Thanks for posting. I am looking to set up a hotspot for a friend and the info you shared was what I needed. I am running a DVMega currently. 73.

My OLed display shows "Close" when I apply new settings and "Startup" as it starts again. The rest of the time it is just blank. Is there a way to enable messages please. You also mention flipping the display so it is up the right way when the Jumbo is sitting on its side - how to do this please. Thanks

Glenn, I am new to DMR, and don't yet have a hotspot, however, in the background you have one other hotspot running. Possibly a second one as well. When I got my DMR ID, I saw some instructions that say to add a number (2 digits) to your DMR ID to make them different from each other. From RadioID.net, "If you own more then one hotspot, use your personal ID number and add a 2 digit suffix, example: Radio ID 3020111, use 302011101, 302011102, ect." They also suggest putting multiple hotspots within RF range of each other on seperate frequencies. Maybe that would explain some of the problems??? Just some thoughts. My thanks to you for the video. I have a lot to learn, but this is all very interesting. --Mark, KE6BB

How did you get it to work without putting in your Wi-Fi information??
@TomSP9TL4 жыл бұрын
Have you tried to power the second hotspot from the other one? They both have two microUSB ports. I have connected a GoPro camera to the 2nd port to see what happens. And it charges my camera. So I guess, the second microUSB port might be used to power a second hotspot. So you may only need one USB cable from the mains/PC's USB port.
@vk4nga4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do that, you'll probably fry the raspberry pi zero board. The second port is a data port.
@TomSP9TL4 жыл бұрын
@@vk4nga I've used either ports for powering up my hotspot. Nothing happened to it. The ports are not even labelled, which one is for data and which for power supply.
@vk4nga4 жыл бұрын
The ports are labelled on the PCB. You can use either for power no problem. While the input power is 5 volt the pi actually runs on 3 volts via a regulator. The issue with pulling power to charge a battery is you could simply overload the 5 volt circuit and damage it. I've measured the current draw of these hotspots and it's around 170-190 ma. Charging a battery could run as high as the maximum output of the psu so potentially placing a huge load on the pi. Look up the specs and decide for yourself.

Good afternoon, Great overview. I appreciate it. I'm new to this. I bought one of these and can't login. The person I purchased it from said the username is TZB with a password of a bunch of numbers. I am awaiting an email on how to log in. Any ideas if that won't work?

Hi Glenn, thanks for the informative video. I think I may have bought one from the same Ebay seller. I have taken your advice and imaged a San-disk SD card with the current Pi-Star OS. I won't know until next week when the hotspot arrives as to the version on the supplied card. 73, Ian, VK2ZCD.

Hi Ian, it will most likely have older firmware too, so update that as well. Cheers Glenn.

@@vk4nga Thanks for the info; I am sure my SD card has failed and my Pi no longer boots. I have been on to the Pi-Star website today and I see they have released a pi-Zero image which was not available before. In any case I have to wait for a new SD card to arrive before I can try again.

Good video Glenn, love the claim its QSO ready ... Hi Hi .. Re the BM Master, I have been using BM_Malaysia as the master for some weeks now (has low latency too) due to the same issue you had where the AU master was just not responding. The AU master has given issues too many times for me so I simply stay on the 5021 these days. Keep the videos coming.. 73 de Nigel VK3GY

Thanks very much for the informative video. Based on what you've shown here, and noting you have more videos for me to watch, I'm going to have a go at getting one and having a play. I didn't quite understand the whole concept and thought it would be beyond me but you've given me the confidence to have a go. Thanks.

We are seeing the end of Ham radio, using a wire ( internet ) as a means of communication is the opposite to what wireless is, and we the ham community are to blame for the slow death of our hobby. Make no mistake we are not against digital modes, we are against using wires as communication in the ham radio world.

So move into the next direction and make your own data network for ham radio that doesn't rely on the internet..

I see DMR as a fix for the dying VHF/UHF bands. (not HAM radio in a whole) Analogue VHF/UHF repeaters have been dead for well over a decade. No one talks on analogue repeaters anymore, not because of DMR, but because people shifted to the internet /computers and forgot about radio. DMR has breathed fresh air into radio, especially for those who cannot setup outdoor aerials due to living conditions. Existing analogue repeaters can easily offer DMR whilst providing analogue without having to make drastic changes.
@che59v3 жыл бұрын
@@TheUniversalEyes A Strange fix, for a "dying VHF/UHF Analogue repeaters, and this " fix" is: use the internet as the way to communicate wirelessly? yes, most DMR users still claim the hobby wireless while using the wired internet to make this claim, how ironic. This is a sure way to losing our spectrum allocation, DMR ( internet driven ) is not any different from using a mobile phone data plan and achieving the same ( or even better ) after all, the modern cell phone is wireless as well as using the same internet. This excuse of " we can not set an antenna " is lame and misleading, take it from someone who played ham radio ( H.F, VHF, and UHF ) from every hotel I have been to around the world, as for H.F, have you heard about the small loop antenna? works great from any veranda, same goes for 1/4 wave from 2m and 70cm. Since when we ham became so lazy? since when we forgot what wireless is? till when will we come with ideas that will bring this hobby to a sad end ?.
@TheUniversalEyes3 жыл бұрын
@@che59v Repeaters have been using linked systems long before the internet. It doesn't matter if it's through the internet or through a wireless link, it's the same thing. I personally talk on an actual repeater system, which covers several hundred miles. The only thing linked is the statewide system. So basically what you are saying is because a ham isn't on the hf bands, but rather talking on a handy talkie connecting to a link, they are killing the hobby. That's not so, because of DMR and other digital modes, more people are picking up the hobby again now than they did 20 years ago. (Online sellers can't even keep up with the demand of radio sales right now) Also, It doesn't matter if you are using an HT to link up with with a box 2 feet away or 50 miles away, you still have to transmit on the amateur radio spectrum. Having an antenna farm doesn't make you a better ham either, nor does owning an HF radio. Both HF and VHF/UHF have their own place in the world. Both different, but they come together in the end. The only thing that will kill this hobby is not having the ability to make a radio. If you want to talk about ham radio, a lot of old timers frowned on hams that bought their radio and didn't make it themselves. (AKA Appliance operators). Nowadays just about everyone thinks they are the BIGGEST and BEST ham because they spent more money on their radio, Microphone and Antennas. The people who are having the most fun right now are the ones who spent 90 dollars on an HT. The ones that are crying right now are the ones who spent 10,000+ dollars on radios and antennas and have no one to talk to on the hf bands.
@josebrivera17164 жыл бұрын
You talk too slow. And you are opening the case the wrong way. All you need do to open the case is slightly pull at the points where the one part of the box inserts into the other part. You wasted effort by trying to it apart from the middle. It’s a miracle you got it opened!
