I have to say I like 50 watt Marshalls over the 100 watt models. In this case I would go with the Marshall. You can tell it's a metal panel from the upper mids and highs thought. I find that changing the bright cap to between 100 pf and 250pf removes the ear piercing highs. It just goes to show that a classic circuit does not need to be changed or messed with for awesome tone.

@justinainsworth62643 жыл бұрын
This comment is somewhat old now, but if you still have the Marshall don't underestimate speakers and cabinet choice. A 4x12 G12M cab is the voice that a Marshall shines the best through. The right cab and speakers can make an amp sound totally different. Also a lot of old Marshalls like to see the guitar volume at 8-9(no treble bleed for Marshalls) instead of 10 for a fatter and less harsh lead tone. Longer cables also help as they were voiced brighter and brighter to accommodate people running 30-50 ft cables on stage in the 70s. Again you may know all of this but is worth mentioning. My Marshall sounds amazing with about 20-30 ft of cable(think Kossoff's velvety midrange texture) and very bright and harsh with a 10 ft cable. So the variance between Marshalls can be drastically affected by the cables you are using on each one. They are very sensitive to every piece of the chain plugged into them. EQ and presence needs to be as high as possible for maximum gain and clarity while the bass knob has the most drastic change over character of tone. Bass from 6-10(the amp is actually brighter with bass on 10 vs 8-9 because it allows the full signal to flow through preamp) the mids are pulled back some(think EVH and Jimmy Page), and with the bass on about 0-5 you get more of a woody low mid boost as opposed to bass frequencies and a softer treble(think Angus's 75-81 tone). Didn't plan to write so much, but I love Marshall tone and these things are what I don't see discussed enough on forums minus the speaker choice part. Cheers!

In the late 80's my guitar tech in Colonia said his friend who used out work at Ampeg was fixing amps again... took my JCM800 to Ken Fischer who tested it, put in new tubes, biased it... at some point a bit later (year or 2 cannot remember) Ken showed me a frame of an amp he was working on... sounded great - clean on low and nice overdrive on high... early prototype... another time he showed me one in a wooden cabinet that his friend or some woodworker he knew was making... then a combo version... WHO KNEW what Trainwreck would become??? It was just me at my amp techs house .. and I liked my Marshall.... but Ken was doing this for FUN, and because he knew he had the knowledge and the ear to make a LEGENDARY amp sound... he also told me he worked on Jimi Hendrix' Ampeg amps when he was a teenager at AMPEG in Avenel....

First off, I love your playing & voice Brother. Probably share the same opinion as many other viewers ( listeners ): Both amps sound great, but I think the Trainwreck has better cleans, while the old Marshall has better high gain tone. ( Too each his/her own of course. ) Have ya had a chance to try the fairly new Marshall SV20 ( "Studio Vintage" ......in head or combo )??? Marshall did their best to recreate the tone & layout of a 100w Plexi, but downsized to a 20w version.......and I believe they passed with flying colors. Man, from what I've heard on various videos, it sounds awesome, especially when jumping both channels. Their goal was to recreate the tone of a 100w Plexi driven hard, but at a sound level that doesn't give you tinnitus and sheer the enamel off of your teeth, lol.........in a much smaller & lighter package too......of course. Nice clean tones too.
@MOBontv4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Haven't had a chance to try the 20w yet but I'll put it on the list. Trainwreck is my favorite always but it is nice to explore other tones. Thanks so much for watching and chiming in. Love the info and feedback.
@howabouthetruth21574 жыл бұрын
@@MOBontv The pleasure was all mine Brother. if ya ever get around to trying the new little Marshall ( head or combo ).......make sure it's the SV20.......NOT the SC20. The SC20 is just a small version of a later JCM. I watched a comparison video between the two, and the little JCM ( SC20 ) really struggled to get good clean tones. Sure, it has more gain than "the new mini Plexi SV20", but a good pedal can always be used. You know how it is, it's much easier to add than subtract from what an amp already has. I truly believe you will be pleasantly surprised with the SV20. And it's 100% made in the UK Marshall factory. Some of it's circuitry was hand wired/soldered too. That's always a plus with mass produced amps. It's also loud as hell for a small amp, great for small to medium sized venues.......and practice with the band where volume has to be kept down.

My fav too. Thanks for watching

The marshall has more presence. Thinner sounding. Bright. It fails in clean tone like usual. The trainwreck is much better but it does lack a bit of presence

Marshall more aggressive and punchier than the trainreck also the marshall has lesser mids... Thanks for the videos Cheers

The Trainwreck no doubt. Marshall was okay but the Trainwreck whipped it.

Thanks for watching. Tough to capture these beasts on camera and youtube. Its really more matter of taste. Cool thou to see the similarities of where a Trainwreck partly comes from. Have a great day!

Strat sounds to shrill on both amps. Les Paul sounds better through the Trainwreck.

Not similar in any way. I like the Trainwreck, but unlike the Marshall I'd would have a problem with it in a band situation, if I were doing Rhythm, too much mids and clarity in the upper mids.

Stop it already not even near where you wrecked.

Theres no difference, just extra sagging

Hard to hear on the video, but in person its definitely different. Marshall is louder for sure, wreck has the sweet top end and chime where the marshall can get harsh. Interesting comparison for sure and it sure is a great Marshall

Just listened again and have come to conclusion these amps sound terrible at full throttle. Harsh, biting, and massively overdriven, neither cut the mustard. Perhaps the microphones can't handle the pressure...

Not easy to capture them and put it over the internet. I can tell the feel playing through them is unlike no other. Thanks for the comment
