I’m shooting a Concept Torch for a studio… using a iPhone 13 pro max + other attachments. I wanna take advantage of “cinematic mode with HDR”. Would this be a good idea? I start filming Tuesday. I did think about the 4K @ 24fps? But as you know.. this is not possible in cinematic mode. Any thoughts 💭 would be appreciated. Thanks. 👍🏻

But it really took off from the absolute basics to covering all the features really comprehensively & I had so much to note down & learn eventually. Thanks a ton.

Just discovered your channel, Simon, and already watched some of your videos, and made a couple of comments (and questions). Your presentation is superb - clear, precise, fluid, and covers everything no matter how small a detail it might be. You make no assumptions about what the viewer may or may not already know. Outstandingly good and useful videos. I've been into photography for decades, and video for a little less, but am just really getting into using my iPhone as well as my DSLR and action cameras. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max on preorder, with 1TB of storage (hey, if you're going to spend that amount, may as well go the whole hog!!) ;) I'm so impressed with your channel - only discovered it last night - I've just signed up as a Patreon. Several years ago I used to take amazing sunset portraits by locking the exposure on the sunset and then using the iphone's flash to fill and light my subject. Now with the latest IOS releases, when I try the same thing and use the flash, as soon as the flash goes off, it unlocks the exposure and everything is washed out. I live on a lake and miss taking these sunset shots. Any ideas on how to make this work again with an iPhone 13 pro max? I'm happy to send my past shots so you can see what I'm talking about. Thank u for this video. If u don’t have a newer model iPhone, r u just out of luck in taking good photos? I have an iPhone 11.and I have to take a lot of pics of clothing, for online selling. Good, detailed pics, with accurate color, are a big part of what sells items. All I have inside, where I have to take pics, is the ceiling light. I can’t seem to ever get the phone adjusted right, where the color of the item is accurate. The color is always off & my white background looks yellow & dull. Ugh, so frustrating… I can’t afford a newer iPhone with a better camera or an expensive lighting set up. Is it most likely due to having a camera on an older iPhone, the lack of my inside lighting, or an operator error, who don’t take good pics😏The color or correct shade of the item color, never comes out right. Any advice appreciated. Thanks so much!

I don't think the 11 has that bad of a camera, it's pretty decent. Are you sure you don't have a weird setting on or True Tone or night mode is on? Those settings make the screen yellow.

My phones overheat when you push them too hard and it's hot (regardless of indoor or outdoor). Phones like other computers overheat. I had to put my Samsung in the fridge recently when we had the heatwave. Turn off other apps, turn down settings, bring an ice pack. Don't use Log
@llb3652 жыл бұрын
@@SiHorrocks Thanks for the response Simon!!! It’s interesting that you said “Don’t use log” because I have been using it. It seems like the hit to performance is not worth the benefit using log. I’ll start weighing this myself going forward. Thanks again!!!

Hu Simon, always providing good content, may I ask you a question? If you don't record on 25fps how do you avoid the flickering from the artificial lights? Thanks and keep going! 👍
@SiHorrocks2 жыл бұрын
one option is to use Filmic Pro and switch to 50hz, then play with the shutter speed. Otherwise I will just try to avoid filming those lights. As well, some modern lights do not have the 50hz frequency, so you can't avoid the flicker anyway, even in 25fps

Does anyone remember the first iPhone only took pictures, and the max storage was 8 gigs? Crazy how far we’ve come in such a short period of time
@anchoragedj Жыл бұрын
They sold both the 4 and 8GB models in 2007 (iPhone #1;)) That’s not enough for the operating system now (4GB model). And yes, I agree with you about how far they have come in 15 years. Enough so that we have tens of thousands of KZbin videos going through and comparing with the best systems on the market - cameras that use glass that can cost a 1/4 million bucks or more (for a set of primes 24, 35, 50, 85, and 135mm @ T 1.2) and bodies that are of similar price. The fact that we can barely see the differences, certainly without a trained eye or ear (for the other 1/2 of the film, audio;)). As a B/C-Roll/CrashCam the iPhone is brilliant. Even for macro shooting… where each can be done with the Alexa/Zeiss combo, but not as easily (underwater shot preparation), efficiently or in many cases, effectively. And I’m an iPhone guy, there’s a little competition out there with the S23 & Pixel 7, etc. I think it’s a disservice to continue calling/referring to it as a phone or even smartphone lol. It’s pocket computer that’s incessantly connected to the entire world 24/7/365 with phenomenal performance, insane battery life and speed, and it’s your ‘everything’, literally. From your calendar and contacts, banking, taxes, documents, photos and videos, ‘camera’ and calculator, flashlight and internet browser, eReader and music/movie/magazine or book library - your games, references and/or hobbies. The smartphone is most folks’ holy of holies and should be treated as such, IMO. So much of our lives now live in our… phone? I think it’s high time we come up with a new name for our ‘smartphones’. What it is? Dunno - but I grew up with party lines and actually ‘dialing a number’. Tethered by the worst possible cords possibly invented in history… then, we had to dial seven digits and if you dialed 0, an operator would be able to help you. The phone/cellular radios are just a few of the dozen or more radios in your phone nowadays! From Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to NFC and Apple’s proprietary technology like Airplay, AirDrop, NFC and the different frequency bands for the 3 or 7 different (lol) cellular options. From Edge/3G to LTE to 5G and it’s crop of faster and fastest ways to drain your monthly data limits. Then all the telephony with video options via third party apps or proprietary services like FaceTime. That’s just the comms. These things are almost magical and impossible to have dreamt we’d ever see such a device much less nearly ubiquitously, own them. I’m with ya

I'm a a complete loss as to how to capture great audio of a marching band in a football stadium. Here are challenges that I have faced: 1. Someone talking very loudly behind me in the recording deck and crowd noise. Right now, I use my iPhone 12 Pro with a Movo shotgun mic. I'm looking to get a better mic, and I'm wondering about how to reduce crowd noise from the stands and on the recording deck (behind the mic). Do you have any suggestions?
@SiHorrocks2 жыл бұрын
to record the best sound get as close to the source as possible. If you can't get close, the use a professional shotgun mic (my Sennheiser cost £700). Some shotgun mics are designed to capture sound from distance. If you have one of those tiny shotguns, they're pretty useless
@SuburbanGardening2 жыл бұрын
@@SiHorrocks the struggle is that the band directors want to see the marching from the press box. Any idea what I search for for long range mic? I should mention that hearing the band isn’t the big issue. It’s hearing the crowd between the camera and the field and loud people in the recording area behind the camera. I’ll definitely check out some long range mics.
@SiHorrocks2 жыл бұрын
@@SuburbanGardening I have a Sennheiser 416. Another option is a wireless mic system. But why not record the audio separately? Get a small Zoom field recorder and place it near the band. Just leave it running and sync it with your video in post

@@SiHorrocks I’m afraid that having a mic close to the marching band will pick up more for the instruments closest to it making the marching band sound off balance

I've recently started using Filmic Pro on my iPhone 12pm and want to improve the audio. Elsewhere several KZbinrs have recommended wireless Lavalier mikes so I bought one. (No named products given, but I note that they all look identical so I guess they're made by one firm and rebadged many times). I have to say I'm mightily disappointed, and carrying out my own tests, the iPhones built-in mikes do a FAR better job and seem to be free of distortion, but they are distance dependent. I'm not a big video person so I'm not wanting to spend big money, but do you have any recommendations? (I tried your link in the show notes for Lavalier mikes for an iPhone but the link didn't work). Blessings.

How exactly do you disable dynamic tone mapping? First you tell us it's impossible on an iphone, then you show us on an iphone what it looks like when dynamic tone mapping is completely disabled, which suggests both that it can be disabled, and that sometimes one wants to disable it. But you don't tell us how to disable it. Never mind. It goes by pretty quickly, so one can easily miss the fact that that was on a Samsung.
