+Jumbled_ Thoughts Apple makes great computers if you are ok with being trapped in their eco system forever. Because everything is so hard to change over. Just get one that will last. That means a i7 or if you can't afford that an i5. 8GB of RAM and storage doesn't really matter unless you like pictures but then you should get a external hard drive.

+Jon Knecht Yes, lets compare a 1800$ MBPro 13inch i5 that's double the weight and half the battery life, more graphics power of course to this 1000$ Samsung 13 inch i5 laptop which simply has less graphics power. Lets spend 800+ for a heavier and less battery life laptop cause fuck money, I'm guessing Mac users usually aren't that bright. Side note: Mac says their MB Pro has 10 hour battery life but you would find that to simply not true if you google some real world testing.

I live in Hong Kong and they have the 13.3 inch with the Core i7-6500U available there for US$1200. I've been using the Ativ Book 12.2" for a few months now and it does everything it's supposed to for college. When the price got down to about 650 USD I had to give it a try, as the Asus UX305LA I'd had previously had build quality issued I couldn't ignore. The Samsung ultrabook has not disappointed. It's mostly for productivity with taking notes in class, doing research, and writing papers but with the excellent HD screen it does media very well, along with speakers that get the job done just fine. I'm thoroughly impressed with Samsung Ativ books. Mine being the svelte blue color I figured riding in a backpack day after day it would show signs of wear pretty quickly but that just wasn't the case. Not having a touchscreen doesn't bother me as I hate fingerprints and the glossy screen that comes along with them. Battery life is plenty good. The hardware is excellent quality and the trackpad improved dramatically when upgrading to Windows 10, and, it's downright sexy. The common reaction I get from people is a kind of giggle about how slim it is. My only complaint is the backspace key being about half what it should be, IMO. I'd highly recommend any of the Ativ line ultrabooks. They're not powerhouses but if you're carrying your laptop all over the place these are the perfect solution.

@youtubeuser92808 жыл бұрын
+Hamad Alruwaih Bearing in mind that this Samsung laptop is considerably lighter (more specifically, MUCH lighter) than the MacBook Air 13 (2 lb / 0.85 kg versus 3 lb / 1.35 kg), I think the answer to your question mainly depends on whether less weight is important to you. It also depends on whether you want a newer processor, a higher capacity storage drive and more RAM (in which case, you would again go for the Samsung).

As a MBA user, it is sure now Apple should re-consider their MBAs, because that laptop is superb in much aspects (except battery life). 999 dolar is a good deal for this laptop I think. @HiPlains18 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lisa for this review. This IMO is the best ultra-portable on the market. MS can't fix DPI scaling and its broke. Completely. So 1080P is the sweet spot for a 13" ultrabook. I love the retro look with silver and black KB. Thank god they did not put a light KB like HP does. I have a 2013 Book 9 full HD matte that weighs 2.5 lbs that probably got 5 hours when it was new. This baba weighs a half lb ligher and gets 7 hours. Wow. I paid 1500 for my Book 9 with 256 SSD and this guy comes in at under a grand. I'm about ready to pull the trigger. For anyone else looking for a ultrabook this is the best one for windows. Books 9's have always been top of class, king of the hill in my book.
@WirIez8 жыл бұрын
+HiPlains1 " MS can't fix DPI scaling and its broke", what are you talking about? It is not broke, the DPI scaling works just fine. It is not up to Microsoft to fix other companies apps to that they are more friendly to DPI. It is like saying that is it Apple's fault that some apps can't run on the newer devices.
@HiPlains18 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. But that's just the point allot of apps don't scale properly under windows. I don't care who you like to point the finger at. The end result is the same. That's why I prefer FHD displays. If I'm going to use a higher resolution I would want a much larger display > 22 inches. Also its probably the reason this notebook gets 7 hours battery life at a 2 lb form factor. Takes less power to drive FHD displays. Not understanding why manufacturers like to use higher rez screens on smaller displays. Better to have a larger display and turn the damn scaling off then to rely on MS"s DPI virtualization to zoom in apps.. Which looks horrible. This is the part where I feel MS failed at. Even though its probably not their fault. The fix really does NOT help.
@WirIez8 жыл бұрын
"Better to have a larger display and turn the damn scaling off then to rely on MS"s DPI virtualization to zoom in apps.. Which looks horrible." Sure it does. Apps that support MS's DPI virtualization looks really good. I am sticking to my first comment about why MS can't fix this.
@HiPlains18 жыл бұрын
WirIez Not every app supports DPI vitalization so it won't always look as good. So I guess your answer is to simply uninstall the app or start squinting. My point is with FHD you can turn off DPI scaling and everything will look good. And 1080P is pretty decent resolution for a 13". To me FHD presents less compromise for the user regardless of who you want to point the finger at.
@WirIez8 жыл бұрын
HiPlains1 Well, if you really want to use that app you could just choose 1920x1080 in resolution settings. But I get your point. It is just that I am a heavy laptop user (around 5 hours a day) and I can honestly say that I do not have this DPI problem on any of the programs that I am currently using. Still, I find it kind of ridiculous to have a 13 inch screen with 4k, I barely use the touch and the laptop costed me a fortune. So I would say that 1080p is the sweet spot for 13 inch laptops but if you do choose 4k, Windows DPI-scaling will help a lot!

Lisa you are simply the best. I wanted the XPS 13 but I got to feel this laptop side by side with it and it changed my mind. As sleek as the XPS and the Macs are they still feel like unnaturally heavy slabs of metal for their size. The weight of this is perfect. Now if they could just put the darn logo in the middle... I like Lisa's reviews but this laptop didn't live up to expectations for me. I purchased this laptop to replace my Asus ux303ua after watching this review. I have since sold it and gone back to my Asus. My problem with the Samsung Notebook 9 was the battery life. and the useless backlit keyboard This laptop is super light, but it's super light because it has a very small battery. I ran my own battery test on it after I discovered it could not make it through half a day without needing to be charged. I turned wifi and bluetooth off, turned the screen down to 50% brightness and ran a movie on a loop. Nothing else running. The laptop lasted just under 5 hours. With wifi on under real world conditions I was getting about 3 hours of use. For me that's not long enough for an ultrabook. My Asus ux303ua is heavier at over 3lbs but the battery life is better at about 5 hours real world use. The other issue I had with the Samsung notebook 9 is the backlit keyboard. It's a faint greenish color that doesn't really illuminate the keyboard. I found this wasn't very useful. Maybe because I was already used to the Asus ux303ua which has a backlit keyboard that lights up the whole keypad quite nicely. Bottom line is this laptop is ok, but it doesn't really crush the competition with the deficiencies mentioned above.

+MobileTechReview You really should! Because I'v got one 15'' model. It's perfect except that the keyboard backlight doesn't work at all. I checked on amazon reviews and apparently I'm not the only one. Then called Samsung USA and they claimed this 15 model simply does not come with backlit keyboard. They also told me to double check the official specs. I did and surprisingly found out the "backlit" keyword has been removed from the specs page. I swear it was still there 2 weeks ago and I really should've screenshotted it. Now I have to return it and off course pay for the shipping fee myself 'cause as Samsung said, "it's not defective, you just don't like it..." How smart they are!!! If you could review the 15'' model, it maybe bring up to Samsung's attention. Thanks!

+MobileTechReview Hmm, Displaymate specified surface pro 4 using Samsung PLS and IGZO panel. Maybe microsoft is using both PLS and IGZO panel.

I disagree that the lack of a touchscreen is a disadvantage. Not all of us want a touchscreen: few categories of "work" (word processing, programming, etc.) require one. Not having a touchscreen reduces the weight of the laptop and prolongs battery life. It also forces the manufacturer to focus on producing a high quality trackpad, which Samsung looks to have achieved in this instance. The only disadvantage I can see is that Samsung has not, apparently, provided the option of having Windows 7 preinstalled, which a number of business users still prefer (for ease of use, reliability, software compatibility, and so on). It is also unfortunate (not that this is a criticism of the laptop itself) that Samsung continues to avoid the European market. (I would finally add, as has already been mentioned in other comments for this video, that Apple laptops do not have a touchscreen but, while Apple laptops are fawned over, the lack of a touchscreen on a Windows laptop is almost always mentioned as a 'drawback' by reviewers. Which is paradoxical, considering that Apple was the pioneer of touchscreen technology which is actually usable.)
