Wood choice is what some folks consider as quality however the quality of workmanship is the true measure of value and beauty .Thanks for the video

Back in the late 70's and 80's i made a lot of things from the almighty yellow pine. We worried a lot about it. Twisting was the major thing. Followed by cupping. You over come and adapted. 😊 Today there is so much to help you overcome that. That and a little bit of woodworking knowledge and of course the almighty. The all knowing KZbin. 😂 Your piece is fabulous.

I personally can't say that I love pine, but I don't hate it either. Making furniture from pine wood seems to be a valid option, especially for beginners, and for anyone who does not have sufficient financial means to use high-quality hardwoods. Thank you for sharing this video, keep up the good work

You definitely showed you can make quality pieces using pine lumber, that table is amazing! To me, if you treat pine like you do reclaimed wood and mill in properly and keep in mind you are working with soft, wetter than we like wood you can make some very nice furniture. Also, what is classified as "high quality" is going be different for every client but in the end if what you provide them exceeds their expectations then it is high quality. Great videos, enjoy your channel a lot!

Absolutely nothing wrong with pine and used in the right way can look great, especially for painted projects.

Looks amazing! But I would never want my dining table made out of pine. My kids would destroy it in no time. But I could see making some other pine furniture that sees less wear & tear like a side board, etc.

Great video and I like the details you put into that table despite the pine wood. The one thing that was shocking was how you have all of the expensive festool, put all the details into the project, and then didn't use a professional finish like Wax, Lacquer, or Conversion Varnish.

Norm Abram had projects made from pine. Some were made as copies (or near copies) of Shaker furniture. Shaker's used what ever was available. As far as pine will make fine furniture or not, just look at that final picture says "YES".

I'd rather have solid pine furniture than a cheap mdf model. I've made several end tables and accent tables out of pine. It is less expensive than hardwood and is a great way to hone woodworking skills.

I actually really appreciate the comment on pine being the first species of tree. I like to have extra connection with the earth wherever I can and knowing this now makes my pine projects extra special. You make this look way too easy. Great video!!

You can definitely make a high quality piece of furniture if you are as skilled as you are. Myself on the other hand as a beginner, I wouldn't trust to know all the tricks of the trade 😂

What if I make a skirt out of 2x4s underneath and fasten the tabletop to it with screws? Would that prevent the top from bowing and warping? I don’t have any of the tools that you do to implement your solution. Trying to do this on a budget.
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 Ай бұрын
It would prevent warping, but it will also prevent expansion and contraction across the grain, which would most likely lead to cracking within the top. You might look into using expansion brackets, which are easier to attach than z-clips 👍🏻

I know this video is a year old at this point, but I’ll throw my 2 cents in anyway lol. I personally don’t like building furniture with pine, but with the economy the way it is currently, it’s about all most people can afford, at least locally. Plus farmhouse is still big around here, so that contributes some as well. It’s definitely better than gremlin wood, aka mdf lol.

Did you consider getting 2x12s instead, to help reduce the number of knots?
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 Жыл бұрын
Yes, 2x12s (yellow southern pine) don’t take stain as well as whitewood pine (2x6) in my opinion, and I also wanted the top to match the legs as close as possible 👍🏻

Did you let the wood dry out? Any idea what moisture % the wood was at?
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 6 ай бұрын
If I recall correctly, I think I let the 2x6s sit in my shop for a couple weeks. No idea what the % was, but I usually just assume it’s dry. As long as you can keep it flat (this is why I used the dovetail braces) the expansion and contraction across the top isn’t a structural concern 👍🏻

Why not turn your own legs so you can use whatever species of wood you want for the top and legs?
