Babies for great apes are rare, Gorillas usually have 1 offspring every 4-5 years and orangutans have 1 around every 7 years. This relative rarity in childbearing and raising have lead some psychologists to suggest that it plays a part in the compassion that great apes and other species hold not only towards their own offspring but other creatures as well. Orangutan females specifically are capable of caring for smaller animals like we do with pets, and are very careful around infantile creatures.

​@quickstep2408 Though it's easier to track such behaviors among captive great apes, there've been plenty of instances of Silverbacks accepting babies who weren't their own - or even ones who were 'adopted' into the troop. A recent example - and it's been awesome to watch - is Cleveland Zoo's Mokolo's acceptance of baby Jameela from the Ft. Worth Zoo. Jameela's birth mother didn't respond to her after a C-section birth and there weren't any suitable foster moms for her. Fwiw, vets believe J's mom didn't have the flood of hormones she would after a normal birth experience. Freddie, the very elderly alpha female foster mama who claimed baby J, is extraordinary: this is her second 'adoption' in the last 3 years.

Gorillas are good fathers. There are videos where the kids use dad as a trampoline, and a video of a gorilla dad taking his kids for a walk.

Oh my days❣️He was so gentle and seemed to be smiling.🥰 Sometimes gorilla mamas are anxious about their babies approaching the silverback, but Mobi’s mum wasn’t one bit concerned. She clearly knows that Kisimu is a sweetheart and would be gentle with his wee girl. The more I watch gorillas, the more I love them.❤

Reminds me of the story of a gorilla that would "steal" his kids, holding them gently in his arms, in order to get mom to chase him around for fun. Both knew it was a game it was so sweet. Animals have such personality ❤
