It actually comes from Leonard Nimoy’s childhood memory of a religious ceremony at his grandfather’s synagogue. During the blessing, the man conducting the service would make this sign with his hands, which symbolises the Hebrew letter ש (Shin), standing for El Shaddai (God) and Shalom (peace, blessing).
