this is a great video! it summarizes the trepidation, skill, and thrill of surf ski paddling and very well. thanks for sharing!

That was one heck of a paddle. In the beginning the incoming sets didn't seem so big, but the action on the water was so crazy, that I can imagine how freakin huge it was. Props to You for displaying speed and BPM, made it so much more enjoyable :))

Also a nice demo of why all paddle craft should have bow and stern hand holds.

If you worried to crush your boat on rock then the same should go about your head… it’s good to use helmet mate

I built a slender sea kayak of just over 17 feet and 21 inches beam, it has a rudder which is a drop rudder from the stern of the yak. Can you ski fellas tell me why you choose to have your rudders fixed underneath the hull, where you have no say if you want it up and out of the way or not?

The rudder is in the optimal position for surfing runners (wind swell). A trailing rudder would be out of the water in many instances, causing the surfski to broach. We usually paddle in deep ocean, so the rudder is only vulnerable during launching and landing.

Thanks that was great. Different. Got a few chuckles out of the gags. How did you get the 3 dials up? Do you have to buy a special action cam or can you add it later to Gopro vision? Cheers.

Tony Brown, thanks for the comment. I used a Garmin VIRB camera which has onboard GPS and can connect to a Heart Rate Monitor. The dials can be selected using Garmin’s VIRB Edit software. You might be able to use the same software for GoPro footage. It can also pull in GPS info from an external device.

Can you eskimo roll these? Are your knees braced in?
@scubametalhippy Жыл бұрын
I think you’d need at the very least a lap belt
@pholloway2205 Жыл бұрын
No knee braces, no lap belts, just a strap for your feet to stop you from being washed off the back going through a big wave. If you fall off, you get back on and your body displaces most of the water. The scuppers take care of the rest once you’re at speed.

You don’t even know a surf ski from a kayak mate. Get ya craft right!

Rudder? what's the point? completely worthless when surfing a kayak. brace out into the wave next time and you might stay on your boat.

Riding an open ocean swell on a surfski is very different to catching a wave in a kayak. It’s impossible to do without a rudder 😊

I've paddled many a mile on the open ocean in my 17 ft decked kayak. surfed shore breaks and ocean seas I respectfully disagree in regard to rudders. I've never used a rudder. Somebody once told me only a limp wristed sissy would need a rudder. @@pholloway2205 😃

Clearly you don't do any open ocean surfing in a surf ski... What a noob comment 😂😂😂😂

Clearly,. I paddle a 17 foot decked kayak, It must somehow be different than a surf ski because I've never needed a rudder. Damn things are useless as far as I'm concerned. It helps to know how to use a paddle though. @@n.o1987
