I remember in middle school this one senior used to come from the highschool and play tunes with us. He'd call this "Bad Moanin" cause he said Mingus' one is the RIGHT one. I hope he can appreciate this video

Its really great to have grown up in a town near where these two teach, as my hs band has gotten to meet and perform in front of them on a few occasions. I even have acquaintances that have had the pleasure to be under their direction. So its super neat to see these musicians together on this channel getting the exposure they deserve

Dick Oatts was playing like this in Junior High. He blew everyone away when he played lead alto in the Jefferson, Iowa, high school jazz band, 1969-1971. I can hear Paul Desmond in his playing.

A great calmer version of Moanin versus the blast-off version of the original in the Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Benny Golson, and Jymie Merritt's magical, powerful version from the early 60s that lives on as one of the all-time masterpieces of Jazz. A great version of that...by these wonderful players!

@@DaDarkGuyhe’s asking whether Oatts was sharing a lead sheet with the trumpet player, transposed for Bb instruments, and transposing on the fly to his alto, an Eb instrument. Implying this may be why he messed up the head so badly.

As much as I love that tune and Emmet´s playing I feel that the Terell and Oatts did not nail it. KInd of lame and a little bit sloppy ensemble playing by the great Dick Oatts. Go to Art Blakey - Live at Bubba´s. Even (a young) Wynton plays it more lively on that record! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqWvlYWtg8tom5I Bobby Watson on alto!...man...
