This is a very raw and mostly unedited collection of footage I recorded on a weekend with Monty in 2010.
Ive mentioned before that Katie, my wife at the time, snuck Monty's number off my phone and secretly setup a trip for me to go visit him for a weekend. He was between projects and the studio was empty. It was unreal on so many levels. Basically showedup, and started working on things right away. Be started off with getting me suited up for motion capture to help him with something he was working on. He had me crash on the Achievement Hunter couch and left be there alone in an empty RT. It really felt like an out of body experience at the time. Next day we continued busting out some action shots. And then later (I do not have it recorded) he used the same workflow to recreate an animation I had been working on in Blender for many months. I wish I had more recorded of this, but I felt like such a weirdo pulling the cam out for what little I did get. Insecurities man. But it was awesome and I'll never forget what he did for me to kick start my venture into this stuff.
This is kinda long and awkward but hopefully you enjoy seeing him in his element.
Audio gets a bit wacky as I tried to remove background music and preserve his speak and other sounds.

this is crazy! a glimpse into the past, behind the curtain, to see not only the man who’s influenced my views of action, but also at the building that used to house some of my favorite online personalities. thanks for sharing.

So surreal seeing such candid footage of Monty here in 2024. But strangely beautiful just watching the two of you hang out and work together... Thank you for sharing this precious memory. Many years have come and gone, yet you both remain an inspiration to us all.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I've already watched it twice and it genuinely makes me smile and I'm greatful. So far I've absolutely wasted my life. I discovered Monty a couple years ago and seeing how dedicated he was to his work made me want to make a change in my life. I decided to pursue animation a few months ago but have had doubts as of late. You have no idea how much seeing this has motivated me to continue. You and Monty are my two biggest inspirations. Thank you again.

Actually really cool and cute to see y'all hanging out and working together like this. Still cant believe its been 9 years since Monty was taken from us. You two have been a huge inspo for me for a long time and was one of the main reasons why I became an animator in the first place. Crazy how time fly's.....

Thank you so much for sharing this. Monty meant so much to so many people, I had really hoped one day even if it had been as an intern to work with him when I was younger. I never stopped hoping, i've been working on 3D animation ever since but there is so much to learn and so few good ways to learn it. I hope you're doing well and hopefully we can all keep his memory and legacy alive

I’m just now seeing this, pretty late yeah I know. It’s 4 am rn, I’ve been going thru it for a few days (mental health stuff and recovering from a physical health scare) Originally thought “oh hell nah I can’t do this shit right now” but decided to stick with it and just enjoy this time capsule and celebrate your growth as an artist and Monty’s life and legacy. All this to say thanks for posting this video. You guys’ individual work and work together is the main reason I went hard and started learning animation in 2014(?), game dev, use mostly keyboard shortcuts, and the reason I still use Poser lol. Anyway, shouts out to you for being a real one and sharing this. Not everyone would have done that. Peace and love, and keep moving forward 🖤 🐦‍⬛

Thank you for sharing this with us, Shane! Very cool and interesting to see a small peak behind the curtain of both of your workflows back in the day. I've messed with some mocap data from the more recent suits before, can't imagine how much cleanup the suits in 2010 would've required.
@ShaneNewville
@ShaneNewville 5 ай бұрын
What sort of mocap have you messed around with? Ive used some of the newer ones too like from Perception Neuron (sensorless suits). I missed being able to use the ones with camera's and sensor. You do get more freedom without those, but its doesn't always do as well with detecting the ground plane in my experience. Really depends though. This stuff was always way to expensive for the average person, but tech is advancing fast and becoming much more accessible for anyone at much cheaper prices. (still too much!!). I have not tried any of the AI video-to-mocap type things.
@sylis_3d
@sylis_3d 5 ай бұрын
@@ShaneNewville I've mostly worked with Rokoko's mocap data. I'm not too familiar with the suits themselves but I do believe they're also sensorless since they lack a camera. Very jittery and/or stiff movements even after cleanup in my experience. Though as far as I know they are the cheapest mocap suits on the market as of current($2,000), but as you said, still too much! I also tried their AI video to mocap software but I don't recommend it unless you've got a good phone camera, (not gonna buy an iPhone just to try it).

lots of cleanup. the mocap itself was never really used 'as is'. it's more of a starting point, then lots and lots of editing to make it right. but having the vision ahead of time is key

Can you please explain montys approach to camera angles movement and editing you seem to use it in the same way but I can't get a grip on by just watching your works im trying to mimic this style of choreograph it looks inspired by old kung fu moives
@ShaneNewville
@ShaneNewville 5 ай бұрын
honestly, its hard to put into words and I wouldn't consider myself a master of it either. But yea, just trying to put to use a lot of what has been observed in the cool action scenes out there. Usually the camera type is Dolly cam so its not floating in every direction in 3d space. But often treat the camera as if its you being there watching the action. The camera is pretty much a character in the scene as well. But its not a rule and its not something to do for every single angle. Sometimes you cut in a closeup of an action to help the viewer take in what's happening. Sometimes a far away wide shot to establish the environment / geography if needed. Try not to break the 180 rule. (although Ive seen it rarely broken in movies before where it actually worked well) Kind of just depends. Editing matters too, like when to cut to another angle. I will often try to consider the rule of 3rds too, but i don't think im the greatest at that. Just keep taking in data on camera and editing when watching martial arts movies and anime, or game cut scenes. if a scene stands out to you, look at what exactly they did to convey the actions and flow. It wouldn't hurt to do some practice even with trying to implement what you see. Just keep at it and you will get better. I wish I could explain better. I feel like ive still got a long way to go myself.
