I went to a job fair today. Job fairs are not like this anymore. You go up to a booth, they just tell you about their company, give you some flyers, and tell you to apply online. No one even read my resume. It was completely pointless. Also I was the only one there wearing a dress shirt and dress pants. Everyone else was just wearing regular street clothes.

I think someone should start a job search site to where if someone is looking for a job, they know if or when their resume was seen, if the position got filled so one doesn't have to sit back and wonder themselves to death, and over all just have RESPECT for the ones that are out looking for a job and keep each one informed as to their submission of resume. It is a total unprofessional lack of respect out there today with job searching. Everyone wants respect, so why can't we all?

Mostly recruiters are this way. They are trained to basically act like hawks. They notice subtle differences how one applicant may stand out (positively or negatively) from another. For example, in the video, there was a girl chewing gum. I noticed that right off the bat. They key is to know that each movement is likely being criticized in great detail. Goal is to maintain composure, be tactful & courteous, and (most critical) be professional.

I never understood the dress to impress like having to dress up slacks and button shirt or tie etc. I get it dress nice but why does it have to be suit and tie??? 🤔 what if someone cannot afford a suit and tie?? Some of the best people I hired on my staff came dressed to the interview in a really nice pair of jeans and a nice polo shirt looking clean cut and everything. They communicated well, made eye contact had some really good questions to ask as well. I never understood the concept of showing YOU NEED to show up in suit and tie 🤔 I know people who go to interviews all dressed out and get hired yet quit a week later or become not very good employees 🤔 🤷♂️ really wish more companies would change that rule. There are some amazing people out there that might not be able to afford a suit and tie but they still come dressed nicely and become some of the best employees you hire. I get it if someone shows up in shorts flips flops or something like that I can you not hiring them but if they have a really nice pair of jeans, dressed neatly with a nice polo shirt and have a fresh clean cut looking presentable, shouldn’t that be enough? 🤔 just my opinion and speaking from experience.

What I got from the invitation I cannot really prepare for the job fair because there is no any list on the invitation letter to specify what companies may visit it. I only could give my resume, dress regular, and introduce myself hopefully a way they may find it symphatetic. The only real reason to visit these is probably the option to get connections or just get into a database to be available when they feel you needed.

Meagen Shields I totally agree. I think for this type of thing, even though these company representatives say something different, dressing business casual but still presenting yourself professionally as far as your approach, your introduction, your body language, should be fine. I think dressing down just a bit should make one stand out more, show that one is comfortable in one's own skin, and one has total confidence in one's skills, abilities and qualifications and therefore feels no need to overdress.

I know this video and comments are extremely old but did any of you learn anything about the importance of going to job fairs at school? Yes you can apply for basically any position online but then you're just another name on one of 1000 resumes they'll receive. The chances are high that the person you INTERACT with at a job fair will be closely related or directly involved in the hiring process and if you TALK to them and leave a positive impression they will immediately put your resume on the top, even if you aren't the most qualified applicant. The fact that you go and make an effort is what these companies look for and if you'd rather just "apply online" than go and talk to someone then you aren't ready for the job
@joang.66644 жыл бұрын
Great advice, and very encouraging, thank you so much.. I am going to few career fairs soon exactly because i prefer not to waste time applying online(people do not realise that 98% of the online applications get tossed out by ATS) but to interact in person.. the immature comments amaze me. Someone said they were going to job fair but they only had jeans. That speaks to the videos comment about a lack of preparation. Go to the thrift store. Ask a friend to borrow clothing. Quit making excuses for your own lack of preparation. Those who make fun of the Target employee, guess what it's a corporation with corporate jobs. You can make good money in a corporate environment IF you have a work ethic and smarts. If corporate isn't' for you, that's fine but don't bash it. A Job Fair tthat won't publish a day or two ahead of time who's attending probably isn't the kind you want to attend for career level jobs. But you can still prepare before interacting with the exhibitors. Show up early and check out who's there then go take your phone and do some quick searches before going back to interact. And yes, some of them won't interact more than superficially with you if you don't initiate a conversation that shows you're well prepared to interact. You have the power to drive the conversation. Sometimes they've been assigned at the last minute to fill in for someone, but you can still make a good impression. Ask them what their experience was , what brought them to the company, etc. Quit making dumb excuses!

Every year, US colleges willingly accept international students. Specifically considering India, lakhs of students join the US universities for undergrad or graduation studies. Considering these job fairs, Do the native US companies "equally willingly" offer jobs to international students? Of course, a proven academic record at the University is tantamount to getting a good job opportunity, which should ideally eliminate any discrimination. However, i'd like someone to very candidly answer the current scenario at these job fairs. Do they first prefer native US citizens, keeping aside international prospective students with equal talent and a proven academic track record?
