS' roster rules webpage: Canada-based clubs: For Canadian clubs, a domestic player is either a Canadian citizen or the holder of certain other special status (i.e., has been granted refugee or asylum status), a player who qualifies under the Homegrown International Rule, or a U.S. Domestic Player by Roster Compliance Date. There is no limit as to the number of U.S. Domestic Players or Canadian Domestic Players on a Canadian club's roster; provided, however, a Canadian club is required to have a minimum of three Canadian Domestic Players on its roster at all times.

who is the front office staff of each team that is responsible for fully understanding the roster rules?
@rupelfc9 ай бұрын
Could you buyout a player to get rid of their salary budget and then resign them? I am thinking if you have a player who is a DP and can't be bought down, could you buy him out and then resign him so that he could be bought down? Not sure that question makes sense.
@rupelfc9 ай бұрын
So couldn't the U-22 initiative players be considered as "Super" DPs since their transfer fee is not counted against the salary cap?
@tombogert9 ай бұрын
Nope. They have a fixed salary cost to quality (can't be more than the senior budget charge, which was $651k last year). DPs have no such restrictions
@rupelfc9 ай бұрын
@@tombogert thanks for the clarification.

This video was definitely more fun than my day job as a claims attorney. You think roster rules will ever change to encourage MORE spending on players by owners? (Like a salary floor.)
@davidday23739 ай бұрын
MLS teams are free to spend $100,000,000+ on their team roster if they wanted under their rules. The "Salary Cay" is a actually a mis-nomer, MLS does NOT have a "hard cap". There are teams that spend under $10M, essentially not really using the DP spots for what they're intended.
