It's used in serious backgammon since about 1920 - it shows that one player has offered to raise the value of the game to 2x whatever points are scored in THAT GAME. The player who has accepted (rather than pass, giving opponent 1 point, and start next game) has the option, if he thinks the game has turned in his favour, to offer a redouble to 4 later in this game, before he rolls his dice. Check out - plenty of videos about this, e.g. Marc Olsen from Galaxy.

They simply have too much time. When was the last time you saw ANYBODY losing because of the expired time? It makes no sense. Of the initial 26 minutes, you had 23 minutes and 48 seconds left on your clock. That means that you needed only 2 minutes and 12 seconds of your "Real" time to play. 2 minutes for each game (18 minutes for a 9 games to win) and only 6 second of "Free" time.

@PeterOzanne

Correction: Mochy only had 5 minutes left - for him, that's a lot, often he only has 20 seconds! Nevzat is a fast player; well he IS Turkish 🙂. People sometimes lose on time, I've seen it happen. Here they had 2 mins per point time bank. Some tournaments now only have 1.30, and that is tight, especially if you have to do a lot of calculations and hard moves!

See answer above: In game 1, Mochy was in a position where he would win 68%, including about 40 gammons: he offered to double, Nevzat knew it was too risky so he passed, 1-0. Next game, the cube was accepted, so with a simple win it was worth 2 points - so 3-0 to Mochy. Using the cube is difficult - it needs much study to understand the percentages and match-score differences. Marc Olsen and others have good books on this, e.g. "Cube like a Boss".

Interestingly, in the recent UBC final against Dirk Schiemann Mochy didn't want the players to make PR plays which add extra decisions without impacting the result. I believe it was referred to as the "gentleman rule". However, here in this match when PR is irrelevant he does exactly that in the game when he is sure to lose a G but plays on to get the BG decision.
