Moana and The Hero's Journey - explaining using the hero's journey stages in movies

This is Golden!!! I was literally just watching Moana with my nephew and studying the heroes journey on my phone just for your video to pop up! Wow 🤩 🤯 This was sharply executed and the fact that you mentioned Maui’s journey that the viewer couldn’t see is rich!!!!!!!! I believe in the end, Maui saved Moana physically from Takaw. But Moana realized Takaw is Tafiti which I believe is a representation of Maui & Moana’s demons. Therefore, Moana saved her & Maui spiritually & restored balance by selflessness through the heart. Anyway, A+++++++++++++ !

Im so glad you liked the analysis. And yeah the fact Maui has his own journey going on didnt hit me until I really started to pull the story apart for this vid and thought it was so cool and clever. And you are right he certainly saved her physically but it was important for them at that moment that they did the things for each other not for their own selfish purposes. I think its why the movie resonates emotionally with so many folks.

The storm is The Belly of the Whale. It's not one of the trials as Moana do not gain anything from it, it's her final separation from the normal world. As Campbell says, "The hero, instead of conquering or conciliating the power of the threshold, is swallowed into the unknown and would appear to have died." Which exactly correlate with the events of the storm.
