Moab Dual Sport - Hells Revenge

I was told to avoid Hells Revenge on the little XT250. Some said it didn't have the power to tackle a couple of the steeper climbs. Lies, all lies. The little goat was at home on this epic trail and though the ascents and descents were truly steep, and the side hill concerning at times, we did just fine and I can't wait to do this again next time in Moab.

You bet Marcos - 2024 for sure! I'll do my best to pull something together this coming rainy season...that's when I get most motivated it seems. We've had some great rides though right? EverRide / Death Valley / Moab - wow!

@@seansteede Did HRev. Death Valley is AWESOME! Also, out in Ouray- Telluride- lot's of good riding to. Did Moab 6 times- much more to see. Onion Creek, Shafer (plated), Long Canyon, Chicken Corners is great, etc.

@@UTAH100 My crew did one trip to Death Valley and like Moab, we only scratched the surface. I'll be honest, I'm so in love with Moab that I've not thought about going many other places since the last trip. Having said that - when it's burning hot in Moab - Ouray / Telluride maybe a more comfortable place to go! Will definitely keep it on the bucket list! Cheers.

@@seansteede Moab it tough to beat. You could spend a year there and not cross the same trail twice. Have you ever shot Kane Creek? Not the main stretch out to Hurrah Pass- about halfway, you make a hard LEFT into the creek area (~60 creek crossings.) It's fun, but challenging. We stumbled in there on a pair of rented KTM's on our first riding trip to Moab. It was some adventure! Mill Canyon area is a lot of fun too. The White Rim trail is cool too and very long, ~100 miles. You can camp up there too.

@@UTAH100 Yeah, I did about 1/2 Kane Creek on my Africa Twin in 2017 but turned around when things got a little too spicy for a 500lb bike and a guy with limited skill (me)! We didn’t get around to it on this trip but it was on the short list. I’ve seen it in films and admit some of the step ups intimidate me. I did Poison Spider on the Africa Twin and sprained my ankle seriously on it so have a bit of a “flinch” when it comes to rock step ups. Turned around on Porcupine Rim for the same reason and that’s the day we rode Hells Revenge instead….turned out great. Currently sitting at home nursing a Tib/Fib break from my last ride of 2023….so will be easing this old body back into things in the Spring, but if all goes well I’ll be in Moab fall 2024 again.

Fun times. Did this in a UTV twice. First time on my KTM we turned around- it was intimidating. Now it's a lot of fun. Low and slow!

I used to run my dogs on all of those trails in my '72 Baja bug. This is such a great trail.

An XT250 is my dream bike. Some people aspire for a KTM, or GS. I Started with a stupid adventure bike with terrible fragility, top heaviness and ridiculously road biased tires. I have a DR650 which is great for logging roads and pavement but the XT would let me explore with a lot less apprehension and more fun on Van island. I rode one 10 years ago on my beginner rider course and it was a blast around town and the twisty roads. I only want my DR650 and an XT250 in the garage now with the simple old school screw adjustable valves, snail chain adjustors, no cooling water and made in Japan build quality.

That’s great Michael - glad you enjoyed it. Moab is a special place and I’d recommend everyone to get down there at some point. There is something there for hikers, mountain bikers, dual sport riders, jeepers, overlanders - basically everyone!

Could this be too gnarly for an ADV bike?

I’m sure Pol Tarres could do it with ease but I would not recommend it. The majority of it would be no problem with a big ADV bike, but there are a few transitions / ledges and such that would pose quite a problem for the vast majority of riders. A T7 in the right hands might be ok, but a 1200GS no way!

Would you say Hell's Revenge is any harder than Fins and Things or Porcupine?

So that is a tough question. A few steeper and longer pitches, and slightly harder step ups than Fins & Things and more "threatening" sidehill - but skill wise I was say if you can do F&T then Hells Revenge should be no problem. We learned that many folks bail out on the final leg of HR and return via the parking lot which easier - you can see that in the video where we are questioning if we are on the right trail or not. We turned around on a big step up on Porcupine Rim and went back to do Hells Revenge so cannot comment on that ride. I'd like to try PR on my next trip. How would you compare Porcupine Rim to Fins & Things?

​@@seansteede PR has a couple of gnarly parts that are harder than F&T. Mostly bigger step ups and more technical sections. But it doesn't have as big of grades to ascend. So it depends on what you consider difficult/scary. So if you're a good single track rider, PR is not bad. But if you prefer to hit bigger ascents and have better views, then F&T is WAY better. My friends and I have gone to Sand Flats every year in October for the last 6 years now and we don't even ride PR anymore. It's just not as enjoyable. We hit 7-mile and all the other trails in Sand Flats.

@@aka_Locke Great to know - and agree with your comment "depends on what you consider difficult or scary". We learned that every part of our group has different concerns. I love sand - another guys HATES it....sounds like we made the right call by heading over to Hells Revenge. We did parts of 7 Mile to access M&M but will do the whole thing next time.
