My Father is the late Stan Weiss, a recording engineer for Columbia Records in the 60's and 70's.and worked on one of the Moby Grape albums. I was a little boy of 11 years old when he came home from work and told my Mom that Skip Spence freaked out in a session at the studio on LSD and came after Jerry Miller with a fire ax. It took 7 people to hold him down before the EMS arrived. Skip was sent to Belleview Mental Hospital and stayed for 6 months. He was one of rock and roll's most talented musicians.

Moby Grape is a band that could have had the world. They were unique in several ways. Each member sang lead vocals, and they had 3 guitarists, which was a bit unusual. They were managed by a scoundrel named Matthew Katz who stole all of their money, and even the band name. They are still playing today, minus two members. Had that been managed and promoted properly, they would have been huge.
@chikkipop11 ай бұрын
At the time, they were the most exciting live band I'd ever seen. I still remember watching this show when it was originally aired.
@salanzaldi45519 ай бұрын
An old and far too common story in the rock business. The manager got all the money and the band members got zilch!
@salanzaldi45519 ай бұрын
This band was big when I was in my late teens. Despite hearing people talk about how good they were I didn't give them a listen. Back then I figured if I wasn't hearing them on the radio then they couldn't be that good. Little did I know how wrong I was.

Can a band have too much talent? Moby Grape was so amazingly talented that everytime I catch a video by them I'm blown away........
@mgdarenz2 жыл бұрын
The first record came out about 3 weeks after I was born. Looking back, I don't see anything special here. Recycled blues licks, a bit of folk and country influence, but nothing legendary, or remotely legendary. If you look at bands that were contemporaries, like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, they don't measure up anywhere close to those artists (and many more), so it must be something personal that resonated with some people.
@1blastman2 жыл бұрын
@@mgdarenz You were too young to see them live at their peak, but this was a great band. They were like "the world's greatest garage band". It seemed like the smaller the venue, the better they played.
@mgdarenz2 жыл бұрын
@@1blastman And I'm glad I was too young, because there is nothing special going on in their music. Now Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath are a different story. ;) I grew up in a great time period. 1967- to present day. Randy Rhoads, Eddie, Metallica, Fates Warning, Savatage, thrash metal, etc. ;)
@billfaulkner548 Жыл бұрын
They were good, but not as good as SF contemporaries like Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead or Big Brother & The Holding Company. Those bands had staying power. MG broke up before they showed what they might have been.
@donaldgehre59644 ай бұрын
@@billfaulkner548 I was there and into the scene quite seriously. The Avalon was my favorite venue from the Fall of '66 until Spring '68-too many people. I did see the Airplane, Dead, Messenger Service, Paul Butterfield, Youngbloods, Steve Miller, Chambers Bros.,Buffalo Springfield and many others too. They ALL had great musical energy and only varied by form and function. Moby Grape was exciting and put on a great show. In 1967 they were as good and as exciting as ANY of the bands. And considering that transformative musical universe was happening that is saying a whole bunch.
