Thankyou. For me the most important sentence was "I will show you the beauty of this piece." Will keep this forever. Thank you 🙏

Stage fright has many causes. Some are psychological but for some they are physiological. For instance my friend was a coffee and sugar addict which increased her baseline cortisol and adrenaline (stress hormones). When she quit sugar and coffee and had more magnesium and protein, her stage nerves went away 😄

Thank you Greg for showing what it takes not to have fear in front of others. Personally, and lately, I played in front of someone I didn't know. But strangely, I felt comfortable and at ease. It was in my home. I felt encouraged. This person was a musician. He plays the trumpet. When he asked me to play it again, I did. I said to myself no fuss and simply do it. (it was the waltz).

Wonderful! Also, playing at our own homes is the most comfortable

Thank you Greg! I was hoping you would spend some time on stage fright. I totally agree with your suggestions. I think the worst enemies of performers are the fear of failure and the fear of being judged. But the bottom line is that fear of anything while performing leads to lack of concentration on the music. Once we lose our concentration and think of anything other than the music and on making it beautiful, we start making mistakes and then "the train derails." We have to stay focused on the music. After all, it is not about us. It is about the composer and the music. We are just a conduit. The other thing that I find helpful is to learn to rescue ourselves from mistakes without being distracted. If we make a mistake, it's good to learn to keep going, move on, and forget it. Try to keep thinking about the next phrase and about making it beautiful. I know that even the great Horowitz played wrong notes. But he never stopped and panicked! He kept going and the beauty of his playing took over. This is especially difficult to achieve if one is playing a Bach or a Mozart piece because then, the performer is without "a safety net" and mistakes are hard to hide. But, it's something that I like to keep in mind. Thanks again Greg for your very helpful suggestions.

Thank you! Tomorrow I play for fellow students, so will smile, be positive and think about the beauty of the pieces. We are all in various learning stages, and non critical. Wonderful video, Greg.

I found out that the more I practice, the better I play. It really is that simple for me! Also, if you combine your memory with a harmonic understanding of the music, you are always in control. I love playing live and usually play much better than in the practice room, you are in charge of the flame.

Great video and great pieces of advice ! I believe I just lost stage fright by performing a lot in other fields than piano: dance (including lot of improvisations), acting, but also in music with improvisations (solo and groups, 100% musician or mixte with dance or something else). I believe it was also because I was just not fearing any failure at all, I was 100% focused on the dramatic, emotional, aesthetic of the moment. So emotional preparation is/was a game changer for me. One of my acting coaches said "you will be judged, it won't change anything about your performance". Horowitz and his wife Wanda also said something similar during the 23e Mozart concerto recording, answering to Horowitz's "did they like ?" they said: "it won't change anything". Horowitz also said thet he is two different men, and the one on stage is "king". Greg, describing your experience and your tools, your attitude, your little meditation before playing is priceless. Many thanks ! However, now, since about 1 year, I have a different attitude with the piano, I'm recording everyday, I have much "bigger" and numerous pieces, I should have also a much bigger emotional preparation for the pieces, and I have no idea what will happen when I will play in public. Mystery.

Fascinating, Greg. Playing a sport for your country in an International Match has the same problems so it was doubly interesting to hear what you had to say. I would add, as has at least one of your commenters, the need to concentrate - and the need to be able to shrug off distractions, and also that 'inner voice' which might make itself heard in your mind if you make a mistake: itself a sign of lack of concentration. I'm glad you addressed the question of 'wrong notes. Thank you!

Sometimes you're in a group, playing electric bass and rockin'. You can forget about the listeners or audience. You just play like you rehearsed in the bedroom. Playing piano alone, no one else there to hide behind. That's different.

@gregniemczuk
@gregniemczuk Жыл бұрын

I wiele innych… Co sobie w takich sytuacjach pomyśleć? …

I shall think about your ideas, and many thanks for them. Last time I tried to play a piece I had prepared very well, not an easy piece but one I had conquered, I played to a group who meet up every 2 months, it went very well. Two weeks later I tried to play it to a different group of friends and a few acquaintances in the evening. I was tired from other mental exertions that day, and had not been able to play on any piano for most of the day or warm up, and it was a disaster. I am not sure, but I think tiredness was a big factor... and I do struggle to play "cold".

A Chopin ponoć nie lubił dawać koncertów i występować przed tłumem. Może grał tych koncertów za mało? Może to kwestia przyzwyczajenia, bo ileż można się denerwować jeśli te koncerty to codzienność.
