Canad'a's legal system is based on Britain's to a large extent, as is yours. However, you chaps got a bit fed up with us Brits lording it over you and decided to do things your own way, although we've since kissed and made up. I think they wear gowns similar to their British counterparts out of tradition. British lawyers continue to wear these gowns too (a tradition dating from the 1660s) and also wear horsehair wigs.
