Winter bushcraft kit
The US (Modular Sleep System) made by Tennier Industries was devised by the US army as part of its military equipment systems for ground forces. Developed and made by Tennier Industries Inc. Each sleeping bag can be used separately or in combination, when both sleeping bags are combined there is a claimed temperature rating of -20C. All of the components snap together to prevent sliding around. This is an original piece of US military kit. Used grade 1 condition.

I was in the infantry when they first introduced these. I still have mine, all these years later. I ditched the bags, I use Wiggy's bags now (lighter and warmer). The MSS system was revolutionary when it came out. Being infantry, we never set up tents-sometimes, temp shelter with ponchos, but that was it. This system, you simply flopped it on the ground, crawled in, and slept. I woke up many, many nights in the rain, sleet, snow-and was fine. The one complaint I did have, and why I switched bags, was the conduction from the snaps. Here, it gets COLD in the winter. The snaps conducted the cold from the outside, right to you on the inside. It may seem insignificant looking at it, but I can tell you, it drops the temp of the bag about 15 degrees F. Not good when its below zero. With the Wiggys bags, there are no snaps, so its not an issue. Enjoy!! My favorite camo too. We call it "God's plaid" :)

I'm kind of lucky. I have a brand new, never been used patrol and intermediate sleeping bag. A bivy that's been used once. A new poncho, and a liner that looks new. I also have an A+ Dutch Hooped Bivy. I'm in surplus heaven.

During my time in the US Army, this is probably one of the best pieces of issued kit along with the rest of the sleep system. As soon as my contract was up, I made sure to contact some old quartermaster friends for a bivvy bag for personal use. The one I currently have is old gen like the one shown in the vid here, but I have hiked and slept in that bivvy through blizzards and torrential downpours, while remaining almost entirely dry. I cannot say enough how essential this piece of kit is in my outdoor pursuits.

Thanks for the videos...just got mine and did my first run with it for a winter camp...got down to 3 degrees F at night. Threw my sleeping bag inside and was quite comfortable. I was leery of being too constricted but all in all I was very surprised at the room I had. I am 5'11' and about 195 with 20lbs of that being good Scotch Macrae hair😁. Highly recommend. Mcguire army and navy is a good source as well. Mine had a 2" tear in it and instead of having me send it back they just told me to keep it and refunded all of my money.

I believe there is an x long bag but not many. Love this bag as I am a side sleeper and the next gen bivy is a mummy bag which is too narrow for most side sleepers. Extra room in the boot box for GI's to keep their boots on while they sleep. Congratulations!!!

Hi Wooly super that you have a complete set now. .I have 2 sets but without the bivy...I'm using the Dutch m90 with a zipper (they come with no zipper) or UK bivy.. still hoping to the US bivy for cheap..I currently bought a US woodland goretex rain jacket...love it! ...greetings from the Netherlands

I love my woodland MSS bivy! Actually, I have two and each of my older children have the ACU version. The ACU version is quit a bit lighter than the woodland and packs down smaller. I don't think the woodland bivy is lighter than my Canadian bivys, which are comparable to the British (from what I can tell) except my newer one actually has a waterproof zipper added. The heaviest bivy I have is my Carinthia made Belgian army hooped bivy, which is identical to the Dutch but in the fun loving Belgian camo. That was a rare catch!

I know this is later, but were I to choose, I would likely go with the newer USMC one. Simply because it has the netting and hoop to pull it off your face. Many of us that were issued these original bags, sewed a loop of 550 cord into the front lip of the hood, so we could suspend it off our faces when sleeping.
