Taxonomically whales and whale sharks are very different as whales are mammals and whale sharks are closer related to manta rays, which Moana's grandma embodied in the previous film. I also found out that whales (the humpback whale in particular) are associated with King Kamehameha who united the Hawaiian Islands.

The "whale" is a whale shark....except for the outer edge pattern on it, the spots on its topside are almost true-shape/pattern to real-world whale sharks.

Whale shark could be from the Māori legend of Paikea and Rata could be a huge abalone translated from Paua. These stories come from Aotearoa Nz. Not sure if other Polynesian have same stories
