His lectures are almost like an opera/play.. the plot unravels almost like a dance.

In this lecture, he started from the partition function of ideal gas, and expressed the thermodynamic quantum using the derived partition function. He then discussed how does quantum effect come into play, when the degeneracy number is much less than 1

Wonderful! This is what a physics lecture should be like - lot's of insight that supplements the reading of the standard texts. Thank you, Prof. Balakrishnan.

Wouldn't the combinatorial factor for the case of two particles in the same state be N! 2! instead of (N-2)! 2! ? gvp
@bboyHarrypotter7 жыл бұрын
No, that's the standard binomial coefficient.
@rad8585 жыл бұрын
@@bboyHarrypotter The number of ways of arranging the letters in "piece" is 5!/2!. This is the same as the example at 42:19. The correct factor is N!/2!, not (N-2)!2!. The Prof was holding the identical particles in place, which would be the correct method if those two particles were distinguishable from the others, but we're talking about all the particles in the gas being indistinguishable, so it is not correct here. Everyone makes mistakes - this one is of no real consequence for the logic of the lectures so it's not a problem.
