Crazy. I just watched again on Fight Pass. Nunes took round one, Valentina unquestionably took rounds 2 3 and 4. I'd personally give her 5 as well. I don't understand how they can say it was even close. I guess they count every kick that Valentina blocked as a hit which is kind of ridiculous, as well as every one of Nunes little calf taps to Valentina and kicks where her toes barely graze Valentina's body. Valentina was far more accurate, landing direct punches and kicks as well as truly impressive counters and dodges. She was also quick to knees to the body at nearly every clinch. Nunes meanwhile was putting Valentina's eyes at risk every round jutting her fingers with long nails outwards nonstop. The only thing you might say is Valetina's counter-striking style can appear like she on the run with Nunes always putting on the forward pressure, which makes you appear like the dominant fighter. Even with Nunes takedown in the last round, Valentina landed way more total strikes. But if you give Nunes round 5, that's only 2 rounds out of 5.

It was a true mma fight. Two of the best in the division went toe to toe, that are master's in their own technical strategies. Who have respect for each other's strengths, while they where looking for weaknesses during the fight... Honestly, both fighters have validity on why they won the bout.

I think the the new unified rules of MMA somehow has affected the judges, it seems like a takedown is MASSIVE in the scorecard but if you fail the takedown your opponent gets that point. Derek Brunson v Anderson Silva is a good example of this

I think a reasonable person could see how either fighter could have been given the decision. Valentina herself only thinks she won 3 rounds, so if the judges disagreed with her on only one round then she lost. My assessment is that Amanda clearly won rounds 1 and 5, while Valentina won round 4, so the debate is who won rounds 2 and 3. Valentina, I thought was too defensive and although she has quicker hands, she was only waiting to counter, problem is Amanda knew it, so Amanda was the aggressor but she was using low kicks and kicks to the abdomen, making it difficult for Valentina to counter and limited her scoring opportunities. Because Amanda was the aggressor and the judges are suppose to award the aggressor, since they are bringing the fight, that's was the key reason Amanda won. You can play it safe like Valentina, be defensive and only plan to score by countering the whole night, but don't be surprise when you lose, since the only fighter I've seen to have success with that strategy in title fights is Mayweather, but unfortunately Valentina is not Mayweather. Lastly, I suspect Valentina was gun shy after feeling Amanda power in the first fight, since that's the only reason I can think of that would cause her not to let her hands go, when her hands are clearly quicker that Amanda's.

From what I could see. Valentina landed way more punches even if they did not engage that much. Valentina clearly won more rounds. Amanda definitely had more octagon control. Amanda was effective landing her some kicks to Valentina's lead leg even if it did not really seem to do much if not any damage to Valentina. Amanda's punches were missing very frequently. Now fast forward to the 5th round. In the last couple of minutes. Valentina tries a hip throw but when they landed, it was Amanda that ended up on her back. I have no clue personally I think it should be counted as a takedown for Valentina. Amanda was given a great position and decided to lay on Valentina's back and do NOTHING. Then they get back up and Amanda clearly gets one takedown. But Valentina landed more punches from the bottom, while Amanda just kept the position.

They have to decide if having top control and not making anything from it, versus being taken down and landing good solid strikes. Kind of ask the question of who has the control, how utilised the takedown, I think that the only reason nunes won was because of the takedowns, and I think the scorecard gives too much credit to a takedown, and they don't regard who makes more use of it. If shev made more of the takedown, you surely have to give the points of the takedown to her.

The fight could have went either way 48-47. I had Valentina winning the fight 48-47 but I understood the third could have went either way and Nunes could get the nod 48-47. What's disappointing is that Valentina is clearly more skilled and was outstriking her 15-9 in the 5th before she tries a headlock during a scramble and gets taken down. Terrible mistake. If she doesn't do that she probably wins the the last round and wins via unanimous decision. Makes that mistake and loses by a single point.

it was close enough that there needs to be a rematch. i think valentina improved more than nunes did since the first fight, the skill gap was a bit shorter this time around.valentina was harder to take down this time and she did better at tying up nunes on the ground so she couldnt posture up and land the real hard shots. that first fight nunes took her down with almost zero resistance and at will, controlled the posture and battered her on the ground.

I don't agree the decision at all. It wasn't a great performance by either fighter, but relative to their other fights, Nunes performed way worse than expected. I don't think she landed more the one right hand the entire night, and why given her BJJ did she not go for more takedowns? Rewarding a fighter for just aggression is wrong, and it's even worse to reward them for takedowns that they do nothing with, especially when they are getting out landed from the fighter on the bottom. A fighter shouldn't be punished for having a counter-punching style, and even though Shevchenko didn't land much, she did counterpunch effectively at times. Nunes did little more than land some teeps and occasionally some leg kicks.

She didn't land any takedowns and Amanda did. She walked backwards 99% of the time. Not saying you can't win fights going backwards but you have to make something impressive happen. The counter puncher is going to land shots for sure because it is easier to counter than to attack. The fight was close but she lost the fight pretty clearly. If you were a fan of her then I could see how you would see it as a win but reality says no.

I don't hold sympathies for any of the two, i actually had money on valentina, however it was obvious to anyone with at least half a brain that Amanda won. Better control, more relevant shots + the two takedowns. Valentina did not threaten her with pretty much anything. Stop crying people.

If you want to be the champion, you have to take it from the champion. If you leave it up to the judges , then you leave it out of your hands. It is the champions belt. You have to seriously overwhelm the champion to show the judges that you should be the champion.

Valentina clearly showed nothing. Amanda clearly showed nothing. If you want domination through technique go down a division for Joanna. If you are looking for domination through ferocity go up one for Cyborg. These two displayed a low-volume, hesitant, bore-fest of a fight where neither were willing to commit to anything but study each other and save their gas tanks for a possible 12th round.

No robbery here .. just a razor close decision .. Valentina has to know you have to take the title from the Champion .. way to much posing in this fight ! I scored it 1st two rounds Amanda second two rounds for Valentina and the 5th to Amanda with the takedown late . 48-47

i had it 2,3,4 and 5 for valentina. the takedown didnt do any damage compared to the strikes valentina landed in the 5th. all amanda did in the 5th was the takedown, thats it.

I am a Shevchenko fight fan but I do not agree with her on this fight . It was an OK fight but not that engaging. About 80-90% of the fight was feints. Shevchenko did not engage enough to seal a victory...split decision-fair call.I enjoy a strategic fight as well but with much , much more engagement. Chess is chess....this is the fight game and people want to see a fight. Moras over Evans-Smith , Glenn over Tucker , Dos Anjos over Magny , Cejudo over Reis.....these were all decisive victories. Nunes/Shevchonko was not decisive and not that engaging.
