I have damaged panel close to the roof. Is it possible to replace a 6' section and splice it into the remainder of the trailer or do I have to go 25' all the way to the end? Seems like a lot of material and cost?
@mobiltec Жыл бұрын
I would have to see a photo of your trailer so I know where the seams are. But you will probably have to replace the entire top panel if your trailer is made with two 4 foot high panels. I don't know the year or make of your trailer so it's hard for me to help. Email me at mobiltec@gmail.com with some photos...

Hey Larry. Great video! I am installing my new skins today that I got from Hemet Valley RV. I am curious, once you have all the staples around the edges and by the door on curb side, do you staple in the middle of the walls (in the breaks of course)? Meaning, does the siding need support in the middle of the pieces or is around the sides, doors and windows enough to secure it? Thanks in advance.
@mobiltec3 жыл бұрын
Use as few staples as possible to hold the skin on until J Rail and all windows and doors are in. I only put them in the creases around the outside edges. For windows only in creases on the sides and if you can get away from doing top and bottom for now do so. The window flanges will secure it all when installed. Make sure it is as warm as possible in the place you are installing skin. I try to heat up my shop to 85 degrees when installing metal. Or if outside wait for a nice warm or even hot day.

@@mobiltec Thanks Larry. It was a hot 86 today. I was able to get top and bottom of both sides done today. Still need to cut out the doors and windows. We did have the hardest time getting the bottom piece to fit in the s-curve and we had 3 people. The reason being is that due to the siding being shipped it was rolled and the bottom piece kept popping out when we tried to do the top. So grateful for your videos. I will be donating you some money to help you make more. One last question, as you said in this video, my trailer is not square and the curbside front is lower for some reason. This caused the bottom piece to have to be cut at a slight angle because of the auto roll. So...the middle section just below the j-rail has a break that runs along the side at an angle. Have you seen this before?

Hi Larry, for the edge that goes under the bottom of the wall, do you just overlap the frame flange that the wall rests on? I can’t imagine there is a way to tuck the fold in between the flange and the wall. I am doing a complete rebuild, and my walls are already screwed to the side of the deck. My trailer is a ‘54 Terry. Thanks. Mike

Hi Mike. I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about. Go to my website and contact me from there through email and send photos of the area you are talking about. I don't know what you mean by a flange.

I have a 14 foot Taurus and I'm thinking of redoing it from floor up and was curious what your average cost is to restore it, I'm curious if its cheaper to get a new trailer
@mobiltec6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how far you need to go with it. For a full restore you could be looking at anywhere from $5k to $8k in materials. Perhaps a lot less if you don't need new metal skin. Paint can cost anywhere from $200 to $800 depending on how you do it. If you need to replace any of the hardware or appliances or windows, the cost can be all over the place. There are no averaged when it comes to restoring vehicles of any kind.

hi Larry.hope your doing better. question i have is do you have any videos showing new skin install? from top to bottom? we have to install new skin... thank you
@mobiltec10 жыл бұрын
No but if you watch the metal skin parts in all three that I do have you will get the idea. Go to my website. The videos are all listed and indexed for easy finding. The Deville Series, The Shasta Series, and the 57 Westerner which shows how to put a new roof on and a lot of other metal tips. You'll find the 57 Westerner series in the Trailer Tidbits section. Hope that helps.

do staples need anything to waterproof them
@mobiltec3 жыл бұрын
The staples will be covered with putty tape and that is what waterproofes the area.

Is a vapor barrier need on the sides and top or just the top? Cheers, Bugs
@mobiltec5 жыл бұрын
In most cases the top, front and rear is all you need for vapor barrier but if you want to add a little puff to your trailer and a little more R factor you can do the sides as well. Just make sure you know where all your electric wires and or gas lines are so you don't poke a screw or staple into them. I paint over those with orange and you can see through the Roberts Unison that I use. That is available at Amazon by the way. Much cheaper than the crap at Home Depot.

i have to ask, are you not going to do the top piece , it's gonna look worse because the bottom is clean and shinny and top isn't? or are you gonna clean the top piece to be as new looking at least?

galvanized 1" crown Staples? Or what? Thanks I'm doing my 65 trailblazer now! No vapor barrier just foam board, frame off restore one man job!
@mobiltec3 жыл бұрын
1/4 inch 18 ga crown staples. I use only the ones sold by Porter Cable becuase they are the sharpest and will have no problem penetrating two layers of .030 metal. They are not galvanized.
@cmc028883 жыл бұрын
@@mobiltec ok thanks only 1/4", i thought longer for holding power, but I'll take your recommendation into consideration thanks Mobil tech!
@mobiltec3 жыл бұрын
@@cmc02888 No the length is 3/4 inch long. Quarter inch crown staples come in all different lengths. The quarter inch crown is the width. So they are called 1/4 inch crown staples. Then you pick the length you want. I use 3/4 inch long and 1/2 inch long depending on my needs.

do you use a router to cut the windows?
@mobiltec6 жыл бұрын
Keep watching... I have used a router but it can be not only very messy but will scratch the outside of the metal if you use a standard router with a table. I did find another way to do it but it can get out of control. So far, the best way to do it is with electric shears and a drill bit for marking the corners.
