Alpha Bay took drugs off the streets in the same way Amazon took all the Mom and Pop stores. Now the city streets don't have small retailers anymore, only drug dealers that where once on the net. It's pretty easy for them to find it. It's not the same as with traditional internet or 'clearnet' where you are able to easily determine this kind of stuff with traffic monitoring/access statistics, on TOR and especially when it comes to dark net marketplaces (DNMs) the simple fact is that they ultimately need users/customers to remain in business and have a reason for existing in the first place...so all that any law enforcement agencies need to find them is to hang out on forums/social media sites that exist for discussing such places and they will quickly learn about new ones that pop up. It's why the places that are most successful at evading detection and remaining operational exist in a totally secretive manner where it's invite-only and you don't even hear about them unless you've been approved for membership by an existing user.

If you received your order and you were careful to ensure that you utilized PGP encryption when communicating with the vendor then there's not really anything to worry about. Most problems occur when people get packages sent from abroad and it gets seized at customs if they find the contents...even if this happens (at least in the US) if it's not a large amount which suggests obvious resale intentions they generally seize the contents and replace it with a "love letter" (notice of customs seizure). That'll definitely get you put into some kind of a database but not really an active watchlist, it'd be too much effort for them to investigate/monitor everyone in such a database.

@@dieselbaby what he said BUT ALSO - it IS possible; that the vendor saved ALL the address and customer information onto his computer, without ever wiping the data. Meaning if he got raided, your address is right there in PLAINTEXT for the Feds to read (possibly with a list of stuff you purchased) Either because he's an idiot/Lazy (probably not the case) or he intends on using that data as a bargaining chip if he gets caught, or as apart of some scam (Prob the case) This is a weak point in the concept of darknet marketplaces. And a situation similar to this (a vendor leaking his clients addresses & purchase history to the feds) Ross Ulbricht (founder of Silk Road) allegedly had someone murdered to prevent it. (It turned out to be a scam) But either way, you have literally nothing to worry about. unless you're buying $10,000+ every week of contraband, in which case youre opsec would have considered this outcome and it wouldn't have mattered.

I'm sure that there are people from Africa who use darknet markets by now in 2024, this is from 2019. I know for example there have been at least 1 vendor from South Africa on a popular darknet marketplace before. Most vendors don't want to ship to African countries though, for one thing, the postal system for receiving packages sent internationally to Africa tends to be generally unreliable (much worse in some countries than others) and it would be easy for a user to claim they never received their order and try to hold up funds in escrow.
