the way it was done though was poorly and careless. people are pissed because Kira coming back gains nothing- no real character progression, *he already had his character arc during SEED* him coming back with all that screen time as the main does NOTHING to really advance his character in ways we already didn't know. it'd be far more interesting if he was somehow the antagonist, but that's not how the show was written, altas everyone hating Jeasus yamato for doing no wrong. (or anything at all but being a Mary sue)

As soon as Freedom returns to the battlefield it becomes the common target of all ZAFT machines. Kira uses the beam shield to block the incoming shots, and as he shoots down the missiles released by an enemy Zaku to Eternal after he evades them. Under Kira's control, his machine accelerates, spins and charges in an instant; all Zakus which cannot keep up can do nothing but let it fly around, and have their armaments destroyed by beam sabers. The next second, Freedom switches to its dual rifles, and diagonally shoots through two hostile machines. As Freedom disables the ZAFT machines one by one, a Gouf manages to seize a moment where Freedom stays still and without warning sends out its whip, tightly wrapping around Freedom's right let. At the same time, another machine of the same type also holds down Freedom's left arm from the opposite direction. Just before the electric charge can shock the machine, something suddenly shoots out in all directions from Freedom - those are its wings. The eight wings fly as if they were alive, and release beams altogether towards those two Goufs like rain, accurately shooting through their arms, heads and whips and allowing Freedom to escape like a hound breaking free from chains. These eight wings, powered by the DRAGOON system, can move independently and attack from all directions. This weapon system was adopted by Moebius Zero of Earth Alliance and Providence of ZAFT. Kira can already masterfully use his new armaments even though he has just obtained them not long ago. With the help of the multi-lockon system, he manages to lock onto at least ten machines at the same time, and presses the trigger. All the muzzles fire altogether, including the two rifles in both hands, the two railguns on the waist, the beam cannon on the abdomen, and the eight DRAGOONs. All the beams sweep across the whole area, penetrating the heads, armaments and limbs of the ZAFT units. In just two minutes, Kira has already silenced all pursuing machines. Seizing the momentun, he turns to the three Naz-ca class battleships. As if they are fearing the approaching Freedom, all of their cannons open fire. Leisurely snaking through the deadly beams, each of which is enough to melt a whole machine by grazing it, Kira fires his railguns and simultaneously launches the DRAGOONS. Following his battlecry, the scattered DRAGOONS release arrows of light, resembling a cage going for the group of battleships. All of their cannons and thrusters are hit or burnt one after another. And just like this, the battle is over. All ZAFT units are disabled, and the battleships have lost navigation control.

I think Kira realized some things on his relationship with Lacus on this episode or they had an offscreen moments between episodes 39-41. You'll notice that on the battle of ORB until the end of the series, Kira becomes more concerned for Lacus and he is always at her side like he is making sure he is there when she needs him. Their intimacy is more apparent and you can tell that he is more fond of her than on first half of the series just by the expressions he makes when he is with her. My favorite is when she cuddles on him while they walk together after meeting Shinn on episode 50 of the remaster. Comparing that to the first episodes of the series where Lacus is always behind Kira when they are walking on the beach, shows that their relationship has developed throughout the show.

I like to think that it's after she left back to space and then again after he lost the freedom (and nearly died) that his priorities came more into focus and that he was finally able to move past the war two years ago, or he realized that the now was far too important to spend in the past. So he was finally able to let go of Flay and truely resiprocate Lacus's feelings

I noticed something about this show with this rewatch. There's a lot of "must get person away from toxic influence to get them to better themselves". It's more overt than in SEED. For Cagalli, and later, Lt. Amagi and the loyalists, it's away from Seiran-controlled Orb. For Athrun, it's away from Durandal For Shinn, it's away from both Durandal and Rey. And for Neo, to return to being Mu once more, he has to be taken away from Djibril.

I love how Kira, even with his "god" piloting skills, gets owned in the Strike because its such an old and outdated model, while everyone else is using the latest techs. It shows the gradual technical evolution of military tech in this series, where what was formerly an elite model can become cannon fodder to the latest "mass produced" MS's with current tech. Even though it was plot purposes, its nice to see that tech advantage actually matters.

Movie spoiler alert: That passage they were reading from about destiny plan sounds really similar with what lacus' mother told her about the world and the indivdiual. The movie showed that lacus' mother was a geneticist in mendel and worked with durandal. COULD SHE BE THE WHO HAS WRITTEN THIS? The movie failed to expand on this part of the lore. I really wished they opted a series rather than the movie. Seems pretty interesting subplot 😭

I like this remastered. However, I think this episode was the peak of AsuCaga relationship which I hope while Kira saving Lacus, Athrun say "Cagalli or I have to save Cagalli" when he want to stand up after hearing the annoucement of the plant who wants to blow up ORB once again. Instead of saying that, Athrun just said "but" then Meyrin appearT_T. Disc: I dont hate meyrin, I like her as the best girl who makes good decision to help Athrun, but please don't butt into AsuCaga, I don't like to see Cagalli suffering when these 39, 40, 41 are the episodes for Cagalli strike back. The ONE big downside of these Remasters. Promoting Vestige to proper 4th opening will always be the smarter decision, but it somehow means it cannot be the insert song it used to be, unlike with Rhythm Emotion for Gundam Wing. In its place, we're left with an...ok BGM for Kira, but it doesn't match Vestige. At least the other former use of Vestige gets replaced with Meteor, but that makes me wonder why they didn't just Meteor here. Though we DO get a much better outing for Kira on the Rouge, showing he's not reliant on Freedom for his skills, even if he is outclassed on the Rouge Ootori. Also, took me a while, but I finally understand the sudden uncharacteristic reluctance Lacus has in giving him the Strike Freedom. She's most definitely heard that the Freedom got whacked, and though Kira is alive, he almost bit it too. Seeing him in the Strike Rouge confirms it. So while misplaced then and there, I get why her fear of him getting killed flared up at the worst time. Also, Athrun and Cagalli, finally talking with clearer heads. Athrun's case is obvious, but in Cagalli's, we see that she REALLY needed the presence of the loyalists who joined up with the Archangel. She hasn't infamously cried like a baby since then. Tears like here, sure, but not so weakly. She will cry once more next episode, but it's healing crying.

Lacus was reluctant because she doesn't want Kira to pilot again, that's why she didn't want to give him the Freedom back either. It's not just because she's worried about him dying but also because she knows Kira doesn't want to fight and only does it because the people dear to him would die if he didn't.

I prefer the original, where Kira had only the Strike Rouge Aile instead. He was actually struggling, and had to use every bit out of the aging machine just to barely make it to the eternal.

Strike Freedom's reveal was amazing. I hadn't watched the first SEED show but I still got goosebumps over Kira's return. Vestige played a big part of the scene's impact but of course they ditched that in this "Remaster" of the series. Tbh...I would have just preferred a remaster off the OG Blu-rays maybe with some of the new art. keep the OG voices and 4:3. The zoomed in shots are not fantastic.
