I am amazed watching this. This is a huge job, and way beyond my level of expertise. I think I would have welded the seam and convinced myself I never had a sunroof, lol

Hello MMWA. You've got yourself a new subscriber. But I am in quite a pickle because my sunroof's electromotor is cranking, but the roof won't budge. Do I need to take the whole headliner apart like you did or can i bypass that and somehow access the sunroof mechanism?
@MMWA-DAVE6 жыл бұрын
From what I understand there is a plastic gear that breaks in the motor unit in the rear left of the car if the sunroof is jammed up or too difficult to move. I suspect this will be your problem. Given that its not operational at all i would start by checking out the motor unit itself, once you can get the lid to move i'd inspect it for damage clean and lubricate it. Genuine mb parts to rebuild the sunroof are VERY expensive, there are after market kits on ebay for way cheaper though. Thats what I will be using.

I have major issue with my headliner because it is sagging and torn. What advice do you have for me regarding replacement?
@MMWA-DAVE4 жыл бұрын
Rave Service is it the facelift version which is stuck to moulded frame or is it the early fabric style suspended with metal rods and clips? The early style i’d say just get another one from a donor car and fit it. If the facelift type i would remove the mould and have it retrimmed by a professional- it will look brand new again.

@@MMWA-DAVE I know mine is a facelift W124, 1995 E320. I can do headliner work myself, but that whole sunroof thing has me scared.
@MMWA-DAVE4 жыл бұрын
Faith Godwinked you don’t have to drop sunroof cassette to replace headliner. And the trim for the sunroof lid itself is easy to remove
@Sean-lp6px4 жыл бұрын
@@MMWA-DAVE Which of your videos would be a good guide?
@MMWA-DAVE4 жыл бұрын
@@Sean-lp6px I never made a video showing headlining removal - its quite straight forward but labor intensive in that you just remove everything around it and in it to drop it. For the trim on the sunroof you just open the lid and pull the front edge down to release the clips and pull it out from the top. You do have to make sure the shoes that slot into it stay in the correct orentation when it comes to sliding it back in though.

Hi, nice work. Are you not afraid of not getting it, head liner and sunrood, back in later?
@MMWA-DAVE6 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid of a lot of things, but unfortunately it had to come out for the paint job as there is surface rust around the opening and i wanted to make sure it did not extend inside. No one in their right mind would be doing this to a car like this that will never be worth anything, it should of been scrapped. My reasons are simple, cool previous owner and sequential order number to my existing w124.

@Bizcar Pro here in australia our old domestic junk that handles like farming machinery is appreciated more than euro cars. Only 2 door models generally have some resale and hero models such as the 6.9, 6.3 and 500e for example. my lowly 300e-24’s will never be worth much to sell. but they are priceless to me 😃

@Bizcar Pro heh, I think I may be responsible for more people than I realise being motivated to spend time and money on their 124’s of all variants 😀

@Bizcar Pro 3000€ for a good 300E? Not in the best of shape probably and with a lot of rust, having driven in Belgium.

@Bizcar Pro ok😊. Driving a E300 diesel estate myself in Belgium. About 400000 km and still passing every annual inspection so far.

@@MMWA-DAVE ah, I just now looked at your other videos and that would have answered my question. You're a brave man to have the car down to just a shell like that.

Another question, do you think that in order to replace the sunroof tube the whole sunroof casing has to be removed? I can see the two bolts you threaded back in ad to not lose the bolts. Can the back window stay in while the tube is changed out? I have my car all apart now and I’m getting frustrated with it. I have a friends car and my cable pushes through his sunroof tube just fine. But in my car is gets bound up and I have to push so hard that the sheathing is getting nicked where it first enters the tube because you can’t push that hard on the cable with two hands without it flexing at the tube opening.

@MMWA-DAVE2 жыл бұрын
so would i. They are a novelty item which personally I used to be excited about but I literally never use it now on either car. They are a pain in the but when they go wrong too. They were however standard on Australian spec cars so finding one without one is near impossible.
@jimmicrackhead122 жыл бұрын
@@MMWA-DAVE oh they are standard? I brought a 300e a few weeks ago, haven't even tried the sunroof yet. Couldnt see how to open it as only spent a short time with it before going back out to work. Thanks for your efforts 👍
