Andrew M - u can't blame Vela's goal on Beas. Sure he could have shown him outside and perhaps bought his mates a bit more time to get set, but showing him inside into 3 teammates isn't a terrible idea either. Two defenders went w Chicharrito, when one should have gone w him and one stepped to Vela. And by the way, that was a pretty amazing goal that not many players in the world can score. Put another way, if one of our guys scored that goal against Mexico, we wouldn't be sitting around talking about how Salcedo or whoever didn't defend it well enough...

I don't blame Beasley for that at all. Dude was inches from sliding underneath that and blocking the shot, while 3 USA players were in the center and none went after the ball when he cut inside. Guys in the past like Robben are famous for hte cuts inside from the touchline, Mahrez (LC) is someone in today's era good at cutting in from the wing and sometimes the key is the other defenders helping to converge on the ball. Nobody helped Beasley and the guy scored a tough goal that Guzan was nowhere close to. Good individual effort from him, bad help defense from the USA.

You can make the case that Acosta should have done everything possible to stop Chicharrito at midfield, but blaming Guzan I don't really think is fair either. That shot comes through traffic and could have gone to either side, so he's always going to be reacting late. Maybe a better keeper saves that, but if so, that's an INCREDIBLE save. Not routine at all.

I actually don't mind cause I really love Bobby Wood (has great energy/scores tough goals and never gives up on plays) but still seems strange Dempsey didn't even sub in or start over Arriola. Zachary Madden There's no animosity between Arena and Dempsey. There's also nothing strange about Dempsey not being used as a sub. Unfortunately, Dempsey did not show much against Venezuela and T&T. He wasn't in good form heading into the mexico game. Hopefully Dempsey comes back stronger and more determined for the September qualifying games.

I agree with you about what Dempsey has shown and I really didn't mind him not playing at all. However, going from an everyday no question starter for really the last decade, to not even a sub in a huge game against our biggest rival, still seems a bit strange to me.

My take: the T&T game was actually far more important in terms of qualifying for the WC. Dempsey started that game bc he is without question, the single greatest big game player in our team's history. Bruce knows this. Things didn't fall for Clint in that game, but he came v close at least twice. The reason he didn't play in the Mexico game was bc Bruce was optimizing that team to run run run for 90 minutes. With all due respect to Paul Arriola, I don't think anyone can say he should be starting big games for the nats. He started in this one bc he can run. A lot. I think Clint, and FabJo and all the other guys who didn't play against Mexico all knew, for weeks, that they were not in the plan. And again, it's rly hard to argue that Bruce's plan totally worked. Maybe it was a few inches away from being a v diff story (Hector Herrera's free kick), but it worked. Clint is a total pro. He'll be fine. Come next summer, he might not be starting, but I predict he comes off the bench and scores at least one big goal - think Miroslav Klose in 2014...

Do you understand how hard it is to take a point in Azteca? The US played great, especially with how improved Mexico has been in the last year. That was a great, much-needed result for the USA. I was proud of our guys, especially for Bradley who needs confidence after his last WC. Mexico is 20-5-2, in their last 27 matches home and away. One of the 2 losses was a friendly to Croatia in a game they dominated. They are a really tough team, and it's hard to even breath in Azteca. Arena has got them back in Qualifying, and are young players like Pulisic, Wood and others are only going to get better playing in these tough environments.
