your carrier may ask this number when troubleshooting if you have problems, possibly to authenticate you, or when you switch service to a new phone. The carrier has this information even if you don’t volunteer it. The problem is that many people inside of a carrier, call centers, phone stores, and 3rd party phone stores also have access. Efani eliminates that access to your personal information as part of our security and privacy.

SIM number and IMEI number are separate. The only entities that would know both are the user and the carrier, or possibly phone store employee who helped you in the past.

IMEA number can be used in two primary ways. (1). Anyone with law enforcement access or has access inside a carrier can track your location. (2). Makes it easier to impersonate you and SIm swap you. When a hackers calls carrier support and knows the IMEI they will claim the phones been stolen and need to switch service to another SIM.

That is a good question. If you buy a phone in a store it’s guaranteed to be a new IMEI and not reported as stolen and this locked. When you buy a refurbished phone, you want to buy from a reputable provider like backmarket.com where they check to make sure it’s locked. However, if you buy from eBay for example then I would personally ask for the IMEI first so you can check it in the database to make sure it’s not locked by the carriers.
