I’ve tried different prototypes, this final version is the most reliable one for this model. No gear slipping, no stall. Of course it introduces more frictions but really not too much, and the XL Motor can handle it quite easily.

Couldn't you've just use a motor for the left wheels and one for the right wheels

Could you please post the link for the instructions, I would love to build it. WD-40 can and will reduce friction if you have trouble with it.
