This video was beyond informative for me. I had no idea Mobvoi and Fossil were running into this wall, and you completely change my outlook. I do like the Pixel Watch features, but not the design or price, and leaving it to Google of all companies to work on diferent SKU's and design will take years, they'll get bored and cancel their projects, just like they always do. I have a Huawei watch and honestly if could do payments and have better notification management, I would keep it forever. The battery easily lasts a whole week.

@GH0STST4RSCR34M yeah but you give up access to the play store on any watch that gets you two weeks of battery life. Don't get me wrong, that's probably a worthy trade-off for most people but just understand why people sometimes want a more complete operating system with access to the Play store... That's basically the trade-off. You can use Amazfit or Fitbit or something like that and not worry about charging it for weeks. But there's not much tinkering available on those operating systems. Frankly I think the ticwatch it's a nice middle ground because it's the only wear OS watch that you can reliably where all day and all night several days in a row without charging. That said, the way Google is nerfing the voice assistant on Qualcomm chipsets means I'll probably will switch to a fitness tracker next time I need a watch. If there's no wear OS option that has both the dual screen technology and dedicated Google Assistant button, then there's a really nothing compelling to keep me on the platform.

@GH0STST4RSCR34M A lot of those watches either have meh functionality or way too expensive. Or are just not my personal style. Obviously long battery life is awesome but I get by pretty fine on a day to day in a half. 3 days is honestly pretty fine because I'm charging things basically every night anyways.
@michaelcorcoran8768

@GH0STST4RSCR34M I definitely depend on voice recorder apps that come from the Play store. Definitely depend on Google keep. The ability to side load is a nice benefit. Again for a tinkerer, there's a big benefit I think to running a version of Android over a proprietary fitness tracker OS. But again I'm not ideological about this, I might very well switch to a fitness tracker at some point. Largely due to battery. Just like on an Android TV I benefit from being able to tinker with side loading and stuff, there are benefits to having a quasi-open source platform that allows side loading.

Really good video on something that I don't really usually think about buying but you've given plenty to think about. Regards to your comments about only having hardware matching with others from the same company, i feel that this is a total fail of a business plan, If you have a great set of earbuds for example but they only work with a specific brand of phone haven't you just alienated yourself from all of those potential sales from outside of that brand (on top of the sales from those who have brand bias) but what do I know I'm just a (slightly older) average user.

I've had both the TIcWatch 3 Ultra GPS and a Garmin Instinct Solar for the last 2 years. If there is no smart assistant anymore, which I barely used anyway, and you don't really use the voice calling function much, then it's the Garmin Instinct Solar series I'd pick every time. The newer Garmin Instinct series has the ability to produce unlimited battery power with sufficient sunlight exposure daily. I've been a smartwatch geek since my LG G Watch R, circa 2015, and the longer I analyze my use cases the more I realize that unless you are really serious about sports tracking then all you need is notifications. If you really are a fitness fanatic then you would probably better served by a Garmin Fenix or something by Coros or Suunto. As a Smart Home geek also, I'd be tempted back to Wear OS if the was better integration for tiles or widgets for smart home actions or routines, including those for Alexa. I know there are workarounds, because I have implemented them, but they are clunky.

In the review you mention that WearOS 3 is not very different than WearOS 2. Do you think that makes getting the latest WearOS later less of an issue? Mobvoi said that their unique architecture delayed WearOS 3 on the previous TicWatch and I am hearing that the TicWatch Pro 5 does not have the same development challenges. Also not having a digital assistant on a watch might be considered a plus for some.

It depends on Google really. A feature like Wallet for example. Google could say "you need to be current on this build of android for security", but then only help Samsung update to that tier. I'm WAY less concerned about specific uses like that, and genuinely, I've been solid on the older ticwatches. Each person will have to judge their own comfort level though.

As I was recently in the market for a smartwatch to replace a Garmin Venu 2, I really considered the Ticwatch Pro 3/Ultra. With the long update delay to Wear OS 3, I had to pass. I knew the Pro 5 was launching soon, but I like software updates. I ended up with a slightly used Galaxy Watch 5 even though I own a Pixel 7. The Android "ecosystem" has been cut up like highways through the wetlands. I don't care about the couple Samsung exclusive features, but I still don't appreciate Samsung locking them down either. I would have bought a Pixel Watch in a heartbeat if it could last a couple days. Fitbit may be outshipping Google, but their latest watches are heavily crippled (likely to enhance the Pixel Watch). I don't really fault anyone for buying into Apple. It all works together really well. Google is kinda sorta wishy washy trying it with things like Health Connect, but its ultimately frustrating for the end user who just wants all the 'Droid stuff to work together. P.S. For the love of endurance, give us better battery life. Mr. Bagnell, you're right. Screw those animations. Make it faster, make it sip, make it last.

I just can't handle the weak battery life and exynos chip.... Ironically, I now the view not having wear 3.0 as an advantage. You can buy the older tick watch Pro 3 for $150 and you get a native dedicated Google Assistant button. I'm honestly at the point where if my ticwatch pro 3 broke tomorrow I would probably replace it with another ticwatch pro 3... I could probably find one on the resale market for a 100 bucks. Save $250, the 4100 chipset is still way more powerful than the Pixel watch or the Galaxy watch chips. Yes it's on dead software.... But to me that's still preferable to not having dedicated assistant functionality and having to charge every night. But realistically that would only be an option near the short term which means sadly I'll probably end up switch Amazfit or something in time. If they're going to Nerf the platform so the only watch with wear os that can reliably last three or four days without a charge can't even have a dedicated assistant button, I might as well just switch to a fitness tracker that can get me two weeks of battery life.

Price wise, I grabbed my GW5 44mm for $140. Warranty is valid through 3/24 so I can safely assume its barely used. A GW5 Pro was around $180 and quite tempting for the battery life but not the overall size. Just too big for my wrists. Either way, I didn't have a problem with the price. This is kind of a trial run for me. The last Wear OS device I owned was the Ticwatch E. I was curious how Wear OS is doing now and if I'm missing anything. Unlike Garmin, its nice having the ability to fully respond to messages. Otherwise, I don't feel that I've gained much. The TW Pro 3 probably would have been fine for my purposes. Hopefully, Wear OS 4 can convince me otherwise. Maybe more useful apps will come out. I have only been using this for a couple days so I'm judging pretty quickly here. I really want to like Amazfit. They do everything right with battery life and Zepp OS just looks slick. After watching the Quantified Scientist, I'm pretty concerned about their health/fitness tracking. HRT on Amazfit is basically the worst out of all the watches/fitness trackers he tests. Ticwatch was middle of the pack (I believe). I'm not a serious athlete, but I am health conscious so I would prefer if those aspects are accurate. I did reprogram one button with a long press for Google Assistant on the GW5. I'm annoyed that I couldn't replace the button for Samsung Pay with Google Pay though.

@@ChristopherMarts don't know who to believe on the Amazfit tracking. Some reviewers say it's average, some say it's brilliant and some say it's bad. I don't need scientific level tracking, so I've switched to Amazfit from the Pixel Watch and boy, am I happy. No more dead battery, smooth OS, nice looking watches (for my taste at least) and manageable prices. Only naggles for me are that many watch faces cost extra and some of the features are a bit tricky to set up(hence I guess why many people just plain state they don't work). Hope they can streamline that a bit with this year's version of their higher end watches (which are rumoured to have magnetic charging and NFC on some models).

Very frustrated with how Google is handling this generation of the software. I really want the combination of the dual screen technology and a native Google Assistant button. And Google has seemingly deprived me of that by nerfing the Qualcomm chipsets of voice assistant functionality. I do not want to switch to Samsung or pixel watch and not have the dual screen. The old watch the ticwatch pro 3/ultra has a dedicated assistant button.... Honestly I'd rather keep using that on the dated version of wear OS. You can buy twp 3 for $150 brand new. 100 bucks on the resale market. Sad but if they're going to neglect Qualcomm watches Google might be turning me away from wear OS all together. I just switch to something cheaper with two week battery life like amazefit. I think you're absolutely right that Google and Samsung have been unsettling relationship as it comes to wear OS.... And it's a big disappointment because a lot of us were hoping that that partnership would improve the platform for everyone. The opposite seems to have happened

Yeah I actually am one of the few people that I'm happy ticwatch pro 3 appears to not be getting wear 3. Originally I very much wanted it but when I found out that anything with the 4100 chip would lose assistant functionality and access wear OS app ... It's not worth a headache for me. What's the benefit? Just a ridiculously stupid strategy from Google.... Basically forcing you to use the underpowered Samsung or Pixel watches with exynos chip and a battery life that probably needs to charge it every single night. What a bummer, we thought wear 3 might save the platform and it's actually turned me away from it.

From using ticwatches for a while, I'm not bothered by the magnetic charger. It's stayed the same since the 2020, so now I have a couple. I think the major difference, if I'm traveling, I'd be WAY more worried about charging a Fossil or a Pixel since they barely last a day. I've gone four days with a tic on a charge after minimizing workout tracking and using essential mode for down time. Since youre not always reaching for a charger, it's a little easier to plan ahead for when you might need to charge it.

@@SomeGadgetGuy Yep, the battery life definitely. I had a nice long run with the 1st gen TicWatch Pro which I used until late 2021! Then I moved to a Galaxy watch Active 2 and I was surprised by it's battery life. On regular mode with an always on display I still get 1.5 days, on Power saver mode - 3 days, and on essential mode about 4 weeks. Albeit Tizen OS, but has been working well with my Google Pixels ever since. I have moved exclusively to wireless charging for my phone, watch and earbuds. So while traveling I only have to carry around one Qi charging pad. :)

Does anyone know why Google's locking down Assistant by restricting access for non-Samsung third parties, including the now Google-owned Fitbit? Driving Pixel Watch and Samsung sales is the obvious answer, but it doesn't quite make sense to me. I moved from fitbit after my Versa 3 died and I found that the new gen nerfed by Google. I settled on a Garmin Venu 2 Plus over a Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro due to better battery life, a general dislike for Samsung's ecosystem, and because I use fitness and health stuff way more than smart features.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy Жыл бұрын
We'll never get a straight answer, but it LOOKS like Google picked Samsung to be "the winner". That way Samsung won't compete with Tizen, and they won't use Microsoft search on galaxy phones, and they can get into a cozy licensing agreement for components like cameras, screens, and SOCs. To get Samsung to switch from tizen to wear os, it seems the old wear os players had to be pushed aside.

I still have my original LG G Watch running AsteroidOS. No, not that one! The other one! Ehh.... Wrong again, the square one! That original WearOS 1 implementation was far simpler and could've worked for ages. FOR AGES. But it barely lasted the meagre 2 year lifecycle before the underlying service from Google made it literally unusable. When someone talks about quality from big G they obviously haven't been exposed to that crash fest 😆 Which brings us to the TicWatch... The inner nerd in me is mad that the capable hardware is locked to the same broken, disposable software ecosystem with new shiny shell (well, being locked out of the new shiny really). Couldn't Mobvoi start chipping with FOSS implementation of at least some functionality? Bah, hope dies last ... So, the basic PineTime it is for me 🙂

Love the hardware but being stiffed on the WearOS 3 update on the TW3 Pro Ultra I'm going to pass on Mobvoi products for now. They shouldn't have promised the WearOS 3 update and delay it. Their reasoning it's because of their proprietary dual system architecture which has nothing to do with Google. I don't agree with how Google is handling things, but it's Mobvoi's fault on this one.
@SomeGadgetGuy

And yet, whenever a watch has a Samsung SOC it gets better support and has Assistant. And when it has a Qualcomm SOC, it gets poorer support and no assistant. Gee... I wonder if Mobvoi is just lazy and evil... Hmmm...
@Zetsumei88
@Zetsumei88 Жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy I don't agree with how Google is handling things but Mobvoi shouldn't have promised something they couldn't deliver. Is it Google's fault for Mobvoi's lack of communication on the WearOS 3 update? Did Google make Mobvoi say they were going to give the TW3 Pro/Ultra WearOS 3 around summer of last year? Did Google make Mobvoi go radio silent when people were waiting patiently and asking for updates? Nothing prevented Mobvoi from communicating with their customer base about the difficulties they were facing with adapting WearOS 3 for their custom 4100 platform. They could have properly addressed the elephant in the room by giving their customers a proper explanation in a timely manner. Instead of saying, "Oh it's coming please be patient" Then a year later they give an actual reason while releasing their new flagship watch. Is Mobvoi the only company to have pulled stunts like this? Nope. But could they have handled matters differently to stand out from the rest of the pack? Absolutely. Hopefully they're more open with communication this time around if the same issue occurs with WearOS 4.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy Жыл бұрын
Sure. We're all frustrated about the communication. What's the root problem though? If Mobvoi is under developer NDAs, they probably had an idea of when they might have access, and after a point, how many times can they say "we're working on it". It's a complete unknown. We'll never get that inside info. We can still see the COMPLETELY different situations between Samsung hardware and Qualcomm hardware. I think there's a MORE important trend in support there other than "b-b-b-but Mobvoi PROMISED!"
@Zetsumei88
@Zetsumei88 Жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy The delay according to Mobvoi is they were having issues with their custom architecture for the 4100. I'm guessing it's possible they modified the coprocessor for the LCD since it's different than AOD. So it doesn't appear it's because Google cucked them this time around. While we way never know truly what happened. Seems in this circumstance the issue is in Mobvoi's court this time. Also radio silence is worse than "We're working on it".

I've always said this, Wear OS (Formerly known as Android Wear) is the worst OS for smartwatches. Samsung was right to go Tizen when they did. It always felt faster, and battery life was better compared to Wear OS smartwatches. And we see this with other smartwaches that ditch Wear OS. It's sad that Google has decided that each OEM will be responsible for the companion app as it creates confusion among consumers. Giving Samsung the edge when it comes to Wear OS updates furthers the notion that consumers have that "Android" smartwatches just aren't as good as an Apple Watch. Inadvertently, this also puts pressure on Samsung to deliver because they are seen as THE Android OEM even though they're not necessarily the best, and this is coming from someone who uses Samsung products. I think the hardware in this watch will probably go unmatched, especially at this price range. It's just sad that they have to settle for a compromised software strategy because of Google business practices.
