In the history of the United States, nine presidents took the oath of office with little or no advance warning. Mo Rocca examines inaugurations without pomp but plenty of circumstance, such as the swearing-in of Calvin Coolidge in the tiny town of Plymouth Notch, Vt.

In a weird way, considering his reputation as "Silent Cal," it was fitting that Coolidge was sworn in under those circumstances, in his home town, virtually cut off from the outside world

They didn't tell it in the video but he did have a few secret service people there. That's who brought the message. Most likely from that same telephone in the store. But, the rest is very accurate. After taking the oath they all went back to bed. Then, cut the vacation short, he and his wife returned to Washington the next morning.

Coolidge is easily the most underrated president in American history.

mo thanks for your reporting. i love your reporting. and i love walter conkrite. he did the Kennedy assassination reporting in 1963. hed did the moon landing on the moon in 1969. the war in vietnam. he probably was the cbs ( columbia broadcasting system) like washington dc (district of columbia) wally anchored cbs news out of new york city. i wonder if the bellamy brothers used Walter in the song the baby boomer. i was a child born near mid point 1956 (1946-1964) i loved charles kuralt on the road segment. and i like steve hartman and his guest spots of his children. on the newer version of on the road. and acts about kindness and lessons for children and adults to make the world a better place. and the only america can be great again. it only happens when america gets better and the rest of the world thinks america is a global power worth looking toward for guidance. currently we have political leader that trip and fall from grace and fake news broadcasters like alex jones and others. good ole common sense is no longer that common. to much political foney baloney and alan jackson and i love bolagna.

One of my favourite stories about him was related to a White House function he attended, where one of the attendees said to him: "I bet you, Mr President, that I can get you to say more than two words over the course of this evening," His response displayed his dry wit: "You lose,"
