Koko isn't necessarily speaking sign language. She understands the vocabulary of very basic signs, however lacks grammar structure. The sentences she strings together are often vague. It would be many generations of selective breeding on gorillas before we could even come close to them actually answering that. The key differentiator between humans and other animals that can speak (be it Koko with sign language, or parrots with vocalizations) is that animals have never asked a question. There's only been one known case, and even then it hasn't repeated or been recorded on camera. Language is difficult for other animals simply because their brains aren't evolved to learn it, whereas we traded certain functions to be able to acquire language.

You must know that humans are not smart at all,we think wer smart because actually we are only thing on this planet with advanced brain,that was part or mistake by evolution,that extra space that we got from smaller jaws made difference between us and monkeys,but i am sure that one day when we are compared to other intelegent races we wont be near as them,unless we evolve/mutate or change our selfs to be smarter.Our main power is observing dont forget that from Babylon/Roman to medieval period nothing changed,we are copying nature and animals,on our own wer stupid,and thats why we need to const. learn or we forget.And look bad this world is going,wars for fuel/dominance/power just like and worste,our social life is geting destroyed with growing coruption from inside and with conflits from outside,wer living in 2014 and we still have politcs system that is old more then 2000 years.people/democracy have zero power unless they fight and die for it to win their rights,we are making/producing bad tehnology and every day worste food,our kids are geting dumb,We are faling to make life better for working clas and growing number of people is only becoming HARD WEIGHT...and we all know that and have brain-power to stop it but we cant,because people who will run our system are always going to fail because personal needs/greed wins.

Yes, what a wonderful story of friendship, Gods creation never ceases to amaze me! No offence to those who believe in it, but I don't see how a Big Bang could suddenly create something so intelligent and human like, so understanding and incredible. Clearly some thought was put into the design of every creature.
@KudiGamer8 жыл бұрын
Duncan Dunky But then again comes the question, who or what made the creator, who or what designed the designer. And what ´thought´ did he/she/it put into the creation of viruses such as aids and STDs? I don´t try to be offensive, but I would be genuinely interested what your take on such questions is?
@treesaregreen18558 жыл бұрын
Clearly you are atheist. I understand your question about where God comes from, it must be hard for people like yourself to understand, but I pray it will be so. Do you believe in the Big Bang theory? If so, where did the gases and 'big bang' come from? Until you come to know Jesus as Saviour I am not sure you'll really have an answer as to where creation came from. The bible contains all the answers to life, but as you don't read it I won't argue on this one ;)
@treesaregreen18558 жыл бұрын
As to viruses, they are a result of sin. Everyone has sinned, but the blood of Jesus Christ Gods Son cleanses us from all sin. I agree that viruses such as aids are terrible, but look at the state of the world today. It gets worse by the second. I can't say that God didn't create viruses, but I can say he cares for everyone who will believe Him, and he uses tests and trials along life's thorny road only to preserve us and to strengthen us.

Im always crying when I see that people found a way to communicate with animals.
This 70-year old that I am couldn't help but cry when I was hit by that terrible news about Koko's death, such a humanoid and gentle, and playful giant primate, a very dear relative of the human kind. In my opinion, there are proportionally much more humans that are much less kind than those so-called ''wild'' primates. RIP Koko... Mrs Patterson, I wish you to recover from such a loss rapidly while reminding all the great time you had with Koko.

Koko fills me with desperate sorrow. Looking into her eyes reminds me of how awful humans are to other species - majestic sentient beings that feel love, fear and pain just like we do. It's quite severe that people still believe this. It's pretty and wholesome but unscientific. I don't doubt the fact that Koko and Penny had a lovely relationship but no, the gorilla did not talk and it is not possible to teach a gorilla human language. There are several essays and papers on this. So please, for the love of science, don't be fooled
@JappyisHappy-sg6td6 ай бұрын
yea unfortunately they are huge frauds, who were just taking advantage of the media. no scientific organization has ever backed up their claims about koko, bc they all knew how fraudulant it was
@Peter_19864 ай бұрын
There are multiple scenes where Koko follows detailed instructions, and associates strings of words with specific actions; you cannot get those effects from a creature who doesn't have any idea of the meaning of words. Some people just think that it is cool and hip to doubt Koko's ability to understand the meaning of words, because they feel that this makes them stick out; there are always people like that who are like "well ACKSHU4LLY, it did NOT happen" whenever someone amazing happens.
@australopithecus_lucis4 ай бұрын
@@Peter_1986It's just unscientific. There are several papers that disprove this "understanding". I don't doubt that she wasn't mindless during it all, she definitely caught on something here and there. But the results are exaggerated. If you don't want to look into the papers, just look up "koko gorilla debunked" here on youtube, you'll find a lot of content that covers the topic. The story is actually sadder than you might expect, leaning into animal abuse. Amazing things happen all the time, I don't mean to dismiss them, but believing that this is all true, that she understood language, is delusional. You can't take a presumed fact as factual simply because it's pretty. If you want to be amazed while looking at scientifically-accurate data, look into communication of animals that is innate to the species, not that was pushed by one species (homo spaiens) onto another. Octopuses, bees, whales, crows, ants and even actual primates are all fascinating in this regard
@dpelpal25 күн бұрын
This ape is just classically conditioned. Then, we anthropomorphize the behavior and believe its communicating. Reminds me of "Clever Hans".

Koko is an extraordinary creature of God. That she would love Robin Williams as so many of us do is very special. Is it possible to explain to her that he was very ill? The kind of illness isn't important just that he was ill. And then to give her all the love anyone can muster. That she is very sensitive and very loving is not only evident but a tribute to her. Love her, love her, love her, I wish I could but I sit here limited by multiple sclerosis. My heart can and does love her. My person is a lump.
