I have found your tips very helpful, so here is how I was able to raise the sheet metal by myself. I modified my engine lift ( cherry picker ) by extending the boom with a 2x4 so that it could reach above the roof of my trailer. Then I drilled a hole in the long 2x4 midway then put a rope through the hole before screwing the metal to the 2x4. Then attached the rope to the boom and up she went. Was able to get it just right where it needed to be.

LOL That was quite a day. I tried to use the Benny Hill Theme for that clip but I got a copy right hit on it. I was a sheet rock hanger for 10 years. Fun but it was tough work for sure.
@rudrapawo47367 жыл бұрын
really, i ended up working with Craig for 24 years hangin and taping Gypsum. - This literally just crossed my mind, i wonder if there is a cost effective way to spray a vapor barrier on the insides of the metal panels. You see i live in sub-tropical South Carolina, mold happens fast here and i have become almost neurotic about how air with moisture in it flows. Even a minuet gap between plastic sheeting and metal can create a place to grow some microbes.
@mobiltec7 жыл бұрын
I don't know. But see here is the deal with moisture being created on the inside of the metal. It needs to cool off for moisture in the air to condense. If the air is just moist as in high humidity, no water will be created on the other side of the metal unless it cools off suddenly. And I mean a great deal. Not just a few degrees. I've tested this. So I would just go with the regular plastic sheeting such as Tyvec or the Roberts Unison that I show in my videos. I've done my own taping but I worked tracks for a long time and we had tapers that came in behind us. Then the spray guys came in.

@mobiltec8 жыл бұрын
I didn't use a vapor barrier on the sides Bear. This trailer and most others actually came with no side wall vapor barriers. I've never put the vapor barrier in the side walls of any of my trailers before. I know a lot of people think they are necessary but they really aren't. They are mostly needed for the top, and on canned hams the top includes the front and rear walls. This trailer actually needs no barrier on the front or rear either but it will have them.

The exterior metal, I replaced all my skins and I can’t find the video on how far apart and what pattern to follow for screwing the screws in the field of the external panels. And hello Larry! Should be finishing my camper this year, hopefully ! It’s been a long 6 years since I started!
@mobiltec5 жыл бұрын
That depends on a few things. Many trailers have no screws on the outside of the skin. The windows and baggage doors hold the skin on. Along with the brows and the outside ports. If you do need screws on the outside it will be in just a few places where ever it looks like the metal is not held to the framework very well... I don't really have a video that shows that because each trailer is so different in that respect.
@valeripicchi13675 жыл бұрын
@@mobiltec I have a 1963 Shasta Airflyte www.thepeachypost.com Should i use screws on the skins? I took out the baggage doors because i didn't like the idea of someone being able to pry it open and put something under where i sleep.
@mobiltec5 жыл бұрын
@@valeripicchi1367 Yes you should have a few screws here and there on that trailer especially if there are no baggage doors. I would say where the baggage doors are use three between the bottom of the window and the bottom of the trailer. Evenly spaced in height. Put them only in the creases of the metal. Not on the high parts. So 3 in the field under the windows. Two vertical rows of three each. Then maybe tow more vertical rows in the same creases somewhere in the middle. If the front side metal looks a little loose under the front windows then maybe a vertical row or two there. Just don't go crazy. You don't need them on every stud. Feel the metal and push on the creases and make up your own mind where they need to be before installing them. Make sure you hit a stud and hopefully you know where the wiring is in the wall if there is any so you don't hit that... Keep the lights all lit up while installing the screws. That way if you hit a wire you will know it right away.

Hi Larry I saw that u put home insulation on the camper , I put on mine 1 1/2 of insulation panels I saw this in KZbin bc it said bc the humidity or u get a leak inside it won’t get sag or go bad inside the walls of the camper what u think of doing it this way
@mobiltec Жыл бұрын
I disagree with the logic. First off, build your trailer so it doesn't leak. Second, the insulation is made out of fiberglass. So moisture that is just in the air won't hurt it because it will evaporate. Third, that solid foam panel does not work as well for insulation because it STORES heat and cold and eventually transmits it to the inside of the trailer. It's terrible for insulation... Fiberglass insulation does not transfer or store heat or cold. And it includes airspace around all the woven fibers which keeps it from storing heat or cold because it will dissipate into the surrounding air.

@mobiltec4 жыл бұрын
1/4 inch crown staples that are 3/4 inch long. You want to buy only Porter Cable Chisel Tooth staples because they are the only ones I've found that will penetrate two layers of the .030 in metal skin. That would be in the fold over area.
@jacobh19976 жыл бұрын
What insulation do you use?
@mobiltec6 жыл бұрын
I use R-13 in a roll and separate the layers into three. It's just the right thickness and sticks out just a bit so when you put the skin on you get the "puff factor"... Makes the skin feel more solid when you push on it slightly.

don't you put.silicond to prevent water damage? or leaks
@mobiltec7 жыл бұрын
Never. Silicone doesn't work on Metal. Metal shrinks and expands with cold and heat. The seal is broken first time there is a temperature change. If you install the metal properly and apply the putty tape under the J Rail properly it won't leak.
@couerl7 жыл бұрын
So do you just use it around the windows?
@mobiltec7 жыл бұрын
No. I hardly ever use it. The only place I ever used it was around the solid front-side windows of the 57 Shasta and that was because of the poor design of the wooden window frame itself. Silicone does not seal anything metal because the metal shrinks and expands with changes in temperature thus breaking the seal immediately... Just stay away from silicone calking. Stay away from calking anything on the outside of the trailer. If sealed properly it won't leak.
