Nice job, I'm currently struggling with a KP 1/72 MiG 17 PF, I decided to scratch build air ducting for the nose air intakes. It's a battle but I'm determined to do it.
@MMScaleModels Жыл бұрын
That's quite the task, have you decided where to put the nose weights?
@johnorlitta Жыл бұрын
I'm planning on using flattened lead split shot. I should be able to conform it to the shape of the fuselage and glue it inside over the nose gear.

That is beautiful workmanship on your behalf. While I also think that almost no kit is unbuildable, however, there are some that require a huge amount of work, including moulding you own parts. I have had canopies that did not fit or left gaps and so I had to make my own canopies. A 1970’s Airfix Cutty Sark kit had up to 3mm gaps in the hull joints, and deck to hull joint. Some parts were the wrong size. For instance the superstructure for mounting the whale boats was too wide for the deck and had to have a couple of mil cut out of it. You have to wonder if they ever did a test build of the kit. Yet I have had some people say that they had no problems with the same kit. I have no idea why. Were they different moulds? On the Airfix HMS Victory the stern cabin windows do not line up with the gun decks, and then there are the fit issues with the deck and hull. Having seen these issues I am sure there are kits out there that are beyond saving, but they are probably only antique kits. I am no longer going to do any older kits, they are just not worth the effort.

Thanks mate! I can imagine how frustrating it is. I myself have a airfix kit recently repacked with nice box art and a nasty surprise in it... dating back in the 60s

@@MMScaleModels it is obvious that everyone speaks for their own personal opinion, but in my experience of about 40 years of building kits this is a more than decent model, have you ever seen the smer kits or the old zvezda kits or the ancient frog kits sold in sachets ? I built those too 😅

Did you apply gloss varnish before putting decals? Or it isn't necessary due to the metal coat finish?

Yes, I did. However the sealant I am using is no longer in production. Stronger decal solutions may affect raw metalizer.

incredible, is there no problem with applying an enamel panel wash over the lacquer metallic coat? i was told at my local store that any weathering should be applied with products of a different base than the previous costs (for example if the main coats are acrylic, weathering should be enamel, and viceversa). i’m not too clear yet on how lacquer can interact with other types of paints and varnishes, which i learned also must be based on the same solvent as the paint you’re applying it on, so acrylic or water based paint coats have to be sealed with an acrylic or water based varnish. i’m having a blast getting into the hobby but this part is very confusing lol
@MMScaleModels Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I sealed the metalizer paints. However the sealant is also lacquer. Different products react differently. You have to try. Generally lacquer paints are resistant to enamel... to some extent.
