Yeah, Chase is a major violator when it comes to his portrayal of African-Americans. I can't think of one redeeming quality of any of his characters as they are always somehow incompetent or morally corrupt. Even the half-black boyfriend of the daughter unceremoniously and selfishly kicks the daughter to the curb, which I found was out of character and perhaps to send a message to Italian girls about dating black men. Really, HBO is the same with "The Corner", "The Wire", etc. -- if you notice all the 'real' (meaning the problem-solvers and honorable people) heroes were white. What's up with that?!?

The movie's problems to me: 1. Introduced a ton of characters and went nowhere with them, even the main conflict 2. The movie was over the top obsessed with race and made Italians out to be as universally racist misogynistic assholes. Bronx Tale did it 100x better and didn't make it artificially take over the whole movie. I couldn't tell if the movie was about the italian or the black guy. 3. The main character kills his dad in plain sight and no one finds out right at the start...how is this believable?

I think people are missing the point. Dickie was compulsive. And arrogant. He killed his own father. Forsaking his own existence. Then kills his goomah(comare) and realizes his no father figure for Tony. Its the same coin two sides to it. Tony was absent of something from the get go(probably from seeing death and murder by his own father) he mentored chrissy but unlike dickie he didn't abandon him(tony) which ultimately leads chrissy down self destructive paths just like Tony. The movie is about moulding sociopathic personalities into machines of murder and personal gain Tony was no Saint He moulded chrissy into himself. But kills himself/chrissy Shit Tony Soprano is a loose reflection of John Gotti, instead of taking the family further into the future he ends it through all his needless clipping of people and being arrogant towards much bigger families than his own.

Yeah. How the hell is that a shot at Italian Americans overall? Ridiculous. The Sopranos had several episodes that openly examined, and actually mocked, the phenomenon of mob related people crying that mob movies were “anti-Italian”. If anything, it’s Michael trying to inappropriately appeal to “woke” sentiment, claiming some sort of discrimination where none exists. David Chase is Neapolitan himself, why would he want to slander Italians?

As a writer I think it's such a shame when a film or book is filled with shock factor in order to sell it to an audience. There's a difference between something shocking that makes sense to a narrative, and something thrown in for the heck of it
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 2 жыл бұрын
If you actually think about how Sopranos is presented as a show it makes perfect sense. They did that in the show all the time, but it got more spread out, so it wasn't as obvious, and Chase sometimes seemed frustrated when there were certain fans who weren't shocked by the violence. Now you've got to distill that initial intention down into one movie instead of like 13 episodes or several seasons. He overcompensated.

Actually a show like Roots was very historically inaccurate and a black guy wrote it, and he even said he was trying to create a mythology or legend for his people which ends up teaching people about history about as well as the movie 300 taught people about the Spartans. 300 was so over the top though verses Roots which pretended to be grounded in history as a historical drama. But unfortunately even with 300 it still effects how people view history and it definitely did that with Roots.

Biggest problems were: 1. Wayyyyy way too much involvement of the Newark Riots. It could’ve introduced the black crews obviously but spent too much time with it. 2. Needed Way way way more character involvement of the main core guys. Paulie, Silvio, Pussy, Junior and Tony (with Carmela, Artie, Charmaine) Just to make a few points for the sake of conversation. Dickie killing his dad correlates to the Moltisanti rage issues 30 years later in The Sopranos. Dickie according to Tony is a “Saint”, just like Livia, Tony’s mother describes her dead husband Johnny as a “Saint.” This prequel shows us they are scumbags indeed and we’re not saints. They were assholes actually. Then drowning the goomar, is a direct correlation to Christopher getting choked out himself by Tony. Johnny cussing out Livia in front of everyone about the blacks had to be vicious, to get the point across that the “Saints” in the title of the film is almost sarcastic or tongue in cheek. Same thing with Junior who turned out to be the biggest non-factor almost kinda pussy-ish. I agree with you about the black stuff. A lot of the points I made didn’t have to include the racial element, made zero sense.

I grew up in Newark in the neighborhood where this is supposed to take place and was born the day the riots started. I agree with most of your opinions about the film and respect your feelings as an Italian American that you were offended. However, from what my older siblings and family members have told me; there was a large conflict between the all the ethnic communities and the rioters. There were no riots in our neighborhood because Penn Station separates our Neighborhood from downtown. The men of our neighborhood stood on top of Penn Station with guns and Molotov cocktails in defense of their homes. They didn’t hide in a social club in shock like the movie portrays. However, in terms of your thoughts of interracial conflict between African Americans and Italians in Newark, you may want to look up Anthony Imperiale. You may change your opinion in this specific instance.

I was disappointed that James Gandolfini's son didn't get more screen time. He was the main reason I wanted to see the movie. I was hoping to see what Tony Soprano was like in his younger days. I seen Tony when he's older, and the boss of the family. I wanted to him as a kid, then as recruit, and him becoming a made guy. There were also some things that were kinda confusing. For example, Silvio, and Pussy. In the Sopranos Silvio is Tony's advisor, and Pussy is a captain. I always thought the two were the around the same age as Tony. In the show Tony, Pussy and Silvio talk about things did together as kids, and younger gangsters. So I thought they were part of Tony's crew. But in the movie Silvio, and Pussy are already a made guys, and both seem to be quite a bit older than Tony. There's seems to some continuity issues between the TV series and the movie.

I know this video is a year old but I just watched the film and I couldn't agree more with your assessment. There was so much promise in a film like this, a young Tony Soprano, played by Gandolfini's son, great actors like Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Leslie Odom Jr., and Corey Stoll, a historically rich time period to work with, and a wonderful cast of characters that the viewers would have loved to see in their younger days. David Chase missed the opportunity to give the fans what they wanted; a prequel about Tony's parents and his uncle Junior. Instead we got a messy retelling of a story that most Soprano's fans already knew, peppered in with some racism and unnecessary violence. I'm extremely disappointed and I hope that one day this movie gets the redemption it deserves.

you actually said a lot of the same things I said after I got done watching it. I was like, that was a mob movie... if a psychopath wrote it.The characters just didn't have any redeeming qualities like they did in the sopranos. It felt like having Richie Aprile or Ralphie as the main character. It puts the viewer in a weird place because you're generally supposed to relate to the main character and agree with them and their decisions to some level throughout the movie. If they wanted to show the reasons why Tony was so messed up later in life, this was a good idea and the characters he was surrounded by would definitely cause that. But it should be seen through the eyes of Tony, instead of having Tony as a side character. I think that would've made more sense to the viewer.

Racial tension was in the air throughout the country then, and mayors like Chicago's Richard Daley and or Newark's Anthony Imperiale were considered openly racist. Agreed! I initially thought that no matter how bad this movie was/is it couldn't put a stain on the Sopranos! The more I think about it tho the movie could've done just that. Not saying it did but it could've! Christopher's narration painted Tony in a worse picture than he already was. Then to find out that Junior had Dickie killed. That's just a Heartbreaker. Makes me look at Junior a little differently now. He was one of my favorite characters. That pettiness of having a guy killed cause u were jealous of his relationship with your nephew, the way Johnny Boy praised him for stepping up while he was in jail, and then he laughed at you for falling. We knew Junior had his petty ways but this was to petty being who he is!

Dude I’m gonna give you an education this ones for free the next time you gonna have to pay me. The term BPD was developed to describe women with NPD so as not to stigmatise them with a condition generally associated with men. It’s often thought that BPDs are vulnerable or covert which again is a misconception because NPDs are also covert. The defining pathology of NPD and for the hard of understanding “BPD” is the acquisition of control, fuel, residual benefits and character traits. Within NPD you have different types of Narcicist ranging from lower, middle lower, upper lower, lower midrange, middle midrange, upper midrange and then you have your upper narcissist and finally your ultra narcissist. Livia is a middle mid range unaware narcissist which is actually where BPD manifests itself in the middle midrange of the spectrum. So rather than explain all of this initially I’m gonna call her for what she is a woman with narcissistic personality disorder-so don’t come on here telling me to get it right. I think one of the major issues with Many Saints was that it wasn't a series, but a movie. Which meant that everything had to be compressed into that hour forty five timeframe. Rather than allowing the story to spread and play out over time. Which is what The Sopranos did well. There was shocking stuff, deaths, violence, but it was spaced. Many Saints has all of that crammed together one after another and it fails as a prequel for that reason.

I honestly don't know how you can definitively comment on The Sopranos if you haven't seen the entire thing. Parts of it do waver, he tends to rely more and more on the dreams and visions and nightmare sequences as the show goes on. Some people hated that, I personally didn't mind it especially in the context of where this is happening in the show. But no, you need to start with Episode 1 and watch them all in order to truly get the full experience.

Michael, I mean no disrespect and I'm not so much as defending this film but I think you misunderstood how the war between the Italians and Blacks happened in this film. The riot was caused by the cops beating a taxi driver and was rumored to be murdered. Harold, the rival gangster chose to pick a fight with the mob on his own because they were the only thing in his way to take over Newark. The movie didn't show the Mafia starting a fight with the Blacks, which I'm surprised since Dickie told the mob the Blacks killed his father in the middle of the riots. I honestly though that was what was going to start the fight but some reason it didn't happen like that. I'm also confused about your issue with the Italians having issues with the Blacks in the film since that was a big theme in Bronx Tale which you've expressed many times to be one of your favorite films (It's one my favorites as well). If you read this and decide to reply or anyone else does, just wanted to remind you that I'm not defending the film. I just don't think those issues you explained is what made this film fail. I think Chase wanted to do a story on a character that was related to the Sopranos and HBO went berserk and tried to create something else with it and cram it with fan service. There was too many things that didn't make sense.

Mr. Franzese- I watched the movie about six times. You are right-it was not good. I kept watching it because I kept hearing that Dickie had been such an integral part of who Tony Soprano was, I wanted to see what exactly what it was that he did. I see the Soprano characters slowly introduced; I get the mother-still a piece of work, but I never see what it was that Dickie was supposed to have done! In the Sopranos, great admiration for Uncle Dickie. Always telling Christopher- your dad was a great man! Where? How? I missed it somewhere. Were there metaphors I missed? How is it possible that Uncle Dickie was such an important force in Tony's life, when he was not around in his formidable years? The movie lost me. I kept watching it because I thought- I'll get the gist eventually. Never happened. The racial disparages was uncalled for. It did nothing for the movie. The movie lacked substance and direction. Everybody disrespecting everybody! I think they just threw something together so they could get to the next part- if there is going to be one. One thing did make me wonder- In the Sopranos when Tony visits Uncle Junior in that horrible hospital, Tony mentions something about him knowing he killed Uncle Dickie and he was glad he was going to die and rot in that place- something like that. So- how does he find out it was Uncle Junior who had Dickie killed? Again- why is he talking about Uncle Dickie when he really didn't live long enough to be a part of Tony's life? The whole thing was contrived and discombobulated. I thought it was just me. You really do need to have a sit down with David Chase. He's got some explaining to do! Blessings.

I just saw the movie and I agree with you. What I would add is that the whole plot of the movie felt disorienting, like not having an actual ark, and being uncertain if Dickie or Tony is the story about, it tries to build a story of the two but neither of them gets enough focus and you always expect that the meaningful things will happen with the other one. All we saw is scenes about a problematic kid and a criminal with a horrible personality, and the ending of the movie was supposed to be dramatic while they missed to show anything to like about these characters. I was waiting to see a character development of Tony with some actual heavy traumas or just milestones, but everything that had to do something with him in the story, was so chaotic. Junior's motivation to kill Dickie is just ridiculous, the conflict between Dickie and the blacks leads nowhere, not to mention that the "big moment" of Tony in this movie was swearing that he's done with crime and theft, then the movie ends and Chris's voice says this guy will send him to hell. The whole movie feels like it's just a cut piece of a larger painting and the composition feels uncomfortable because the eye misses the cut parts of the image. If you didn't watch the Sopranos, you couldn't even figure out anything about who Tony will become when growing up or why was he in this movie at all, and even if you saw it, this piece didn't add to, but takes away from Tony's world. And the visually oversaturated imagery of the whole movie just ruins even the mob movie atmosphere and no matter how they try, they can't sell Alessandro Nivola as a tough guy, especially as the legendary father of Chris Moltisanti. I would watch the Sopranos again instead.

I’ve seen him getting a lot of hate for no reason. I thought he was fantastic and hope to see a followup movie or two.

I agree wish they would’ve focused more on young Tony soprano instead of the other stuff to be honest

I watched it again just for Michaels performance. He absolutely nailed the mannerisms of Tony Soprano as played by his father. For me it’s only his scenes that I’d re-watch again and again.

I agree 100% Not only was it boring, they advertised it as a Tony Soprano origin story & they didn't even feature Tony at all. Hot steaming pile of crap
