My theory is that Conor just jumped on the opportunity to "avenge" Artem as a pretext for the bus incident, but the main motivation was to provoke Khabib into a fight, while generating a lot of hype in the process. This created a compelling story of bitter rivalry, making it possible to promote the fight as more than a sporting event. That goal was achieved spectacularly, creating a ton of press coverage and the highest grossing PPV event. This is why I also think that while Dana seemed very upset after Khabib's outburst at the end of the fight, I'm sure he would use the footage in the promotional materials had the rematch taken place. I bet he was already salivating at the thought during the post fight presser.
